Hello forum. This is my first posting here so please excuse (and educate) me if I “transgress the unwritten laws” of the forum.
I am trying to build a command line based system using antiX-19.2_386-core. To this end I have been trying to install antiX-19.2_386-core as a V.M. in Oracle virtualbox, Version 6.1.10 r138449 (Qt5.11.3). I am using MX19.2 (conscientiously updated) as the host machine. The live load process stops/hangs after displaying “live-restore-services: restoring service links”. The quotation marks are mine. A screenshot of the offending item is attached, possibly I am a forum novice.
To try and resolve this issue I have tried the following:-
Confirmed all the md5sum’s are correct for all downloaded ISO’s.
used the 32 bit version from a Spanish and British mirror.
used the 64 bit core iso (from two mirrors).
Used the 32 and 64 bit core iso’s from SourceforgeAll to no avail. The ISOs all boot from a usb drive and I currently have antiX-19.2_x64-full installed and working in Oracle V.B. on the same host machine.
So…………..am I being stupid and missing anything obvious?
Thanks in advance of any constructive responses.

::Just today I am using core on VB to see how Mate works, how heavy it is etc.
Core works, you just need to change the boot parameters. You have 2 options:
– Use failsafe Option
– Edit boot parameters and delete the “splash” optionYou just need to be patient and test things out. It wasn’t difficult for me to figure this out after the third boot.

::Hi Xsecure,
Thank you for your prompt response.
I will try your suggestions and let you know of the outcome.
Thanks again .June 19, 2020 at 6:28 am #37699Moderator

::Yes, I occasionally run into this too.
In the past most of my systems and distributions would start “normally”, but as my system has aged and the OS kernel supports newest systems first, a few other features don’t always initiate automatically anymore, so sometimes I have to boot by adding a few options. I’ve never had antiX or MX Linux fail if I use a failsafe mode to boot.- This reply was modified 2 years, 10 months ago by Brian Masinick.

::Alternatively if I am able to enter the specific graphical setup resolution and characteristics that generally works out for the most part.
When even that fails the failsafe mode has worked every time.

::Thanks to both Brian and Xecure for guiding me to an easy fix. I booted using the “Failsafe Boot” option and it is now “all systems go”! I have never experienced any boot problems using V.B. and Core Edition, or any other edition of any other Linux ‘Distro’ so using other boot options did not occur to me. My system is a crusty old (similar to me) Acer dual core AMD Athlon II soImay run intomore of these conundrums, I have been warned.
Don’t be surprised if I am back on the forum looking for help/guidance with my attempts to use as exclusively as possible a CLI environment. I will keep my Dell Mini 9 alive, even if the “equivalent” batteries only last a year or so. B-(
Thanks again.

::How about a few suggestions for your “command line” learning:
1. Use Search Engines: I went to https://duckduckgo.com/?q=linux+commands&t=hk&ia=cheatsheet and found this.
2. After using the search, I found: https://www.howtogeek.com/412055/37-important-linux-commands-you-should-know/
3. I haven’t had to use this in a while, but it’s been a good resource for me over the years and it is still there: https://www.tldp.org
4. The “Dummies” series has good information on a lot of topics. You can purchase books, but there are a few things free online. Take
a look at https://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/linux/common-linux-commands/
5. https://www.tecmint.com/linux-commands-cheat-sheet/
6. https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/linux-commands/
7. http://www.unixguide.net/linux/linuxshortcuts.shtmlYou can probably find whatever you need online. If that works for you, great. If not, go over to a bookstore, such as a Barnes & Noble; they still have plenty of technology books and you can find stuff about programming, Linux, etc. in a bookstore. This ought to help you get going. See how far it takes you.
Best wishes!

::Brian, Thank you for the above links.
I have already installed cmus, mocp, nnn and of course htop. I was considering using tmux or a similat terminal multiplexer as a way of moving from one terminal app. to another. Web browser terminal app’s appear to be a challenge and have tried VI on several ocassions over the decades and for me I think “that way lays madness”.
Forum newby question, how do I mark my query as solved/closed, or is this not required on this forum?
Thanks.June 20, 2020 at 11:36 am #37759ModeratorBobC
::If you hate VI keys, e3ne is built in. mc is built in (including mcedit). tilde is a very good multifile cli editor, but you need to install it.
Sorry, I don’t like any of the terminal based browsers.

::Geany is a useful easy to use editor.
Nedit, also known to those who love it as “Nirvana”, is also an easy to use editor but I am not sure you want to install it. I’m not sure if it pulls in a lot of library packages or not. Geany is generally installed on most antiX builds except for the really minimal ones.
The editor that comes with Midnight Commander, mcedit, works too.
Hope that helps.

::I think he is using a core based terminal environment, without X-Windows.
That does reduce the number of easy to use editors that are available.
I’ll take a look. Joe (or “cousin jupp” is one good editor that can be used with various key bindings.
Easier yet and very lightweight and simple is nano.
Let me know if those are suitable. Of course vi/vim and emacs are classic editors that are very powerful and work on the command line or from a GUI.

::Hi Brian, BobC is correct I am running this VM without X-windows so my choices are limited to command line editors. I have avoided using M.C. as I have never got on with dual pane (pain!) W.M.s. However I have read/”Googled” that, as you say, the editor that comes with M.C. is quite good. Mind you, DistroTube is extolling the virtues of Micro terminal editor, seems that I may spend far more time playing with my idea of a terminal environment than my wife will allow!!
