Is exfat USB flash drives or sticks working for someone? When I plug it in nothing happens. Only Gparted can see it, but cant mount.

Exfat implementation has very much changed the last years, so antiX 19 (buster-based) is completely different from antiX 21 (bullseye-based) here, and kernel above 5.7 have included exfat support while kernels below need external exfat drivers still. So the questions are:

        — is it kernel above 5.7 or below?
        — is exfat-fuse package installed?
        — is exfat-utils package installed? (antiX 17/19 only)
        — is exfatprogs package installed? (antiX 21 only)

        try the commands:

        sudo mount -t exfat ...
        sudo mount.exfat-fuse ...

Since I don’t use (even dont have) exfat drives, that’s all I can tell you about it, sorry. Maybe somebody else here?

I concur with Robin. If exfat isn’t recognized by default with antiX, then it’s a kernel issue. Try the long-term 5.10 kernel release, available to install from cli-aptiX, assuming that 5.10 is compatible with your hardware’s make/model. I had exactly the same issue with an exfat formatted USB stick: changing to either the 5.10 kernel, or a more recent one, fixed it.

mikey777, Since I don’t want to kill the system, can you point me the right way to update the kernel, please? How can I do this?

Use the app called cli-aptiX – menu -Applications – antiX

              Or use synaptic

              Or use command line.

Which version of antiX do you have? 32 or 64 bit?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

So, I have updated the kernel to 5.10, but there is no differences for the exfat usb drive. It is still not working.

Have you installed exfatprogs and exfat-dkms?
                      You might need to reboot.

I assume you are running installed to a disk and not running live.

No, its just exfat-fuse and exfat-utils. Do I need exfat-dkms too?

Yes, its just a normal system, installed on 60GB HDD.

Also me not sure about this exfat-dkms package. This package was not preinstalled in my antiX 19 full (frugal installed from 19.3 iso 32bit once, but constantly most recently apt-upgraded completely and also upgaded to 4.19.0-256-antix.1-686-smp-pae kernel) and obviously hasn’t got installed by any apt-upgrade since.

No idea what these dkms packages (I have come across some of them similar, for other programs like virtualbox already) are good for. They have been installed automatically together with some other packages. Must be something related to the kernel. The general package description doesn’t mean anything to me, I’m not a programmer: „Unterstützungsrahmen für dynamische Kernelmodule”. No idea what to make of this description. If such a dkms package is actually needed, why wasn’t it installed in antiX full ISO already, or is set as dependency in the respective driver or program package? Please don’t read this as accusation or complaint in any way, this is a simple knowledge question, I actually don’t know about this, and my search results from internet are quite unspecific about it. The description of the very package itself is not helpful either: “exFAT filesystem driver for Linux kernel”. Nothing else described. Wasn’t the driver built into the kernel at least above 5.7 already as I’ve read?

Anyway, it has an installationcandidate also for me:

                          $ apt-cache policy exfat-dkms
                          exfat-dkms:
                            Installiert: (keine)
                            Installationskandidat: 5.9-1~contribs1
                            Versionstabelle:
                               5.9-1~contribs1 500
                                  500 https://mirror.eu.oneandone.net/linux/distributions/mx/packages/antix/buster buster/main i386 Packages

Should I or shouldn’t I install this package manually now, to be prepared when I come across an exfat drive some day accidentally? Or will exfat work without this, or will it break the possibly working exfat functionallity on my system, since I don’t have a kernel above 5.7 ?

Robin, this command works now and successfully mounts the exfat USB drive! Thank you! Of course, you need to do it manually. But, at least, it works!

exfat-dkms, as far as I know is the older implementation of exfat driver. Even before the fuse.

So, I have updated the kernel to 5.10, but there is no differences for the exfat usb drive. It is still not working.

Enter either uname -a or uname -r in terminal just to make sure you are running kernel 5.10 …

[Edit: just seen your reply above – glad you got it working]

The problem is completely solved now. You can make EXFAT USB drive works fine and automounts as normal, by downgrading the exfat-fuse to 1.2.8-1 version.
