It’s also redundant — NW status on the task bar and on the desktop makes no sense.

So, nix it… and “to hell with” all the JWM and fluxbox users ?!?

        Howdy!

NoClue is right about the new default “Lines” wallpaper not matching the rest of antiX default color scheme…

Note: I boot antiX19b2 live from a iso, from my hard drive, so I have no F”x” boot menu to test anticapitalista’s tip about booting in “dark mode”…

Big changes on the default looks of a distro are always hard, “hard” for the dev’s because their distro is a labor of their love, and they love the end result of their work…
“hard” for the end user that many times is used to the way things looked, sometimes over a period of years… But hey, anti, and the rest of the team: you already changed many things, the icons, the default wallpapers… I don’t think you should fear change the default themes, not if the change is for the “better” (or at least according what now is considered “trendy”)

Some ideas ideas to make antiX look even better out of the box (no additions, just changing some defaults):
-So, if I may be so bold I propose this “default” looks:
-For IceWM- “NoClue Day”, sorry “Blue Day” theme (perhaps changing the volume icon to white too?)- NoClue for the win, here, great looking wallpaper and theme, they look perfect mixed together!!! Maybe add a “Power” button after the clock, like JWM now has, it’s very handy! 🙂
One single remark: the icons are very small!!! Some of us have bad eye sight!
…But: I don’t use “virtual desktops” and tend to turn them off- but Yellow for the active desktop in Sunny Day? why not blue, to match the rest of the color scheme, Noclue? And why include both “BlueDay” and Sunny “Day”?
-For JWM- “Shades of gray” theme looks a lot like JWM’s “Sunny Day”, but I like “Black” best, it has very good contrast and matches the default wallpaper very well (once again the same volume icon suggestion). I loved the fact that IceWM’s “Sunny day” theme uses a menu icon, I can implement the same in JWM, also adding a show desktop icon…
-For FluxBox- “Numix” (with more contrast on the title bar’s fonts) or “ModernBlueFlux” (I like ModernBlue more, if the title bar colors are “fixed” :-))

The menu- I’ve always liked the idea of having quick access to the most used/needed applications on the beginning of the menu… But I never got the reasoning of the separator line between the file manager and the web browser- this first 4 applications are the “essential ones”, no harm grouping them all together!

There were some comments about “Conky”- and I have to say that the first think I though when I fired up antiX 19b2, in JWM Black theme- was “wow” perfect… but now Conky feels even more out of place!!!
-So, some suggestions about Conky too:
Note: it’s true that now, ICeWM users have most of the info on the bar, next to the clock, and they probably don’t need conky…
For those like me, that like to have conky available, here are some ideas:
        – Remove lines with the OS name, the time and the date, I can’t see a real use for the Uptime info either (I commented out lines 227-230 on my Conky config file, my line 231 groups the OS and desktops’s name are reads ” ${color}${alignc}antiX ${exec disp=${DISPLAY#:}; disp=${disp%.[0-9]}; cat $HOME/.desktop-session/desktop-code.$disp 2>/dev/null} “)
        – I grouped together Res and DPI lines into one
        – Also changed the font to ubuntu (optional)
        – Most times the “Freq” info is not needed (commented out line 236), CPU suffices most time, and for the important use: monitoring system resorces, all the used needs really is knowing what percentage of the system resources is being used, right? they look more sleek and modern than this huge ones… For CPU I used cpubar, with height of “3”, I used that height for all bars…
        – Remove the Used/ Total: they are not really needed and also are not multilingual, like most of the rest of the text (I commented out the original 256 line)…
I fiddled with showing RAM usage as a small bar next to the CPU. I have very 2 old pcs and always keep an eye on CPU and RAM usage, having both next to each other in a graphical way is great (but a matter of personal preference)
Just commenting out or altering the initial line makes the conky fit right into the “Lines” wallpaper, without even altering any of the bars (this on a very basic 1024×768 display,Conky fits perfectly on any resolution above that…)
But is you implement all the small changes that I talk about (changing the bar sizes) you end up making Conky’s present almost all the same information taking up what looks like a squarer space, that has the plus of fitting really well in the new default “lines” wallpaper!

        Just to wrap up:
        – To make the new boot splash screen look even better, maybe use some other icon as “loading bar” other than “o”? Perhaps something like the “Tofu” character?
        – The same applies to the “to ram” loading indicator- “=>” looks very DOS like, maybe also just some block character, to make it look like a normal loading bar?
        – Also change the reboot and power off text to something like “Rebooting” not just “Reboot”, etc…
        – The “Exit Session” Window also does not need windows decorations- I changed that in my session exit script, adding a “Back” button, if the user does not really want to exit…
        – I still think allowing GUI apps for basic stuff is essential- recently a user was expecting to get a system updater in the final version, anti shot him down. antiX does not need a service always running checking for updates, but the ability to click a icon and update the system is handy… I made such a yad script (that I have to adapt to run in antiX19 and can be much improved) and put had a it’s icon next to the clock- just click it, confirm, enter password, see up-gradable applications and confirm that you want to update, all in a GUI mode, the user may see the terminal running but does not need to interact with it- it’s basically what users can do via Synaptic, but presented in a way they are more used to…)

P.S.- I attach my “conky2” file. If anyone wants to test it, backup your current conkyrc file and paste conkyrc2 there, and restart conky… I took a screenshot to post here, but I misplaced it… 🙂

EDIT: on the new splash screen- perhaps it should not say to press xxx to see the “boot process” because it’s the very same message that shows up when the user is logging off- maybe it should say “for more details” instead?

        P.

This is all off-topic but: Wow, so much yellow almost burned my eyes out, NoClue! 🙂
Some yellow “notes” do provide a nice contrast, I do have to admit to that…
Anyway, very nice work, congratulations on all this new brilliant stuff incorporated in antiX…

So, nix it… and “to hell with” all the JWM and fluxbox users ?!?

Maybe you’re not aware but, you finally got it exactly to the point.

Since the basic requirements for different WM’s and also for 32 & 64-bit editions are more or less, the exact opposites, you don’t want’t to build anything ‘all-in-one’ but:

              1. 32-bit Edition
              1.1 IceWM Edition
              1.2 FluxBox Edition

              2. 64-bit Edition
              2.1 IceWM Edition
              2.2 FluxBox Edition

Too much work? Then don’t do it. Better make one working Edition, then one ‘all-in-one’, where nothing’s working as it should.

              As of #24540

FYI: you can right-click the panel and …

… maybe you also SHOULDN’T HAVE TO, if the developers developed it properly, as they should have …

You see, one can do almost anything but, we still talk about the DEFAULTS as, that’s what the most people use.

WYSIWYG … ‘The first impression …

Those ‘all-in-one’ concepts never worked and will never work.

Just have a look at the newest, handy 32”, 16k Smartphone, or at the latest flying submarine racing tractor stuck in the mud or …

All you get is shi**y IceWM because, you have to use the PNG because of FluxBox or … you name it.

@anticapitalista and the rest of the team: I don’t want to ask too much but here it goes:

Some suggestions to be added to CC for easy instalation:
-VLC media player just because it’s now almost the de facto stantard for playing multimedia files (mpv is lighter and I use it all the time, but it’s making like easy for the common user)
-Surf browser – just because it’s so light that it fits right into the lean an mean antiX moto… Most people never heard about it, but it’s great for running one page only- ex: from the CLI type surf youtube.com and you have a dedicated window for playing youtube videos! Excelent for using webmail services, on-line office suites, reading news, etc)
-deluge bittorrent – it now has a option to view video files that are being downloaded, if you are into that, it can be handy
-deadbeaf music player- it’s great, lean and mean
And just to make antiX a more complete distro: dunst (for notifications) and compton ( for eye candy). Also maybe an option to mount google drive as a network drive (I have a how-to about that in the tips section, it uses a file meant for ubuntu, but it can even be extracted and run directly, without risking trashing the user’s system)
I would even suggest also ungoogled chromium, because it’s lighter and even more private than chromium, but it’s risky, using forks of browsers, I know- just look at what happened to palemoon… (the archive hack).
Note: I installed and tested, on antiX19b2 live: dunst, compton and surf web browser (surf complains about a dependency to play video streams using hardware, play youtube videos slow on my limited hardware…)

Somehow, I’m in agreement with nearly 100% of your July 16, 2019 at 8:49 am post.

                  The wallpaper:
howabout… for SLiM, use a version of the “4 windmills” wallpaper, with yellow sky swapped for blue
(maybe even insert the Don_Quixote silhouette, as an insiders joke)
                  and
either same (sans Don_Quixote) for wallpaper, or the cityscape with matching blue moon.
Hopefully that would achieve an agreeable (not “burn out PPC’s eyes”) result.

If users don’t like our default ‘shitty IceWM’ all-in-one distro, tough!
There are plenty of other distros to choose from.

Now – please test beta2 for bugs and forget the aesthetics and trying to turn antiX into ex-(L)Ubuntu!

I agree on the testing not the changing esp. for alpha and betas.
I’m currently using stretch on most and using 19-B1 on my other 2.
I’m setting up a few usb for B2 on mine here. So I’ll be using the
live dvd and a usb to check 19-b2.
As far as people wanting to change the distro … I thought that is

I downloaded and 256 check summed the 64-bit everything good and did
a live usb with uefi no problems ( I did advanced on settings and told
                              to make ext4 fs)
I.E. — (control center — hardware — live usb maker — show advanced options)
then make the ext4 fs option and also did gpt partition on the usb and the stick
created and booted flawless from it ( didn’t check the boot screen options, default
worked and looked good) I personally change to let the text show so I can see any errors
on an hdd install so will leave splash checking to others.
I did notice that on first boot I had to use the sound card chooser and change from
hdmi to hda-intel to get sound. I had to change the mixer settings to hear anything
and also had to logout and back in for volume icon on the taskbar to be there.
No noticeable bugs yet on live usb to speak of. ( I have to check things out a bit).

EXACTLY too. Maybe a hobby/toy OS and a server OS (good at both). Nobody can agree 100% and has their

You suggested it in one of the MX forum comments, but I gather you didn’t update your kernel to a 4.19 version (it isn’t that easy if you don’t remaster first before using the Live-USB kernel updater). We will explore this option as a last resort. -Can’t I install a different kernel with synaptic?

Yes, yes. Sorry about that. I missed the part about you installing it. I thought it was a live USB. Yes. Install the new kernel and restart. hopefully this is the fix.

Try this. Select the motherboard sound card (The AMD one) using the card selector program, then play an audio file and then go check if there are any errors with dmesg
                                dmesg | grep “HDA Intel”
Paste it here. grep finds nothing in dmesg for HDA Intel

Then probably HDA Intel isn’t properly working. Try again, but this time search for “hdaudio” and “audio”
                                dmesg | grep "hdaudio"
Somewhere the driver is not properly loading or connecting to the device. Hopefully the kernel update will fix it. If it doesn’t, then dmesg will have to display some kind of error somewhere. We can try searching for other key words.

Ok, so what if the “lines” were shorter, and add Memory status to the taskbar on IceWM? Now, with FluxBox and JWM all looks good (try it with lines file below), and with IceWM, you can turn off the conky if you was to save resources because most of what you wanted is down on the taskbar. The screenprint is with Clearview Blue Medium. I’m no graphics expert, but it looks good to me and the image is 1/3 of the size.

PS: Below I changed the theme to BlueDay that NoClue had intended to go with it. It looks nice too, IMO.
