Thunar is missing many of the options it usually has – such as “eject”. It will not automatically mount USB. Many of the actions, such as “disconnect” get a failed box with “permission denied” or “operation not permitted”. Running into this with modifying files and other simple actions. All options are set to mount automatically. All configure files that I could find are set to auto-mount. Had to install tumbler to get thumbnails to show. Won’t allow saving files sometimes (only using what is allowed to put in file names) – try again with a different name and it renames.

Rox filer also will not mount/unmount – eject -“fail – too many arguments”, many denied actions.

Space FM mounts usb automatically, which show in thunar and rox filer immediately after. Cannot eject from SpaceFM. Must unmount only. Can only mount and unmount in mountbox. Awkward to do this, but still no eject options.

I installed Xfce for thunar and compositing. Compositing works very well, but I would like thunar to function properly if possible. I do a lot of file moving and copying with usb sticks and external hard drives. I investigated the possibility of installing thunar in IceWM, but only came up with the option for xfce.

Currently using all 3 filers, yet the files have to be checked, as many are corrupted and cannot open. Also the filers often crash and shut down while moving files.

In my efforts to resolve this, checked AntiX Manual-XFCE section, searched mx forum, did many google searches online, geany, compared auto-mount and other directory files, and settings with MX17 Xfce, uninstalled thunar, rox-filer, SpaceFM completely and reinstalled, looked at xfce-the-missing-manual, and searched videos.

      Any ideas to fix this?

      I will appreciate any input.

      Thank you.

thunar requires gvfs and gvfs-backends for much of its options to work.

as to unmount vs. eject, I suspect you get an eject option for DVD/CDROMS but not for usb devices. which is ok, once the devices are unmounted, its safe to disconnect the device.

Finally someone post thread about this! In addition, as tested in virtualbox, I can’t change the wallpaper because selecting wallpaper in the xfce’s file picker is not possible. Help! Turns out xfce in antix is a bad idea

I wouldn’t say that Xfce on top of antiX is a bad idea, but it needs a LOT of work and knowledge. MX Linux shows it can be done since it is Xfce on top of antiX-core.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

not to mention the fact that Xfce has a few…quirks…when it comes to file picking in the Desktop Settings app. Generally, you need to point the thing at the correct folder, which is generally only possible if you change the folder its looking at to by selecting “Other ” in the folder picker area of the desktop settings app. Then you can navigate to where you need to be.

You got it! gvfs was already present as being installed, but that may have gotten in there with what I installed that I saw in MX17 – just went down the list and loaded what was connected with thunar and not there by default, since MX works flawlessly.

gvfs-backends held back 119 packages that failed and just loaded one. That must have been the one that changed it! Now eject, and auto-mount work perfectly.

Haven’t tried DVD/CDROMS yet, but I suspect it will work.

Looks like all 3 file managers are functioning properly now.

There are little quirks with switching from icewm to xfce, but overall – it runs very nicely. I am just not knowledgable enough sometimes with what to search for in the system when something does come up. In most cases, it can be found with the help provided.

In itself, it has many advantages that seem to be a combination of the 2 desktops.

I remember having a little trouble with it changing wallpaper through the desktop setting, but in thunar you can just right click on a photo that you have saved and select “set as wallpaper”. I don’t recall what I had changed in the (right click dropdown) desktop settings to make it work, but eventually it did. It might have been using one through thunar that jump-started it. That desktop setting works perfectly now.

                Thank you so much!
