Hi everyone! At work I have an old Dell Vostro 320 with a Pentium Dual Core E5400 CPU. In addition it’s running Windows 10 with just 2GB RAM. As you might imagine it’s rather sluggish.

Anyway I have a Samsung T7 500GB portable ssd and I looked for a lightweight linux distro and came upon AntiX. It works great! My questions are:

      1) Can I enable persistence so changes I make will be retained? and if so how?
      2) I get asked to print things off for staff at work so can I connect to a network printer while using AntiX in this manner please?

      Thanks for any help!

        Hi and welcome

1- Yes you can. configuring Persistence is not hard but it involves some steps – you can read forum entries about that or watch D.O.’s youtube videos, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGi9jd1qW8g

2- Yes you can – I think you need to have the CUPS service enabled when booting, there’s a boot code to achieve that when you are running antiX live, someone will tell you which one ( sorry it’s been a long time since I ran antiX live that way). Once CUPS is running you need to install the printer from antiX’s Control Centre and then you can print

Regarding persistence, see these articles as a beginning:

The videos are on dolphin_oracle’s youtube page. He’s got many. See what may be useful.
Also search the forum, as well.
There is a lot to the antiX live system. So read, watch, play/test.

Hi VanZan, like PPC already mentioned it is of course possible to print during live sessions.
For faster booting and less resources consumption some services are disabled by default during live.
So you have to start the cups service from terminal
            sudo service cups start
You can make the start of cups permanent, by deleting the l from your bootparams, later.

If you want to connect to a network printer, you might have to install libnss-mdns.
            sudo apt update
            sudo apt install libnss-mdns

            Welcome to the forum!
How did you create your live ssd?

Thanks for the replies…gonna take me a while to read through everything. In answer to the last question I just used Balena-Etcher AppImage on Manjaro (I use it on my thinkpads at home) to create the live ssd.

Sorry to say please here is some more to read
what to consider when creating a live usb
I never tried balena etcher, so I don’t know if it creates a fully functional read/write live usb with the ability for persistence.

Basically, you need to use the antiX/MX tool to use persistence.

This video may be helpful – it shows how to make a “fully-featured” antiX live-usb, when you only have one usb device.

Etcher works fine for making a persistent USB.

My two cents: Make a live USB, and fool around with it. Try setting up persistence. Once you get that working – takes me some time to get right – try writing your USB to your hard drive of choice. My antiX preferences have changed over time, and I learnt a lot just by fooling around with the live USB. Keep one around, it’s the best rescue disk and portable OS around. No one does persistence better with a live usb!

Just for completeness: Grab a reasonably modern android phone.

Download ISO and sha256 hash to phone storage
Use Hash Droid to check sha256 sum
Use app ISO to USB and OTG adapter to prepare a bootable stick

Apps are available from FDroid store. OTG Adapter costs a few cents.
Alternative is a double ended USB stick with one plug to fit the phone.
A good OTG adapter cable works too, cheap cable failed frequently on test

Above is now my go to standard advice for all users, works perfectly.

No luck at all. I tried Rufus but I couldn’t create a persistence file (might be because I didn’t create a persistence file in Rufus? Didn’t think I needed to).

I tried Balena Etcher but there was no F8 save option.

I tried booting into it as a live cd and using the built in usb maker but when I tried to boot the newly created drive I just got a black screen and “boot error”.

I tried using the AppImage live usb maker but when the process starts I get: “error encountered in the liveusb creation process”. This is on my Manjaro laptop.

                          Think I’m gonna concede defeat.

Make sure you use a good usb dvice.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Yeah I had to enable persistence in Rufus (apparently it’s necessary in newer versions of it) and things are working now.

“had to enable persistence in Rufus” sounds wrong. In rufus, i do nothing except select ISO file and click Start button. During live boot, that’s when to setup persistence. Yeah, really. Guaranteed, Rufus has no awareness of the various types of antiX persistence [[[root, home, all, dynamic, static]]]

You’re right. It’s not affected by enabling persistence in Rufus. All I know is when setting up persistence in live boot if I select option “1: Automatic” then it fails. If I select option “2: Custom” and select any file size it works. Don’t know why.
