      Hi,

I used an older ACER Travelmate 290 (2GB memory, 1.3 GHz Intel CPU, internal DVD-drive, no external USB-boot) successfully with Lubuntu-32 (18.04LTS), for many years. Now, because Lubuntu’s support 32bit machines, and for safety etc. has ended for more than a year, I decides to sustitute it with Antix-21, which I have also running on an ASUS eeePC 900. But surprisingly the TM290 does not boot completely, gets stuck issueing a message:

      Failed to load ldlinux.c32
Boot failed: press a key to retry…

      A retry gives no success.
But, Antix 19.4 boots completely into the live desktop, without any problem.

Can anybody give some advice whats wrong here and what could be done?

      Thanks in advance Hans/Germany

For a slightly more up to date antiX version (not quite 21, but almost)- you can try antiX 19.5- it came out recently…
For antiX 21 – you can try this user made version available in this thread: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/remasterizacao-do-antix-21-completo-de-32-e-64-bits-com-o-kernel-4-4-0-296/ – you’ll have to run it trough an on-line translator, since it’s in Portuguese – but the iso it self seems to be available in the same languages as antiX is – please do read the way to solve some tiny problems with localization, deep on that thread…

          Hi PPC,

tnx for your very fast response.
I read the portuguese text in your link. As i understood, the person made these remasters because of problems with SiS and VIA graphics. I forgot to mention that my TM290 has ATi Radeon 350 graphics. Unfortunately, he only offers the full Antix versions, which heve to be burned on a DVD. I use(d) the base version which fits on a 800MB oversize CD.
Furthermore, i tried to learn about that file ldlinux.c32, ans searched the web. It is obviously called by the bootloader (Syslinux 6.03) in a very early stage of the boot process. I think, at this stage the grapphics driver if not yet active. I’m afraid that the problem can only be solved by altering someting in the Antix-21 iso file, which is far above my abilities, as I’m not a Linux coder.

          cheers Hans

My recommendation – burn a plop boot cd (search for that on-line or here on the forum)- it’s a live cd that allows you to boot from it and then boot from a usb-drive – I used that twice on an old laptop that can’t boot from usb devices…
This allows you to test not only this particular antiX version, but any other distro you may want to test, and has a plus- installing from a usb pendrive is many times faster than installing from a cd/dvd

Tnx again! I have heard of this “plop” booting, but never got it tested. This is now the moment to do so. I’ll just start to search the web for it.
I’ll report any results, but this might not happen today.

              cheers

Bingo! I successfully started a live system of Antix-21_386_base from USB by using a plopboot 5.0.15 boot CD, and am just about to install it.
However, Antix-21 should also be bootable from CD/DVD. Maybe one member of the Antix crew can apply some patch into the next ISO update.

                cheers Hans

                  antiX-21 does boot from cd/dvd.
How did you burn it to dvd? Using what app?

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                    Dear admin and Antix-Guru,

I burned the disc with ImgBurn on a MS-Win10pro machine. But – and maybe this caused the problem – i didn’t use a DVD but a CD with 800MB capacity, as I just realized. Sorry, my fault! Unfortunately, the Antix-21-base ISO is slightly larger than the 800MB CD, so it got “overburnt”. However, ImgBurn did not issue any error message.
I herewith promise to burn the ISO on a DVD an try it once more. And I will give a report about the result.

                    Thnaks/cheers Hans

p.s. Antix and MX are my favourite Linux distros, I use them both for years now. Superb!

Report: my ACER TM290 boots antix-21 perfectly, from a well-burnt DVD. Got it installed a while a go and it runs 99% like a charm.
I have to use an external PCMCIA card, because the internal WiFi module is broken. A Conceptronix C300RC (Ralink RT25xx chipset) works perfectly, out of the box. But a Siemens Gigaset PC card 54 (Broadcom BCM4306 v3) does not. I’ll adress this in a already started thread.

Thanks again fur usefull advices, and sorry for being inattentive with the sizes of ISO and CD.

                      Regards Hans
