::Hi,
Thank you, as always, for your help.
Per my post up above, using acpi=off worked and I was able to boot up with port replicator attached. Then installed antiX.
What I could use help with, as per post above, is getting WiFi UP and working.
Thanks!

::Just to rule it out,
the wifi is turned off per default in connman (under status tab), did you turn it on ?December 2, 2020 at 10:41 pm #46384Member

::Thanks for your help, caprea.
Forgot to mention in prior post that when I looked in connman, I did not see wifi listed, just the wired connection. So, could not turn it on.
I clicked on ‘rescan’ button, but nothing changed.

::If possible, share with us
inxi -Nxxx
So we can see all devices recognized by the system and the kernel driver used.If you see it is using a rtlxxx or similar driver, try using the antix-wifi-switch (Menu > Applications > antiX > antix wifi switch) and select Ceni. If ceni doesn’t recognize the wifi either, we will have to follow some troubleshooting steps, starting with
dmesg | grep -i "rtl8x"Edit: I suspect a kernel update may be needed for this device.
Edit 2: See below. It seems there is some trouble with this device on linux.

::$ dmesg | grep wifi
[ 38.984113] usb 2-1: rtl8xxxu: Loading firmware rtlwifi/rtl8192eu_nic.binIt seems that the default driver rtl8xxxu doesn’t work that well with the USB based rtl8192eu wifi chip.

It seems that you either need to download the packages separately and move them to a USB drive or use a different USB wifi adapter.Sorry for the previous assumptions. It doesn’t seem easy.

::Hi Xecure,
Thanks for your help…..
Have several issues to resolve:
A. WiFi
Meanwhile, I noticed your helpful post about WiFi and watched part of your video.
So, think I right-clicked on network icon, then saw that only Ethernet had box checked. Checked the WiFi box and Voila! Connman showed wireless networks!
Now issue I have is that at work (where I am now…), I have to use the guest network for my personal laptops. It uses captive portal, so, have to get browser to open the page where you click on the button to agree to terms and conditions of using the network.
I was able to connect to the network and it shows info about the guest network in Connman.
However, I tried Dillo and elinks, but they won’t open to that login page, even though I see the URL for that page in the URL address field.
I will try again later, as sometimes the network does not have internet service active, even though I can connect to the network.
I have not been able to open Firefox, nothing happens when I click on it.
B. Terminal
When I click on Terminal or RoxTerm, nothing happens.
When I click on Rxvt (says urxvt at top of window), it does open it.
Why don’t certain programs open?
C. Toolbar
Is it possible to ‘auto-hide’ the toolbar at bottom of display?
I need more vertical viewing area most of the time.
D. Audio
Don’t think audio is working….
I opened antiX Control Centre and clicked ‘Sound Card Chooser’.
It says:
Sound Card: A5451: ALI5451-ALI5451
Nothing to do
Clicked on ‘Test Sound’ but don’t hear anything.
Clicked on ‘Adjust Mixer’, but nothing happens.
Clicked on ‘Alsamixer Equalizer’, but nothing happens.
Apprecate any input on the various issues.

::Well done solving the wifi problem. I searched for your device on the MX forum and thought it may be problematic on antiX too. Good thing yours works. One less problem.
I was able to connect to the network and it shows info about the guest network in Connman.
However, I tried Dillo and elinks, but they won’t open to that login page, even though I see the URL for that page in the URL address field.

I have not been able to open Firefox, nothing happens when I click on it.If I understand something from the translation of this website:
http://caspro98085.blog50.fc2.com/blog-entry-343.html
You need a non-sse2 supported browser.When you do get to connect to a different non-restricted network, try installing palemoon non SSE2 version.
Launch the package installer and search for “sse”. The first result is palemoon non-see2 version. Install and try to see if it loads websites OKish.B. Terminal
When I click on Terminal or RoxTerm, nothing happens.If you can launch it from urxvt, running:
roxterm
then we know that it works but the menu entry may be broken. Next time you install an app it should fix itself. If it doesn’t we will explore this problem later.
If it doesn’t load at all, maybe reinstalling it may fix it. Alternatively you can go to Control Centre > Desktop > Preferred Application and change the terminal program to rxvt-unicode.desktop so the Terminal entry in the menu launches this terminal emulator instead of roxterm.C. Toolbar
Is it possible to ‘auto-hide’ the toolbar at bottom of display?
I know Moddit has autohide configured for the icewm taskbar, so it is possible.
COntrol Centre > Desktop > Edit Icewm Config files > preferences tab, search for “TaskBarAutoHide” and set it to:
TaskBarAutoHide=1
and save the file.
Then in the Menu > Logout (arrow) > Restart Icewm should make the the taskbar autohide.D. Audio
Don’t think audio is working….
Audio is one of the most complicated problems to solve. We can look into it when the others are solved.
When you get a connection to the net, install palemoon and run this in the terminal:
inxi -Fxz
Copy the content and paste it with code tags in a new reply so we can figure out the audio problems.I think I haven’t forgotten anything.

::Thanks, Xecure!
When I get home this evening, I will try to connect to my network there and do as you suggest.
Meanwhile, I got auto-hide toolbar working!
Tried opening roxterm from urxvt, but got error messages;
$ roxterm Illegal instruction $ ./roxterm bash: ./roxterm: No such file or directorySame thing happens if I try to open firefox in urxvt….

I have a fear I hope isn’t real.
If you load the DVD/USB and select from the F4 menu:
checkmd5
or add this boot parameter:
checkfsDo the tests pass? If the download was defective, one of both tests won’t pass, and that can lead to some programs failing. Hopefully nothing else important got corrupted. Best case scenario is reinstalling some programs. Worse case scenario is re-downloading the ISO and reinstalling the whole operating system. Let us hope only some programs got corrupted and the rest works.

::Do not want to provoke any bad things here, but the illegal instruction message could be an indication that the processor does not meet certain requirements, for some programs that are compiled with optimizations specific to certain processors.Hopefully it’s the md5sum.

I did check the file, before installing….either md5 or sha256….can’t remember…but it matched….

::Now, a small window popped up on screen…..
No pinboard was in use.... the 'Default' pinboard has been selected. Use 'rox -p=Default' to turn it on in future.I assume the message means I should add ‘rox -p=Default’ to the startup options, correct??
If you get to install it, you need to edit the desktop-session.conf file and increase the Startup delay time (to 4 or 5 seconds). This will solve the roxfiler error message.
Out of topic,
Newbie to AntiX (ICEwm) … desktop-session.conf, found in /home/user/.desktop-session … Gracias Xecure.

::Next time you get undefined video mode. Go make some tea or something.
I used to get that message during testing distro. I would walk away and my 1024 x 600 display would finish boot process and and my desktop would come up.
I tried video modes like you did when you got that message. It did not work for me either.
Along with inxi report asked for.
rfkill listAs far as firefox not loading. Google old gear running modern browsers. If firefox does open . It will run like it is under water. Slow and with problems.

::Thank you for your input, rokytnji.
Understand issue with trying to run firefox on old hardware.
Per Xecure’s suggestion up above, I plan to try Pale Moon browser later today and see if it works….
For everyone’s info, so that you know, I am trying this on my old Vaio as more of a challenge and fun exercise than anything else. I have some newer, higher performance laptops that I use for more serious work.
Thought it would be fun to see how far I can get with using such old hardware.
🙂
