I tried it with several different kernels. Every time it sets the dpi to a very low number. You can not read the font in the menu or anything on the panel. If you try to change the dpi to a higher number. It almost fixes things. But it won’t do it permanently. As soon as you reboot, your right back to a desktop you can’t read.

Most recently the steps I took:
      1) I upgraded the kernel to 4.9.221
      2) rebooted
      3) Used Control Centre to install nvidia driver
      4) rebooted and found the issue.

Not an expert but I wonder, which packages did your step 3) install?
        Could you please post also?
        dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
(There is also an Xorg package for Nvidia.)
        Judging from
this DEB package, it seems to me that you need some *nvidia-legacy* package(s).

Anyway, I have faced a potentially similar issue with resolution being detected improperly (antiX 19, 64-bit, testing).
As a temporary workaround, I have created a script to call ‘xrandr’ and added a corresponding call to startup file ‘~/.desktop-session/startup’.
Somehow, the issue was fixed later on without me needing to take care of it.

Might help. Might not. I usually roll with the open source nouveu driver myself lately.
Since updating certain things requires a proprietary driver re-install.

          lsmod | grep nvidia

          lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D"

For good documentation. I usually look at
