      Yeah, that’s my goof!

I should have shown how something simple/useful like app-select works instead of showing a candy store of semi-foreign apps.

You covered the important information that someone would want to know about it, and laid it out nicely, starting with the familiar Main menu, then going into what is special/different and then bringing them back to other packages that they would want to know where to find.

        “your own worst critic”.

I would assume that the menu will be fixed in an update, and will match the video.

13 minutes is a lot of work to produce as it is and a good span in order to keep someone interested to the end.

If you are motivated and have the time, maybe a shorter follow-up video introducing applications for locating other applications and features – App Select, Menu Manager, Rox Panel [toggle], etc. (easy for me to suggest, who knows nothing about video production…)

antiX has a lot of rich, unique features – a real specialty amongst the herd. It does not conform to the bloated-norm, yet is loaded, light and fast.

However, it is viewed, and not seen for what it actually is and can do. Most of the antiX review videos show the features at length that are in every other distro and flash briefly on those that are not. And it is good to have those out there also, to draw in users who will see what they are accustomed to, and maybe not be hesitant to try it out and discover a multi-faceted, flexible, adaptable, well supported jewel.

One point you might want to consider, is that when looking for information about antiX, the search in Youtube, would typically be “antiX 19 review…”, “linux antiX 19 introduction…” or something similar, to have it turn up where it would get more views.

Well, the BIG goof was just doing it spontaneously, no script, no notes, no planned sequence.

I went in only wanting to demo using Dave’s WinGrid and IceWM’s WinArrange at a quick pace to show people how easy it is to move and optionally resize the windows into a tile like form, or not, with keystrokes that anyone can remember.

LOL, it gives one an appreciation of the quality of D.O.’s videos.

I don’t think D.O. has any antiX 19 videos out yet.

I believe most review videos are done spontaneously, not scripted, as you did.

Been running antiX for a couple of years, and if I had viewed your video before attempting to configure my usual settings in B3, it would have saved a lot of time.

To find it in Youtube you would need to know to search specifically with “antiX19b3 demo”. Unfortunately, not likely that a lot of people will see it by the typical general search for a new release.

Bob- overall- great “showcase” video for antiX- I considered doing something along those lines, but, my english accent would make the video hard to understand for many native english speakers…
The only thing I noticed was that, when I played the video, it had huge horizontal black bars on top and bottom of the screen, like if it was resized.
App-select is still not very well known, and needs all the exposure it can get. My take on it is that it complements the menus on all desktops antiX uses- they all lack the now almost universal “search” option. It’s, for now a antiX exclusive app (it should run great on any other linux distro- it runs fine on MX). Power users could use the already provided OOTB dmenu, or j4-menu or rofi as app launchers- I used j4-menu- it’s faster- near instant, even on very old hardware, but does not provide all the details app-select does (icons, exec info, etc).
I would probably also have showed off the new iceWM themes (or even also Fluxbox themes too or the more modern looking JWM look- the only one of antiX desktops that comes out of the box with a convinient Exit icon near the clock- and if you click the clock, yad calendar pops out- a tiny modern detail, most people probably are not aware).

Clap, clap- very good job, mate!

                P.

It might have been resized for the forum. On Youtube, those black lines should not be there.

Since I didn’t make the video easy to find anyway, I could redo it better.

I hate to admit the things I have no clue on, like Fluxbox and Herb*. Its a shame, because the demo should show all 4 window managers so people see the flexibility available for the price of about 4 clicks. I suppose I should try to figure them out enough to put on the screen for a minute or two. Things really should be easier, though, IMO.

JWM, I can work, no problem, but its like IceWM without the bells and whistles to save a few mb of memory.

IceWM wise, I can make it do lots of stuff. Themes, I am actually quite good with, and even have modified them by hand to be the way I want.

I have tried j4-menu and found no advantage over dmenu which I have tried but don’t use. It just isn’t a nice interface today. In 1987 it would have been good, but today it’s asking a lot for normal people to learn. Even on the Pentium III App-select is just about perfect from that respect. I can wait a second or for an easy way to get what I want. My kids could work it. All I’d need to do is tell them what key to hit.

                      Fluxbox:

Easy-right click on desktop and the menu comes up, your running apps are in the bar below, which is described as not being a “Toolbar” but the “slit”. The files can be edited same as IceWM from the CC-Edit Fluxbos Settings – menu, init(preferemces), startup, etc. I wipe everything in the menu except Terminal and Exit, then put all that is in my “personal” menu between them and use Rox-Panel if I need anything else.

You will see that it is familiar, and might like it.

                      ———

Herbsluft WM: – a tiling WM run by keys and commands. If you venture in there – remember that mod/shift and q (q = quit) gets you back to login screen. [mod key = windows key (“super key”?)].

The commands are right there when opened. Believe me, not many are looking to run this WM or know anything about it, but it is there for the rare individual who does. Just a brief click on it or just a description should suffice.

You might find it interesting actually, because of your key-knowledge and scripting experience.

                      “What is it?

herbstluftwm is a manual tiling window manager for X11 using Xlib and Glib. Its main features can be described with:

                      * the layout is based on splitting frames into subframes which can be split again or can be filled with windows (similar to i3/ or musca)

                      * tags (or workspaces or virtual desktops or …) can be added/removed at runtime. Each tag contains an own layout

                      * exactly one tag is viewed on each monitor. The tags are monitor independent (similar to xmonad)

                      * it is configured at runtime via ipc calls from herbstclient. So the configuration file is just a script which is run on startup. (similar to wmii or musca)”
                      —————————-

If you are thinking of re-doing anything, possibly a little more volume for those with older laptops and a weaker sound system. antiX has “Pre-amp” in Alsa – most do not. However your demonstration could be used even with no sound…

Why not re-name and put it out there? Then do a Youtube general search “Linux antiX 19 (new, 2019, tutorial, or review etc) see where it turns up.

The more positive videos, gives antiX more exposure and support. With it nearing the “Final”, now is a good time to get more information about it out there.

If you were inclined to do a series of shorts, “off the cuff”, unscripted, without notes, that would maybe pull at more people’s attention vs something lengthy and complicated all in one gulp. Just featuring a unique app/feature or two. They don’t need to see it all at once. If you are focusing on a feature that you are personally interested in, it would be even better, because your interest would make others interested too, as opposed to doing it because “you should”.

Anyway, even short videos are a lot of work to take on, but have more confidence in what you have already done.

I tried again but got nailed when I changed the desktop to Fluxbox, and hit the bug where the IceWM options disappear from the menu after that. I did ok otherwise with Fluxbox, but kept stumbling for lack of a menu button and no way to get back to the desktop to right click without minimizing each window until I could see some desktop. I’m sure if I used it all the time I would know what to do, but when you are trying to do a live demo/review and install, seconds are precious.

I have no chance with Herb. I tried it once and had no idea what to do.

Maybe I will just use IceWM, its what I know…

I’m trying to do a review/demo/install all rolled into one booting from my new fast 238 gb homemade flashdrive. Even copying the whole thing to memory with toram, the entire boot is 15 seconds total, so on my fast I7 this thing is just blazing fast!

Yes, I will try again… 4 tries so far this evening. I would like to make it all the way through with no goofs on my part… Quite a feat that would be…

BTW, would it be possible to get app-select to work on Ctrl+Space on all the desktops?

And I was happy to see LxTask when I clicked the CPU monitor. Good job devs!!!

                          Sorry you had such trouble.

If you lose the menu for “other desktops” and can still log-out, at the log-in screen, tap F1 key and you can see the various desktops and window managers below and just stop at the one you want to go to, and login.

Ctrl+Space doesn’t do anything in Fluxbox or IceWM on my install. Not sure what that means.

It was nice that you pointed out those monitors in the taskbar tray in the video.

                          Making videos is not easy!

I’m not able to edit my videos with any of the 3 video editors I installed (kdenlive, flowblade and openshot). I tried and wasn’t able to edit (cut) out a few bad spots in the videos. I’m not a graphics person. I’ve been able to edit videos from my cameras under windows, but no longer have a windows machine able to do it.

I will try very short videos next time, but basically am screwed for creating videos if I can’t do simple editing.

On my windows video editor I could highlight from one point to another and press delete, but I can’t highlight with any of these.

Ctrl+Space is programmed in IceWM to bring up the new app-select menu. It works beautifully.

I redid it, I think covering IceWM pretty well. It ran pretty long for just covering IceWM, but I only made 2 goofs this time that I noticed, and I included most of the things I wanted to cover as far as running the system from hard drive. I didn’t cover the install or running it live, or Fluxbox or JWM other than to show where to find them on the menu. Perhaps people more familiar with Fluxbox, JWM and Herb could do a demo of those in a much better light than I could.

                                  AntiX 19 B3:Bluetooth support.
A problem seems to have appeared for me in antiX 19 (tested on B3) vs. antiX 17.2: Bluetooth is being turned off after boot and cannot be successfully turned on via Blueman. In effect Blueman does not see any and offers to turn on bluetooth interface, which blinks for a second and goes off.
In antiX 17.2 this is not happening. Bluetooth stays on and Blueman sees bluetooth gadgets and pairing produces no visible errors however sound still fails to go through bluetooth gadgets. Tested on four combinations – two different models of laptops and two different gadgets.
Is there something else that is needed in antiX 19 to make it work?
