      “The setup seems to have used nala, which I have never used before.”

      nala is simply a python wrapper around the apt tool; the main package dependency is python3-apt, which brings in a few additional python3 packages; I do not see that this is the cause of any issues; it works fine for me.

          Thanks for the feedback, gentlepersons. It does give me something to chew on. I do hope this drive is OK.

          Backing up config files in their own folder before editing is an old habit I try to encourage in myself. If I can find the original, then I can find the 17 backups of various vintages. But, of course it is not the only way to do things.

          Regarding the “missing or non-executable shell” message, I notice that this line in my /etc/passwd

          >>
          $ grep -i /bin/nologin /etc/passwd
          s6log:x:998:997::/home/s6log:/bin/nologin
          <<

          There are 26 references to “/usr/sbin/nologin” in this file – perhaps there is a typo in the setup?
          Or perhaps this is just a way to make _really_ sure that nobody can log in as s6log.

          Thanks again. Going to do some Saturday stuff.

            /bin/nologin is a legitimate way to create an account, and in fact, a “log” account is an excellent “use case” for using /bin/nologin;
            in general, it is used for any account that provides services to a feature, but is NOT a user or privileged user account.
            It is a service account.

                All of the five init versions have been solid during the month of March. I’ve not run into any issues, and now that we’ve fine tuned a few of the scripts, it’s been even better.

                I think there is a solid future for this type of distribution. @Dave even updated the Date/Time tool so we can easily move between UTC and LOCAL time, a small matter that has been brought up in versions 23 and 23.1 that further solidify the interaction between this and other distribution instances. Looking good!
