Hi all .. I burned AntiX 17 Live cd, booted and installed to HD, Couldn’t boot
after (missing os) I don’t think GRUB got installed. This is all quite lengthy,
      so please see attachment. Thanks!

Begin troubleshooting by ruling out Dell-U2417HJ as the problem.

        1) unplug monitor from wall power, wait 5 minutes, replug then attempt to boot.
(hopefully will restore the monitor to “factory defaults”; may have become jangled during a power surge, or sag)

        2) attempt to boot the Acer M3800 with a different monitor.

Next, with the PC unplugged… I would “clean the contacts” ~~ pull the RAM, the graphics card (if PC contains a discrete GPU) and clean the card edge contacts by scuffing with with a pencil eraser, then alcohol swap. Also examine/clean video cable connectors.

If no joy, next I would rule out BIOS quirkiness, by updating the M3800’s “BIOS: American Megatrends v: P01-A0 date: 03/19/2009”
        https://www.wimsbios.com/biosupdates/acer/ASPIREM3800
        latest revision is “P01-A2”

Also, try booting with the vga=839 cheat removed at grub boot menu.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

My advice is a lot simpler since your Acer Desktop has Intel Graphics from 2009. Which is supported By AntiX for years. If not a hardware break . I consider this operator error. I own a Acer Single core Pentium 4 D/A150? < Not sure of model number as I type this out >

I am posting your inxi output below

I only inserted what I thought relevent to my answer. File system corruption . That is serious.

If me. I would start over.
I’d do a md5sum check since you did not mention you have done this of your downloaded AntiX iso first.

I mentioned intel graphics support because I am posting from

So. Operator error or hardware broken. One of those 2. I am leaning more towards operator error. Especially when you say grub acted like it failed to install. But it did anyways. Last time womeone mentioned that in a thread I participated in. The Iso they dwonloaded was corrupt.

            Which is why I use

which saves my bacon when downloading anything from the net. My ISP is one of the worst on the forum. Good Luck.

Also. When you said you booted up your AntiX CD. I take it you meant a older version of AntiX? Since 17 does not fit on a cd till you move down to base or core versions of isos. I think your problem is a very simple fix. But requires some effort because you gotta start over.

I’ll try and cover as much as I can at the moment. I unplugged the DELL monitor and left it for awhile.

              No, I didn’t check the iso’s md5sum.

Size – I believe I wrote the iso to a DVD.

It wasn’t me just rebooting the machine that may have caused file corruption. When I would see the message about
“entering power saving mode” the screen would go black and machine would reboot.

              I have a 19″ Acer P186H and I’ll try that with the AntiX-17. (Later)

I tried to get the bios file, but the download doesn’t start when I click to download from Acer.

Not sure if I mentioned this? I swapped out the machine’s CPU. I wanted
to use virtualisation, but the M3800’s processor didn’t have support for that.
I replaced it with this E6600. Details below.

Ok. Just going by what I read.

I installed AntiX 17 after burning the iso to cd and booting

I rebooted the with the Live cd and reinstalled a second time

                No, I didn’t check the iso’s md5sum.

Being a team member and hardware tester in the past. I never took my downloads for granted . It saved a lot of trouble shooting steps later on when testing alpha and beta versions of AntiX. Sounds to me like you downloaded iso is corrupted so far.

                  Hi all,

I couldn’t get to my acer monitor, so I used my NEC MultiSync 70GX (2.

It looks like skidoo was right and the problem seems to be a hardware related.
I pulled two old Parallel port cards (pci) and I checked all cables. The system
has built-in graphics. I checked all connections. I pulled the fan and heatsink.
I vacuumed out the box and cleaned up everything. Cleaned and added new paste and
re-seated the cpu. After that I pulled the ram (4Gb – 2×2) and cleaned the contacts
and plugged it back in. I looked over the motherboard and didn’t see any swelled
capacitors. I unplugged every connection I could find and plugged them back in.

The thing is still rebooting on its own. The installation difficulties was due to
                  rebooting / hardware issues.

I just downloaded the newer bios file and will try and make a bootable something and see
if I can add the bios file.

                    Hi all,

The thing is still rebooting on its own. The installation difficulties was due to
                    rebooting / hardware issues.

I just downloaded the newer bios file and will try and make a bootable something and see
if I can add the bios file.

                    ======================
                    BIOS: Date: 2010/03/02
                    Version: P01.A2
                    Vendor: Acer
                    Size: 2.5 MB

UPDATE: The Acer M3800 Box …

I flashed the bios and on reboot the fan was louder and turning at 3900/4000 rpm.
The thing didn’t reboot again until almost 42 hours later. I restarted it after
the first shutdown and it was 26 hours before it shutdown again. No over heating
according to the temps in system settings.

I had reinstalled AntiX-17 (checked md5) and knew the problems had nothing to do with it.

I only paid around $120.00 for the old box, so I’m not sure what I am going to do with it at
this point. I mean the problem could be one of so many different things. Power supply, cpu,
                    motherboard and so on.

                    Thanks for the help guys!
