Thanks for the heads up. I’m excited for this. Really. I just have a couple questions:

      1. Will the SysVinit version still be a thing? If so, that’s good because I currently run a SysVinit version of AntiX 19 and would like to make sure that the upgrade is consistent.
      2. Will there be a step-by-step guide on how to upgrade? I heard there is a way without deleting and reformating the entire hard drive and I would love to know how to do that.

Again, thank for the heads up.

      Sincerely,
      Chase

Sysvinit release is still the “main release”, but the runit release has gotten so many improvements compared to antiX-19 I think it can be considered a very good alternative.

There are a few topics related to this, with some steps to follow. As long as you make a backup before starting the upgrade process you should be safe.

any “real life” benefits compared to SysVinit?

Tried to print, still not working

After remaster then reboot I get no print service available

            running sudo runit-service-manager.sh
allowed me to start cups again.

            Tried to print Not working.

            Deleted printer using control tool

Recreated setup using controll center tool

Cups access log claims printing was succesful, the printer did not wake up so no data sent to it.

                1. To the best of my knowledge. SysVinit and runit will be available.

                2. There is information. Short answer: save and reuse the /home directory and keep anything you want in that directory tree.

I nearly always reuse /home and it has worked for years. You can also save things you want on a removable drive and then copy them as needed. That is also a good backup strategy.
Multiple copies of important things is always wise in case of unexpected hardware or software failure and more often to recover from human error.

I’ve found them both to be usable and our runit implementation continues to improve.
The SysVinit implementation is rock solid and stable in every way. If it has any advantage over any other approaches, well-known behavior and stability remain the advantages.

Regarding runit, there are potential advantages to gain on hardware with several processors; many, perhaps most “relatively recent” AMD64 and X64 chipsets fall into that category, so for systems less than ten years old, there are efficiencies running multiple processes and programs at the same time, and our runit implementation continues to improve. In the best case scenarios, speed and efficiency may be a gain with runit; without question, known behavior and stability are advantages of the time-tested SysVinit.

Personally, I’ve found both methods to provide acceptable levels of both performance and stability.

Good you found out what was needed for the driver.

                            Story mode [ON]
Printing on linux was always difficult for me. Every time I tried on antiX 19 I just gave up and booted into the Windows partition to connect to the printer (that even had trouble installing the drivers in Windows), and got to print from there.

At the end of last year or beginning of this year (I am nt too sure), I decided to give it a try again on the antiX 21-alpha. At that time I was heavily exploring runit, and anticapitalista had done all the heavy lifting. I decided, after reading a bit more on how to enable/disable start/stop runit services to give it a try. I was amazed how easy it was this time to print. I enabled cups service, I went to the Control Centre > Hardware > Print Settings, explored a bit and added the printer there, changed the LC_PAPER locale variable to use the ISO standard of paper (A4 size instead of “Letter”), and printed without a hitch! I was expecting lots of trouble but it was sooooo easy. I was really surprised and now, just a few days ago, I was able to scan and print legal documents much faster and easier than how I did on Windows.

For me, this antiX release is the best yet (though I only have experience with antiX 17 and 19, and really cannot compare to past releases), and I am fully invested in the runit init.

runit release has gotten so many improvements compared to antiX-19

any “real life” benefits compared to SysVinit?

I don’t know if this can be considered “real life benefits”, but runit services are waaaay easier to manage compared to sysvinit ones, the boot speed is great (for multi-core CPUs it makes a difference), and the easiness to create user services (I thing I was never able to do with syvinit) makes runit a winner for me.
Probably these kind of things aren’t what the average user will notice, so not exactly “real life benefits”.
Still, even though I say it myself (and have what we call here “creator blindness”), I think the runit-service-manager GUI makes it easier to control and reduce the running services compared to how it was done in sysvinit (though now that I understand services better, I think managing sysvinit services isn’t that difficult either).

The above real-life experience of Runit vs. Sysvinit, advantages of Runit. To me like a jump from (pretty much dead) legacy to a capable, modern design. Service Manager is now in Control center… Thank you Xecure for moving antiX forward…

Not me. anticapitalista makes all this possible.

I am very happy to be part of this community, where my contributions are considered. I wish the devuan effort would have gone here instead of creating their own thing, pushing antiX forwards even more, but that is just my irrelevant opinion.

Yes, indeed, this is well understood. Anticapitalista is the owner of antiX venture, in control of investment capital (Intellectual I mean). I do appreciate anti’s vision and the right strategic decision for advancement of this venture to new highs.
