      Refer to article https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/debian-bits-from-the-release-team-on-merged-usr-and-the-bookworm-release/#post-86163

This will impact the behavior of dpkg for antiX 22 and is an important consideration for us too.

        When I do a new installation, I run this command line;
        “sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales”.

        So, when I update antiX, I only get 4 languages. Here is a small copy of my update;

Generating locales (this might take a while)…
        en_US.ISO-8859-1… done
        en_US.UTF-8… done
        fr_BE.UTF-8… done
        fr_FR.UTF-8… done
        Generation complete.

My suggestion, can you put a button in the control center to activate this function? I have seen in several distributions that there is this kind of function to lighten the distribution. It shouldn’t take up much space in the distribution because the package is already included in the ISO.

        We could also put a button to do the cleanup with this command;
        “sudo dpkg-reconfigure localepurge”

It saves a lot of time to do the updates. antiX will be even faster…

        Best regards,
        Wallon

I agree with Wallon. In my case I only speak American English and recognize a small handful of words in other languages, not nearly enough to justify switching locales or removing dozens of them.

A dialogue during the installation to select the language (default C) would be useful. Not even multilingual people are likely to use more than 5 languages and it would be rare if someone selected ten or more languages and actually used them.

A true linguistics expert could certainly select many languages at installation and add more locales by installing more locale packages.

        Great suggestion! I agree 100%.

I use the localepurge capability but I agree; the ability to select locales at installation (defaulting to a single locale) certainly makes these choices and installation / post-installation work simplified.

          Can we give our suggestions?

          Sure, please do.

          Hi @anticapitalista and @developers,

I had an idea towards the development of antiX and I wanted to include it on this tread.

First a little background to understand the idea. I had been testing the linux libre kernels recently. I use them a lot on some of my systems, but I also use the antiX kernels.

To update the libre gnu kernel, it is very easy. I don’t even need to know what the latest kernel version is.
For example, after sudo apt update, I would type in terminal

          sudo apt install linux-libre-4.9

It would automatically update to the latest 4.9 kernel. For example, today, it installed the following:
          linux-firmware-image-4.9.324-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.324-gnu1

In the past, when I was learning about the libre gnu kernel, I thought that I would have to manually search for the exact version. The way that it is set up, one does not need to know what the latest version it. The command will automatically install the latest version.

So, I was wondering if antiX would have a similar command.
          For example,

          sudo apt install linux-antix-5.10

would automatically install the latest antix 5.10 kernel.

On a 64-bit system, it would install, for example, linux-image-5.10.104-antix.1-amd64-smp and linux-headers-5.10.104-antix.1-amd64-smp.

          On a 32-bit system,

          sudo apt install linux-antix-4.9-pae

would automatically install linux-image-4.9.0-294-antix.1-686-smp-pae and linux-headers-4.9.0-294-antix.1-686-smp-pae.

          And on a 32-bit system,

          sudo apt install linux-antix-4.9-nonpae

would automatically install linux-image-4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp and linux-headers-4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp.

This way, one does not need to know what the latest version of a particular antiX kernel is.

This is just an idea. I thought that I would include it in this tread.

          Thanks for your time.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
At the moment I’m too busy to work full-time on this future release.
However, the good news is that my (internal) alpha builds all work without issues (sysvinit and runit versions).
Hopefully a final release will appear in early September.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Thanks for the update anticapitalista and for the great work that you have shared with us for many years!

I for one, though eager, will wait patiently for whatever you are able to share!

              Looking forward to it!

Thanks for continuing to develop antiX.
I really like this great operating system.
Please don’t rush on the next version. AntiX21 is already great. Everything else is just gravy.

                  Hi Anticapitalista

I hope I’m still on time to make some tiny suggestions also… I was lazy and did not read every single entry on this thread, so, sorry if I repeat some previous suggestions.

1- include, when possible the .desktop files translated by our great translation team (Marcelo has been tireless on that subject)
2- include a .deb GUI package installer ( my debinstaller script is pretty basic, but it does install .deb files and, as a bonus, shows newbies what exactly the system is doing, on a terminal window, but does not require them to type any command on the terminal).
3- On the purely visual part of the system- include in Package Installer, an entry to install extra wallpapers (from previous antiX versions, there are some truly great gems there)
4- I know how you fell about the current antiX defaults, and you have the final say on those- but since the default File Manager is one of the biggest complaints from newbies (that don’t explore the system and do not know they also have ZZZfm already installed)- why not have a entry on the installer (it may even call a simple yad script) that allows user to select the default File Manager (rox/zzz).- I suffered with rox for some time when I started using antiX, even installed another file manager, before I realizes I already had a great one available (spacefm)- and by “great” I mean, one that I don’t have a really hard time using. I’m well aware how powerful and light Rox is… but well, I never really got used to it…
5- Adding FT10 to Package Installer would be great, for the target users of that Transformation Pack…

                  P.

                    1. Of course, but all final .desktop translations have to be up to date at antiX transifex (not antix-linux-community/antix-contribs or any git repos).
                    2. gdebi will definitely NOT be included. I’ll see about your script and hope it doesn’t conflict with anyone wanting to install FT10
                    3. perhaps
                    4. not going to happen, sorry.
                    5. ok

For 2, we should not install a script in 2 separate deb packages as they will error as conflicting.
So the debinstaller script has to be packaged separately from FT-10 or we tell users that want a gui debinataller to install all of FT-10.

Regarding various tools, particularly file managers, which people have strong opinions about (which do differ), perhaps a reasonable compromise for anyone seeking a “different approach” (yet they still appreciate antiX overall), might be either a list of alternatives that *could* be optionally installed, and further, if anyone is so inclined, create a script to either add or replace various tools to customize their own system.

I’m not going to provide any specific tools or suggestions myself because I am quite happy with the way things are, but some simple scripts and alias commands can do wonders; I have shared a few of them over the years.

Each of us is free to modify our systems and support our own choices just as anticapitalista is free to build whatever he chooses.

                        Hello anticapitalista and PPC.

                        1. Of course, but all final .desktop translations have to be up to date at antiX transifex (not antix-linux-community/antix-contribs or any git repos).
Please guide us, tell us what we need to do to deliver all the translation works from “antix-linux-community-contributions/antix-contribs” to be used in “anticapitalista/antix-development”.

                        2. gdebi will definitely NOT be included. I’ll see about your script and hope it doesn’t conflict with anyone wanting to install FT10
Please PPC see the private message I sent you about Debinstaller.

                        3. perhaps
We thank you for considering this possibility.

                        4. not going to happen, sorry.
So we’ll have to continue explaining to newbies how to change the desktop from Rox-IceWM to zzz-ICeWM. This isn’t a problem for me, it’s only a problem for people who don’t have anyone to ask or don’t know how to ask questions here on the forum.

If the anti-capitalist coordinates us, we can help much more than just each one working on their own and without a pre-defined organization. We have a lot of work in progress, among them: desktop-menu (almost 100% perfect to use in official antiX), screenshot2 (100% working perfectly and we are finishing the Help texts), recently-used (tested and ok in the test area of ”antix-linux-community-contributions/antix-contribs”), several translations that were accepted directly by the program maintainer on GitHub or GitLab, for example the CMST ConnMan, being its graphical interface and our file .desktop were accepted by the developer, in addition to other fronts carried out by members of the antiX community.

                        – – – – –

                        2. gdebi will definitely NOT be included. I’ll see about your script and hope it doesn’t conflict with anyone wanting to install FT10
Por favor, PPC veja a mensagem particular que eu te enviei sobre o Debinstaller.

                        3. perhaps
Nós agradecemos por ponderar esta possibilidade.

                        4. not going to happen, sorry.

A problem I have had to deal with in one case.
A quick cartoon style wallpaper with tips and tricks in german made that person quiet
very quickly. Just pointed to menu, explained it can be clicked through and things like
desktops are there to be used and work without the computer exploding.

Added some commands and shortcuts, for cut paste copy delete etc. She still does everything
with the mouse and is the type of user who would like to have a slave to tie her shoelaces
                          on demand..

Maybe also explain that some desktops look very different even daunting but reverting is
easy. And how to do so. Plus point to control center for changing to another less
                          jarring wallpaper :-).

Suggestion from BobC on preferred applications is likely to help some users and adding file manager
                          to categories line rox.

What I have also noticed is on some recent installations the menu was missing many entrys.
This happened on an install from freshly downloaded and updated live media after adding a
                          few applications.
A new user would not know how to show the items. Maybe certain entrys could be locked to show
unless specificaly set to hide from control center.

Having been asked several times, could the activate UFW (firewall) please be reincluded in control

Of course antiX’ owner will decide which kernel to use as default for antiX-22…
In the anticipation of antiX-22, I performed a rudimentary simulation of antiX-22 using the existing antiX-21 runit, *elogind*-free, which is supposed to be the closest approximation of antiX-22:
                              – Using current default kernel 5.1o appears to work perfectly for me. The only issue I am aware of is what was reported by @Mikey777 in terms of booting on a specific model laptop and exfat support. Kernel 5.10 benchmarks the most efficient in memory footprint as I can see.
                              – Kernel 5.15 brings enhanced NTFS support, giving better performance. Memory footprint of this kernel appears to significantly higher than 5.10 though. The worst though from my testing is that kernel 5.15 appears to exhibit compatibility issues with Nouveau driver, resulting in unstable graphic images, which effectively kills the idea of using kernel 5.15 in my case.
                              – Kernel 5.18 (the latest) appears to have fixed problems with Nouveau driver. Graphic images appear to be as stable as with kernel 5.10 in my brief but multiple boot testing. As kernel 5.18 resolves this Nouveau problem I might include this version in my existing master of antiX, along with default and proven kernel 5.10.
Kernel 5.18 appears to have the largest memory footprint though, which seems to me as much as 60M more than kernel 5.10. I could be wrong on the amount though. Will do some more testing.
The worst experience however is that my test antiX appears to exhibit memory leak with kernel 5.18 and 5.15 under the same test conditions as with kernel 5.10. Whether it is caused by kernel or something else working in tandem – that I do not know. However under the same test conditions antiX with kernel 5.10 performs brilliantly. No unexpected memory leaks. Small, fast and rock solid…
In a word, looks like current kernel 5.10 default chosen by anticapitalista for antiX-21 is another example of thought antiX’ owner puts into maximizing efficiency and quality of antiX product…

antiX-22 will ship with legacy 4.9 and ‘modern’ 5.10 kernels.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
