I have been experiencing mysterious issues on a T61p Thinkpad x64 with x64 antiX I.S.O. installed.

My former recent posts regarding not seeing desktop login, Mate missing suspend option, gvfs-backends and many many issues not posted regarding other file managers and application settings disappearing, wallpaper turning to a black background, a lot of broken packages in synaptic…and on and on, appear to be stemming from Synaptic installing 32 bit files (i386 – unlike the same files on the newer T420s) onto a 64 bit PC. If gvfs is re-installed, it comes back as “broken” and will not install and cannot be fixed.

I have 3 ThinkPads that are from that T-series beginning of 64 bit machines and have always loaded Snapshots fully configured from T420s and a T520 that ran perfectly. Never had to install anything, just use it. Ran well. Until now.

Did a completely clean antiX x64 install, put Xfce on and the same erratic results.

These PCs have large hard drives so I thought I would experiment with adding more desktops (only 1 other per partition) and that is when the various complications began to show up.

Had just viewed the new D.O. video regarding Rox Filer and decided to give Rox another try and found it running very inconsistently. Tried installing other file managers which installed corrupted or when I used the package installer, not at all, with no dialogue.

Is there a fix for this? Installing 32 bit I.S.O.s on them instead of 64? Or just need to install what I need on a newer ThinkPad, install it on the older ones and plan on using it that way without changing anything? Would automatic updates apply properly?

Any insight into this would be much appreciated.

      Thank you.

Are you running only using default stretch repos?
Are you installing any apps that are 32 bit only?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

          Hi –

          Thanks for your help.

Yes – default – Debian Stable
No – 32 bit apps that I know of installed – only Chrome, xscreensaver, GIMP, Redshift (w/Geoclue2), Pinta and Florence.

All the above added apps are from Synaptic Pkg Mngr or Package Installer only.

I have been comparing behavior and files on several different PCs [w/ same AntiX/MX setup, apps, config] to try to gather more information regarding the broken packages.

On the T61p, I found that IceWM is left alone with no other desktops installed, it runs fine. I again, installed IceWM on another partition – fresh, fully configured, up to date – new kernel 4.15.9 and did a backup image, added Xfce after, and when Xfce would not run properly, installed the backup file and it was just a list of i386 failed directories errors going by. The computer would no longer boot. Grub was installed on my MX17 partition. Tried to repair Grub from a USB snap and it had a failed notification dialogue. But after a few reboots, got Grub back. The partition was totally corrupted that AntiX was on. Maybe Timeshift no longer works after installing another desktop?

The findings on all other devices were that once Xfce is installed, when switched back to IceWM, many applications no longer function properly such as USB devices and wallpaper [black screen]. Perhaps Thunar’s mere presence interferes even though it is in Xfce.

Yesterday, on any of the PCs tested, (completely updated, upgraded, and with 4.15.9 kernel) Mate desktop would not install, through the package Installer or Synaptic.

The broken packages, except for the Mate installation failures and IceWM “switch desktop” issues, appear to be isolated to one device – the Thinkpad T61p.

I have never used it. Have you used the iso-snapshot utility and get the same result?

Maybe it is a hardware issue. That T61 may have a disk that is dying.

Snapshots from a full setup on another device work well and an installation fresh with default IceWM works fine as long as there are no other desktops added. MX works perfectly also. I think the disk is good – tested it and it is fairly new. However, you are more than likely correct – some other issue with hardware.

Thanks again for having taken the time to look into this. I appreciate it.
