When I installed antiX-17, I chose German as language because that’s what I am and this way I could use the keyboard as-is and didn’t need to imagine an English set-up instead of the German one. Meanwhile I regret that (partly) because a lot of messages are now in German and I have to translate them into English for communication and can never be sure that I got the wording right.

So the idea is: Switch the whole system to English. That by itself is probably easy, but of course it changes the keyboard setup, too, and I would like the keyboard setup to stay German.

      Is this possible?
If yes, what is the easiest way to do it?

      TIA for any ideas!

        sure.

        1. set locale to english (this command is for US english, but you can use “locale -a” to see a complete list)

        sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.utf8

        2. check to see if you keyboard is still german. if not,

        sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

should do what you want, or possibly use the keyboard configuration utility on the system tab in antiX control center.

          > update-locale LANG=en_US.utf8

I did that as root first and then with sudo, then did a “restart icewm”. Nothing changed, I still see “Ausführen” and “Persönlich” in the icewm-menu. Keyboard is still German. I can toggle the keyboard setup with fbxkb (visualized as a flag in the system bar / task bar(?)) but that also does not change the icewm menu.

Do I need to reboot for this to take effect?
If that should not be necessary… should I better reinstall antiX in English and then switch (only) the keyboard to German?
(I have an uptime of nearly 48 days now (Yay!) but if there is no reliable other way, I’d do it. Even the reinstall.)

To change the menu I think you need to copy the appropriate version from /usr/share/antiX?/….. for the root menu, then change the locale and run update menu.

              I see, thank you.
Hmm, if I have to do this for several things (root menu, antiX Control Center, whatever I don’t think of now), it’s probably more reliable to do a reinstall. I can move the content of /home to another partition, so I won’t loose personal stuff.

If you do do a re install in English, you can change the keyboard layout you use by running setxkbmap ?? where ?? is your Country code letters.
