::I hope this enables one of you experts to diagnose this problem. It was endemic in release 19, I have had it on 19.3, 19.4 and 19.5, and now on 21, and not always using the same kernel. I now believe it is not a solid fault, when I tried to make it happen the other day I was unable to do so.
I’m no expert, and people may disagree strongly with what I’m about to say, but I stay as far away from chromium as possible. I personally feel that it is something that Google does not give the kind of attention that it needs. If you look at the current list of chromium’s open bug reports, there are over 14,000 that are “untriaged” – or have never been really looked at by anyone. There are currently over 63,000 open bug reports. There are other problems, like Debian being unable to package a new version for months at a time sometimes. If I needed to use a chromium based browser, I would use something like Brave or Vivaldi, where there is a dedicated team that is taking responsibility for the user’s experience.
Just my two cents. Hope I don’t start a flame war. If what I say makes you feel angry, just realize I’ve rarely ever even used chromium and am simply giving my armchair quarterback opinion, so I’m not invested in it enough to fight about it. I could very well be wrong, chromium could be a fantastic browser, and maybe your freezes have nothing to do with Google treating it like a red-headed stepchild.

::The freeze in Chromium has taken place again and this time I have (limited) diagnostics…
Try running chromium in a terminal emulator. Maybe you will see messages that will give you valuable information to solve the problem.

::The reason I never posted these freezes before is because I always suspected chromium to be to blame, and after reading andyprough’s comments I’m now convinced. I now have a comparative example of a freeze in chromium which did not take place when I repeated the identical circumstance in firefox-esr. I still like chromium, it’s very user friendly but I will now look round for alternatives. The 2 screenshots are of chromium and firefox-esr doing exactly the same action, same files same everything except workspace used and browser used. The htop screenshot is not included as it shows nothing useful. Looks conclusive to me.

::For completeness, the freezes I saw had nothing to do with chromium or google chrome. I don’t use it.

::I uninstalled chromium and tried to install ungoogled-chromium, but the install failed, because I was using the control panel installer I did not see the reason as the terminal diagnostics vanished too quickly. I’ll give it a try in a terminal to see why when time permits.
