I have a new Dell Vostro 5581 which hangs when booting antiX 19.2 from USB. The same USB boots fine on an older Lenovo laptop. The Dell has no problem booting Ubuntu from USB.

The boot process gets as far as Starting X and then nothing happens.

Reading /var/log/Xorg.0.log I see the following errors:

      VESA(0): V_BIOS address 0x790 out of range
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

      no screens found(EE)

Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.

This is after having tried to startx from the shell manually.

What can I do to find out what went wrong and/or fix it?

It is the same end result regardless of which option I select from the boot menu. I also find it inordinately hard to switch virtual terminals.

        I tried https://askubuntu.com/questions/203776/x-fail-screens-found-but-none-have-a-usable-configuration

        Xorg -configure

        which resulted in:

intel: waited 2020 ms for i915.ko driver to load
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed.

Probably kernel related. You may need to update the kernel for the live system to at least. 4.19.xxx
For that you will need to remaster the live system on your other lenovo computer
There are a few post about how to do this in the forum.

If it is kernel related, or you just want to test, you could download this iso. It uses a 4.19 kernel.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Ah. Too bad. Guess I’ll be running Ubuntu on the Dell then.

For reference, lspci | grep VGA produces
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (Whiskey Lake)

EDIT: I’ll try the Testing version with 4.19 kernel.

                Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Will there be a regular release with the 4.19 kernel?

                  When I get time.

Thanks for testing and giving us feedback.
