I would like to enable compton or xcompmgr to give the toolbar alpha compositing. I installed compton from Synaptic pkg, yet does nothing when I click the icon. Tried xcompmgr also from Synaptic pkg and could not get the icon in applications. At one point, there was a GUI for “special effect settings” (nothing that worked) – however no longer exists after installing and reinstalling completely removing and reinstalling.
Tried auto-hide, but it responds too slowly.
Any suggestions for a compositor no matter which one it is, that could be enabled to make toolbar/taskbar in icewm alpha, would be appreciated.
Thank you.

::I don’t think it is possible to have a transparent toolbar/taskbar in IceWM.
If you want compton, add this line just below the #bin/bash line in the startup file in Control Centre -> Session -> User Desktop Session
compton -i .80 --active-opacity .8 &This means compton is available for all windows managers.
If you want it only for IceWM, then add the same line only to the IceWM startup file
Control Centre -> Desktop -> Edit IceWM Settings

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::Thanks! I tried this and it froze the system – all transparent everything – menus, taskbars, internet, etc. and almost nothing functioned except for logging out. I had done a snapshot just before, expecting it might do something strange.
I appreciate your help. Now I know for my particular setup, to try a different solution. I have installed Xfce desktop and will see if I can use it there.
Thank you again.- This reply was modified 5 years, 3 months ago by rej.

::The command above is variable. Here are some parameters.
-b start in the background
-c Create window shadows
-C no transparency for docks or panels
-ox Opacity of a shadow (x = 0.0 – 1.0, default: 0.75)
-O x Hiding opacity increment (0.01 – 1.0, default: 0.03)
-mx Transparency of a menu
-ix Transparency of an inactive window (0.1 – 1.0)
-I x Increase opacity increment (0.01 – 1.0, default: 0.028)
-ex Transparency of the window decoration (0.1 – 1.0)
-f Show / hide when enabling / disabling windows
-lx (small L) Left offset for shadows (in pixels, default: -15)
-tx Upper Offset for Shadow (in pixels, default: -15)
-rx Shadow blur radius (in pixels, default: 12)
-Dx The number x stands for the step size (in milliseconds) when fading in / out
-G No shadow display when drag’n’drop of windows0.0 is the most transparency
It could also look like this eccompton -c -o 0.8 -m 0.8 -e 0.75 -f -b &
You have to look a little bit into compton and play with the options, it’s not like installing and works.
You can also look at “man compton” or “compton -h”
Anyway I dont know if its a good idea to do this on antix.
For to hide the taskbar in icewm, did you try the collapse-button in preferences?
Good luck !- This reply was modified 5 years, 3 months ago by caprea.

::Thank you caprea – Had tried “Collapse button”, but found that it did not work out for me. I switched desktops from antiX icewm to Xfce, but still have antiX icewm on 2 other computers and will see what I can do with compton there. Looks like I just selected the wrong option for panel and this is very good informtion from you. I appreciate it!
Note – The only transparency I would like is for panels – is that not possible with these above commands?

You might find it beneficial to become better acquainted with the information that antiX provides both online and locally installed.
Have you looked at the help files for IceWM that ship with antiX-Full?
Main Menu→Help→IceWM
The manual provides guidance on adjusting the timing delay applied when hiding the taskbar.February 1, 2018 at 9:32 am #6043Memberrej
::Yes, both are very helpful along with a forum search, online search, rifling through files, youtube and then lastly, a post in the forum.
Finally located where the “focus and behavior” settings were – never noticed the line in Geany-preferences to go to “/user/share/icewm/preferences before. Changed timing setting to “0” in terminal.
Being fairly new at the Linux system and terminolgy, (Mepis glossary helpful…), I’m somewhat clumsy at uncovering or understanding many of the options.
Still trying to find a configuration that will remove the titlebars from the taskbar buttons – in icewm preferences file. Maybe searching for the wrong description to find it, or it is a global setting or it is right there and overlooking it.
Thank you for your direction – going back over it and knowing it was there, helped me find it!
