      Hi,

I have created an antiX 21 installation video for beginners. The video is titled:

“antiX linux: The best way to revive an old computer.”

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCTaUAP6sSg

The video is 52 minutes long, and is directed specifically at the following user case:
-Reviving an old computer, in this case an Acer Pentium M 32-bit system from 2005.
-”Regular” users who come from Win/Mac, and have no previous experience with Linux.

As a result, the video only shows one of the possible ways of installation, and that is a “regular” install by USB/DVD, using the entire hard disk, without separate partitions.

I also try to give a basic overview of the most basic system settings, most of this comes from the point of view of accessibility.

I also try to do a performance test. This turned out to revolve around streaming video.

antiX/forum oldtimers will probably think I’m “feeding the audience with a teaspoon”, which is a Norwegian way of saying I’m trying to make it simple enough that anyone can follow. (Dealing with a linux distro, I felt that was kind of an impossible task really.) Some may also think that I was too limited in displaying the choices you have, but that was a conscious decision. I wanted to show mostly one way of doing things to get people started.

I have looked at some of PPC and other users excellent suggestions for first time users, and I tried to include them where I felt it was relevant. I always feel those kinds of things make more sense when you actually show them. But these choices are subjective, and this is just my subjective take on the matter. And I mostly just showed a single way of doing things.

CHALLENGES OF MAKING AN INSTALLATION VIDEO: Making a video like this was a challenge I made for myself, and it inevitably turned out to be much more complex than I envisioned when I started out. What kind of prior knowledge should you assume people have? How long should such a video be? What range of possibilities and choice should you display? So, the only thing I can safely say, is that the video contains elements that I myself was curious about at some point. For example, the section where I talk about deciding on 32 or 64 bits was based on issues I had to relate to for the first time when I started trying out Linux. Also, the somewhat bewildering choices when you face the issue of choosing a flavor for the first time was something I spent way too much time on.

A NOTE ON SUBTITLES: I read basically everything from a script, and could have uploaded the script for the subtitles. That would have meant time coding everything. When I reviewed the video, I found that auto subtitles worked so well, I decided to keep them. The one thing that was funny, was how many different ways YouTube decided to transcribe “antiX”. It came out as “antics”, “antiques” and a few other strange variations, and only rarely as intended. I hope auto translations work OK.

I post this here on the forum for two reasons:

1.) I would like it to be easily available for the target audience, and I would like the target audience to critique it. Forum admins are free to pin it if they so would like. I have watched a number of videos that deal with the same topic. I found none for antix 21, so that was a good reason to do one. But a lot of the videos didn’t have the limited scope I was aiming for. So, if you’re a regular Windows/Mac user looking to revive an old computer, and you watch my video, let me know how well or how poorly it worked. I’m quite sure I missed something fundamental.

2.) I would like the experienced users of this forum to take a look if they can spare the time, and critique it. For example: Did I make the right assumptions on the target audience? How well did I explain everything? What kind of misunderstandings did I invite, and what outright errors did you find? Did the performance tests make any sense? I would be happy if you delivered such a critique in the limited context of what I was aiming for.

One thing I could not have done differently in the video was my heavy Norwegian accent. I always thought my English sounded more authentic than it in fact does, so that’s one thing I learned already 🙂

      Thanks for reading this far!

I’m watching the video now. It is very good!

One thing I could not have done differently in the video was my heavy Norwegian accent.

I wouldn’t worry about that. Your voice is very clear. Easy to understand.
(I sometimes have more trouble understanding native English accents from America/Britain/Australia than I do your speech.) 🙂

I particularly like how you went through the Control Centre to set up/adjust your settings, after installation.

The performace tests were good. I think it will help people see if they can squeeze a bit more performace from their old machine, or allow them to use it for something, instead of throwing it away.

        Very well done!

P.S., The Muzak was enjoyable, too! 😉

          Hello Punranger.

I want to congratulate you for your video about installing antiX 21.
The second gem or positive for your video was mine.
As you spoke slowly (as you should with all YouTube videos), the Google/YouTube machine translation subtitles are almost all understandable. In some parts of the video, YouTube was unable to generate the subtitles.
If you have the text of everything you said in the video, I can use automatic translation to generate the text in pt_BR and I’ll review it. You can later make this translation file available for download on YouTube. The subtitles of automatic Google/YouTube translations added to a text file in English and another in Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, etc. can help many people understand at least 99.9999% of your video and text. I can’t commit to translating the subtitles because it’s a lot of work and I spend many hours and days to complete this work, like the subtitle of the Dolphin_Oracle video about Frugal AntiX Installation.
You did very well in teaching how to change Desktop from Rox-IceWM to zzz-IceWM, it is much more logical to teach how to change Desktop than teaching to change preferences to try to turn Rox-IceWM into zzz-IceWM .

          Thank you very much!

            Thank you for positive comments!

Regarding subtitles: I will consider uploading the script. I would need to timecode it. I’ll update the thread if and when I get it done.

Yes, I thought it was good, too.

Doing it starting from a Windows system is a realistic scenario for people unfamiliar with Linux.

Excellent video! I wish I had been able to watch something like this when I was first getting started with antiX.
