      So quite a bit going on. Some of the issues may be fixed with an updated BIOS, if available that is.
      And Hopefully the suggestion from Robin will aid stability.

        Restarting xHCI didn’t work despite many tries.

        Thank you for that search. From it I found this Ask Ubuntu answer and decided to edit /etc/tlp.conf:

        RUNTIME_PM_ON_BAT=on

        The default was auto. I did this change after booting and while USB was already working. Now I’m waiting for if it dies or not.

          Actually, in addition that RUNTIME_PM SETTING I also changed on TLP configuration:
          PCIE_ASPM_ON_AC=off
          PCIE_ASPM_ON_BAT=off

          They were both “default” by default. USB has worked since. Uptime 20:37.

            intermittent errors are never easy to diagnose or fix..

              So it seemed to be a power management related problem. I think this can be marked [SOLVED] now.

                Thanks for the feedback – this thread can be useful to any user with the same problem!
                (Note to self and to everyone else: since it seems to be an extremely rare problem I won’t be adding any mention of this to the FAQ’s)
