Having difficulty with Alpha 1 adding or changing kernels, including our antiX 6.1.10.

      Hi @Brian,

This is how I do it.

In order to remove the rtl8821ce and exfat dkms kernel modules, you need to know the version that goes with it.

To get this information, in terminal type:
      dkms status

Based on your above printout, for rtl8821ce, it is version 5.5.2.1.

      Then in terminal type:
      sudo dkms remove rtl8821ce/5.5.2.1

Remove in a similar fashion the exfat kernel module.

Then you have to remove the source code.

What I do is in terminal, type sudo rox. This will get me rox-filer as root.
I go into the folder /usr/src and delete the rtl8821ce folder and the exfat folder.

Now you install the new 6.1 kernel.

      Hope this helps.

        I removed rtl8821ce-dkms and exfat-dkms with a single command – sudo apt purge rtl8821ce-dkms exfat-dkms.
I was then able to install our 6.1.10 kernel and I am using it now – problem solved!

@calciumsodium: is there a reason why the method I used is insufficient? Do you think anything is left behind? I even specified purge and that supposedly gets rid of everything associated with the packages included.

I do understand that the failure to remove the packages was my initial problem. I incorrectly thought I had performed that step previously. Now that it’s done things are working as expected.

              @anticapitalista
Please, could you update leafpad package? I noticed the bug I had warned about is still present in antiX 23 version of our default text editor. According to the bug report linked in my posting the issue was fixed very soon after reporting, but even antiX 23 leafpad still fails. Checking the version:

              $ LANG=C apt-cache policy leafpad
              leafpad:
                Installed: 0.8.18.1-5
                Candidate: 0.8.18.1-5
                Version table:
               *** 0.8.18.1-5 500
                      500 http://repo.antixlinux.com/testing testing/main amd64 Packages
                      100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

That’s the very same unfixed version as in antiX 21/22. Would be great if you could bestow the fixed version at least upon antiX 23. Many thanks!

@Robin – great work-spaces script- I was thinking about creating a similar one for FT10, so, even if it’s not used in antiX, I’ll probably borrow it for FT10 next release.
As for the name of the script: I’m also not a native English speaker, but I think it should be something like “WorkSpace’s Manager”.

Edit: There used to be a nice GUI to manage some of IceWM’s features – I’m proposing that antiX should have one (using the menu or the toolbar is way more complex than it should be, and some changes do not “stick”. I created a prefoverride file that allows me to manage stuff like: how the clock looks (show seconds, 12/24h, show date, use LCD numbers), what “squares with system info” are displayed, auto hiding the panel, placing the panel on the top, double height toolbar, using the windows+arrows’s keys to tile windows, etc. Some extra stuff, more esoteric, like showing the menu or the “show desktop” icon can be configured that way. A GUI for that would interesting for most users, I guess- similar to the toolbar manager I created for tint2, in my FT10 package… Do you think this would be useful, @anticapitalista?

                P.

@calciumsodium, many thanks for your assistance, default now ICEWM and happy here.
Network quieter and much less disk writes after switching off connman logging.

@anticapitalista, request that connman logging service is default off in future.

Desktop change from boot screen getting lost on personal remasters is not serious,
just sometimes annoying. Still hope for a set default option on boot screen.
Searching the forum then editing files is more than many new users will care to do.

(the two packages marked as „not updated” in the command output from apt are connman and iso-template-antix which are obviously recently hold back)

The updated leafpad (0.8.18.1) works fine on a most recently apt-upgraded antiX 22 (kernel 5.10.142-antix.2-amd64-smp), and the nasty bug in search function has gone. I don’t see any issues. Also translation (to de) is perfect.
Unfortunately my antiX 22 installation is not elogind-free right now, since I had to install kdenlive for some video editing tasks, which drew it in. So I can’t tell whether same testing results go for elogind free antiX.

UPDATE: have rechecked now after purging libelogind0, and the new leafpad installed from your package still works fine. So it is OK for completely non-systemd & non-elongind antiX systems also.

Have a headeache, badly need some help.

In both antiXp23 Alpha and previous antiX version 22 a very detailed logfiles are
created in desktop session home folder.
While useful at present for debugging the files get quite large and are pretty
certainly too revealing to get past scrutiny in a hoped for usage in an environment
where multi users are involved and data protection laws come in to play.

/home/demo/.desktop-session/current.log and backups in same folder.

I have searched for a way to turn the logging off, here in forum and on running setup,
                        including in /usr/local/bin scripts.
Maybe/most likely I missed or misunderstood, something, I am not a capable coder and do
not know the ins and outs of antix really well.

Experts: Please point me to where I can stop/switch off the logfile creation.

Interim report antiX 23 (6.1.10-antix.1-amd64-smp kernel):

Works stable, have run it with an uptime of 7 days. No memory leakage, no crashes, no other issues.

Installed now in this alpha release mostly all what I have installed by default on antiX, and all of it works out of the box on antiX 23. No stability issues, no crashes. Many of the programs are noticibly improved:

The following packages drew in elogind again:
                          — fluidsynth (this one was present in a de-eloginded version on antiX 21/22 already)
                          — poedit
                          — kdenlive

When trying to purge libelogind0 these programs will get removed from system, which is a pity.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

After further system searching, Regarding logging, seems to me that

                            /usr/local/lib/desktop-session/lib-logging-ds

is the executing desktop logging code,
Big question how can I turn off execution without risking nasty side
                            effects.

                              @robin, thanks for your info,
I have a different setup software wise, Nvidia card but at present running noveau as driver,
Noveau is still not as good as the Nvidia drivers for my GK208B [GeForce GT 710]card but
much improved. To further test I will soon need to do an install and setup NVidia propriety driver.
Bothersome on this modernized machine. Will have to add a dedicated drive and pull the PCI NVME
                              adapter.

Using 23 live as daily driver. Higher memory usage than older versions, no sign of memory leaks.
                              Stable, excellent performance.

The increase in memory usage after start seems to be driven by kernel processes, noticeabe is networking,
negotiation with router, time updates. Connman logging disabled, recommend as default.
Logfiles in desktop session getting quite large, contain more info than I am comfortable with.
                              Working on a solution.

Latest libreoffice is not yet available from repos. Still in unstable so should be available soon.
Had update issue with vivaldi, outdated key. Solution install with a deb directly downloaded from
                              vivaldi site.

LibreWolf and Ungoogled Chromium run fine as expected.
Now using latest ungoogled, Version 110.0.5481.100 which has been available since 17.02.2023.

Printers not yet setup, hope a brother device will work without need for sysd component.
An Epson Multi device prints fine, Scanning not yet, sane says supported so should work in the
end. Samsung laser will need a PPD.

Sound fine, no bluetooth devices though. My Koss Headphones are wired.

Enjoying the antiX experience, have to repeat, for an alpha release extremely impressive.
                              Many thanks to all involved.

Added redirect to nirvana for logfile to /home/demo/.desktop-session/startup

Removed code, bad idea, breaks more than it fixed.

Dunce, goes back to the corner… 🙂

                                  @Xunzi_23 re desktop-session logging.
                                  Please see here. https://gitlab.com/antiX-Dave/desktop-session-antix/-/commit/8f4072f8e1cbf8eebc7c7ef31e4bfc6165991e32
Not sure if it is added already to antiX but can be tested by replacing lib-logging-ds with the one in my gitlab, then adding the logging level to ~/.desktop-session.conf

Maybe check ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf for a logging level option and add it before changing lib-logging-ds. As it seems the code is in the antiX-Linux gitlab. https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/desktop-session-antix/-/blob/master/desktop-session-lib/lib-logging-ds
