I have antiX-14 installed on one of my Pentium-III boxes. I was using it yesterday and it seems fine. I am going to try to stay with version 14 instead of upgrading to version 16 or 17.
But what happens when I run a “dist-upgrade” on version 14 in this year 2018? Does it stay at version 14?

::I went ahead and did the dist-upgrade. Then I downloaded and installed the latest SMTube. I used Gdebi to install it and it passed a lot of messages to the terminal and took forever to finish. But eventually it finished. It seemed like it was going through another complete upgrade of the system. Anyway, when it was all done I tested it out. It all seems normal. I played a youtube clip using SMTube and mpv. I also listened to some internet radio using streamtuner and pmrp. I changed the theme of the Icewm and I logged out and in. It seems to have worked, whatever happened.
Do I still have antiX 14 or has this system now been updated to another version?

::Post the output of

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::Funny, I just sat down at that system to check the source files, thinking I needed to de-activate the testing repos. Well, it didn’t go well. I can’t get a terminal. ROXTerm will not start. I also tried launching mc from the menu. Then I tried to launch htop. No terminal apps will launch.
But I did get the Root Terminal to launch from the System Tools menu. I started mc from that and looked at the sources files in /etc/apt/. I noticed that all the repos were set to stretch and the notes mentioned antix-17.
I don’t have a USB port on the front of that machine so I had no easy way to transfer the output of inxi -r. But the results confirm that they are all set to stretch. Here’s the line for antix:
deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/stretch stretch main nosystemd
So I take it I now have some hybrid system between version 14 and 17?
And perhaps this is why I can’t get any terminal apps to launch from my user name? There must be some permission setting preventing me to launch the terminal but I don’t know how to fix it. GUI apps seems to work fine.

::Perhaps my attempt to install and upgrade antiX-14 on another machine also relates to this topic. I had the base install working fine and then I went ahead and did:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter reboot the keyboard and mouse were inactive. The login screen came up but I could not type my username or get any reaction from the keyboard or mouse.
I chose the default “testing” repo when I ran the installer. I figure that had something to do with it so I re-installed choosing “Jessie”/stable. I now have the system working again. I wonder what will happen when I try to do the dist-upgrade again?
Is it usually not recommended to do a dist-upgrade after a certain point? after the version is no longer current?

::” I can’t get any terminal apps to launch from my user name”
ok here’s a possible curveball. Menu entries carried over from version 14 probably try to launch roxterm. Did roxterm get removed and replaced by lxterminal by the dist-upgrade? So now when you click some of the menu entries it’s just not finding roxterm. Could edit your menu file and replace all mentiions of roxterm with lxterminal, or just reinstall roxterm if it got removed.

::I ran a AntiX 14 beta/rc ? < can't remember > for years as AntiX progressed through version releases and changes. It was my emachine 3507 in the motorcycle shop.
I eventually broke it and bit the bullet and installed a newer version.
Some of my threads and posts are in the below link I will provide. Kinda a shotgun approach I know. But I am busy with re-building my motorcycles.

::When I was setting up this old P-III I found out that I needed to compile a driver for the sound card. AntiX-14 had the necessary libraries and I was able to get it to work. I had tried antiX-16 and the video was messed up. on antiX-13 the video was fine but the sound wouldn’t work. So I landed on antiX-14 and it’s been working good. Now I wish I had not run the dist-upgrade. Oh well, I guess this is part of learning about Linux.
While the system does work, there are some anomalies after doing the dist-upgrade and installing SMTube. Here’s a few things I’ve noticed so far:
The repositories have changed to “stretch”, instead of the previous “Jessie”.
The ROX Terminal will not launch from several of the menu buttons. Other terminal based apps also will not launch from the menu. But I can launch the Root Terminal from the menu and I can launch ROX Term from SpaceFM and the SpaceFM desktop icon.
All of the setup files that are usually launched from the control center fail to load. “Edit Fluxbox Settings”, “Edit jwm Settings”, “Preferred Applications”, “User Desktop-Session”. All of these do not have any associated files for editing.
There appears to be some permissions issue and apparently the dist-upgrade made a few changes to the system and the control center and menus are now not properly linked.
USB automount is not working. The USB drives are recognized after a fresh boot but if all the drives are removed then no USB keys will be recognized when inserted. A reboot is required to get the USB drives back.
Should I re-install using the original version 14 disk? Or can I fix these things by editing some setup files?
Thanks,

It appears that ROX-Term is still installed. I can use it but it won’t always launch from one of the menu or panel selections. Is there a way I can fix the menus?

::I’d start with the basics.
which roxtermThen edit the menus in geany from the control center. I’d open the applications file also, using geany, in hidden folders .icewm or .fluxbox or .jwm also.
I’d make some backups in skel folder also. Use the locate command to find it. /etc/skel.
Make backups of everything in there naming them .old or .backup.
Then edit those/ not the old or backups also. Then not accept updates to /etc/skel after that. During dist-upgrade. Since I am on 14. AntiX 14 and earlier do not have systemd pin file. So it is easier to break /usr/local/bin when updating with Jessie repos.
harry@biker:~ $ cd /etc/apt harry@biker:/etc/apt $ ls apt.conf preferences.d trustdb.gpg trusted.gpg~ apt.conf.d sources.list.d trusted.gpg trusted.gpg.d harry@biker:/etc/apt $ cd preferences.d harry@biker:/etc/apt/preferences.d $ ls 00systemd harry@biker:/etc/apt/preferences.d $ cat 00systemd Package: *systemd* Pin: origin "" Pin-Priority: -1 harry@biker:/etc/apt/preferences.d $You might want to make one of those also.

$ apt search sakuraThanks rok, you’ve given me some clues to follow. I’m at work and the problem system is at home so I’ll work thru this on the weekend and let you know what I find.

::Just to update on this topic (old topic now):
I decided to re-install antiX-15 on this machine. At the time I was doing this I did not realize that antiX-14 was not a release version so I decided to skip trying to fix 14 and start over with 15. Thanks for everyone’s input.

::Thanks anti, Yes, I was thinking the same thing a few days ago. I haven’t got back to that machine yet so I think I will take your advice and do the install with 16.3. I hadn’t thought yet about the “generations” of the base Debian until doing some reading. I hadn’t been thinking of the system being Jessie, or Wheezy, etc. But now I get it – the latest Jessie is v16.3.
Next I’m curious if a Stretch version will work on that machine. I guess I’ll try it and find out. It worked on my Compaq P-III 1Gz. I think the lastest is antiX 17.3?
Thanks,
