      antiX-17.1 (Heather Heyer) released

This is primarily an upgrade of antiX-17 with a new Meltdown/Spectre patched kernel and a few new applications for users to enjoy.

As usual we offer the following completely systemd-free flavours for both 32 and 64 bit architecture.

antiX-full (c800MB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm plus full libreoffice suite.

antiX-base (c650MB so fits on a cd) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.

antiX-core (c320 MB) – no X, but should support most wireless.

antiX-net (c150MB)- no X. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build.

The 32 bit version uses a non-pae kernel.

      Read full announcement here: antix-17-1-released

Added: Current antiX-17 users do not need to download since upgrades will come through the repositories and to get the new applications, install repo-manager and live-usb-maker-gui-antix

Thank you for the development of the new version 17.1.

I am currently using antiX 17 (32 bit) and want to upgrade to 17.1 (32 bit). I have never done this before. Please provide me with the step by step process.

You note: “Current antiX-17 users do not need to download since upgrades will come through the repositories”

I tried sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade but this did not upgrade to 17.1

            Thanks for the help

We do not make any changes to the Distro information file since we decided for us to help users upgrading it is better if we know what they are upgrading from rather than to.

              1. Use synaptic, cli-aptiX or terminal to install the latest antiX kernel and headers (4.9.87 or if you prefer 4.15.9)
              2. Install the 2 packages I mentioned in the first post again via synaptic or terminal

                Now what?
Do I now need to use Synaptic to remove 4.10.5 kernel and headers. If so, do I use “Mark for Removal” or “Mark for Complete Removal”?

Is there any chance that this will crash my system?

Use it like that for a while, maybe for a couple of days (just to be certain that all the apps you use work ok) and then you can remove the older kernel and headers.
                      That inxi output seems fine.

Does it seem to be working ok for you?

It seems to be working fine.

                        I will now install repo-manager and live-usb-maker-gui-antix and also do apt-get dist-upgrade

Is there a way of setting it so that it will boot to 4.9.87 automatically or do I need to manually select it at boot up?

Have you got synaptic open or another instance of apt? If so, close them and start again

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

That was the problem–I had synaptic open.
Now, apt-get dist-upgrade works but there are no upgrades to be made at this time.

I’m I correct in assuming that the patches for Spectre and MeltDown are now installed with the kernel 4.9.87?

You have the latest kernel that has some fix for those exploits. However, 32 bit kernels have not been a priority (upstream) partly because of time constraints and probably also because Meltdown/Spectre does not infect the kernels as they do a 64 bit system.

You seem to be up to date, your antiX-17 version is upgraded to antiX-17.1 (at least 99% of it is) so time to relax and enjoy it.
