Hi all. I’m trying to get a minimal system up and running.
      Ive got a Dell Wyse 5060 and I’ve fitted it with a RTL8822BE m.2 wifi/bluetooth card.
It’s only got an 8gb ssd, so space is limited, so that’s why I’m here trying to get AntiX up and running on it.

I can’t get the wifi card firmware installed. I can see it in the Terminal with the lspci command, but Connman can’t.
I’m absolutely new to Linux, so if possible could you run me through what I need to do like I’m 5 please?

So far, I’ve run myself around in circles across the internet following the advice given to other people that have had the same problem as me, but I keep hitting a wall when errors occur and I can’t work around them.

The last attempt was to follow a guide that ran me through installing rtlwifi-next wifi firmware.

      git clone https://github.com/mr-fitzie/rtlwifi-next
      cd rtlwifi-next
      sudo make install

      make -C /lib/modules/4.9.0-326-antix.1-amd64-smp/build M=/home/admin/rtlwifi-next modules
      make[1]: Entering directory ‘/usr/src/linux-headers-4.9.0-326-antix.1-amd64-smp’

      /home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee/trx.c: In function ‘rtl88ee_rx_query_desc’:
/home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee/trx.c:447:12: error: ‘struct ieee80211_rx_status’ has no member named ‘bw’
      447 | rx_status->bw = RATE_INFO_BW_40;

/home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee/trx.c:450:12: error: ‘struct ieee80211_rx_status’ has no member named ‘encoding’
      450 | rx_status->encoding = RX_ENC_HT;

      450 | rx_status->encoding = RX_ENC_HT;
      | ^~~~~~~~~
/home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee/trx.c:450:25: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in
      make[3]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:308: /home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee/trx.o] Error 1
      make[2]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:558: /home/admin/rtlwifi-next/rtl8188ee] Error 2
      make[1]: *** [Makefile:1557: _module_/home/admin/rtlwifi-next] Error 2

      make: *** [Makefile:100: all] Error 2

As you can see, it threw up a lot of errors and it seems to have given up on the install.
I don’t know if I need to clean up and uninstall what it’s attempted, or if someone knows how to repair the script, or if I’m even barking up the wrong tree altogether?

      Thanks

Which exact antiX 22 version did you install? I hope it was full, or maybe base, because those have the best wifi support out of the box. You have plenty of room to install full. I think you can safely uninstall LibreOffice afterwards to save space if you like.

I see you didn’t provide the info requested in the threads above, and suggest you post at least the inxi info. It’s not easy helping people when you don’t know their exact situation. Compiling your own Wifi driver might be necessary, but that should be a last resort, and your 8gb could be a limiting factor on a development system, which is what you need to be compiling and developing.

It looks like firmware for the card is available in the firmware-realtek package, but it might not work with all kernels. I’d suggest trying it with the 4.19. kernel that probably came with your antiX, ie Legacy kernel, not Modern kernel.

In time the OP uses the 4.9 kernel
If this is the antiX22-full version, it comes with two kernels installed. Did you already try to boot into the 5.10. kernel? Might the newer kernel sees the card.
On the bootscreen there’s a line “advanced options”, you can choose the 5.10 kernel there.

Thanks for the replies. I installed the base version because I didn’t think I had the drive space for all the extra productivity apps that come pre installed with the Full version. I’ll paste the inxi result in a few minutes and look into which kernel version ended up getting installed once I’ve woken up a bit lol. I ended up sitting in front of that keyboard till 4am here trying to figure it out. I didn’t realise all the guides were getting me to roll my own drivers. I guess there’s not really such a thing as a precompiled driver on Linux systems due to the variety. Thanks for your help

I’ll install the full version, if you believe it will help. I did think that the correct drivers should be already in there, I just couldn’t figure out how to assign them to my WiFi card, so that AntiX would use them. I ended up chasing my tail and entering everything I could find online about getting WiFi working into my Terminal. It is helping me start to understand my way around a bit, but I have had to wipe everything and reinstall the system from my Live usb stick half a dozen times now. I’ll wait for further guidance before I do anything further though.
Edit: I checked my Live usb for any advanced options while I was waiting and it doesn’t seem to have any kernel version options. The installer version is AntiX-22 x64-base (19 October 2022)

Thanks for your help. I went ahead and used the AntiX 22 full x64 iso and switched the kernel to 5.10 in the Live usb advanced boot options. The WiFi worked straight away! I’ve now installed this version and doing the updates across wifi 🙂
I’m happy to close this now. Best wishes for the new year. Thank you

                    Hello 10Thumbs.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you to read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
                    How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You will not waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings. I recommend you try desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these workspaces has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources). zzzFM will be the default file manager on your desktop, it is very similar to other file managers in other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to request help or technical support in this forum, explain in detail what is happening, do not mince words, be thorough when writing, inform the characteristics of your computer, such as brand and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -zv7 from the terminal, copy and paste it here in the message of the topic you are going to create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

After you receive my welcome with the basic instructions that I recommend to all newcomers here in the antiX forum, now I can have some more tips and suggestions about your problem.

Full ISO installed on hard disk (or SSD) with ext4 file system consumes only 3.8GB of disk space and I recommend all newbies to start with full ISO.

If CMST ConnMan does not work with your wireless network card, Ceni may work. To switch between CMST ConnMan and Ceni, click the antiX menu, Applications, antiX WiFi Switcher, click the Ceni button to make it your default WiFi manager program. If, even so, Ceni cannot detect your wireless network card, you can change the default CMST ConnMan again by clicking on the button with its name.

When you post the output of the commands, remember to post the complete information, otherwise other people won’t be able to help you.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
                    How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.
