Dear Developers,

I have done 2 installations in English_US on my SD card on my Dell Latitude.

Everything works fine but I have some remarks.

Look at the screenshot of Gparted. I created an extended partition.

1) The last LINUXDATA partition is formatted in FAT32. During the installation, antiX put a line in the fstab file for this partition. I have not changed anything in this line. If I open zzzfm, I can create a file on the LINUXDATA partition. Everything is perfect!

2) If I format the last LINUXDATA partition as exFAT, it doesn’t work anymore. During installation, antiX also puts a line in the fstab file. Using zzzfm, I don’t have the rights to write to the LINUXDATA partition. I don’t know if this can be improved. Even if I change the line in fstab to auto-mount, I can’t create a file on this exFAT partition.

3) During the installation, when you have to choose the partitions, antiX sees that it is an SD card. In the fstab options, it defaults to the “discard” option. Normally, one should not use the TRIM function on an SD card. Maybe I’m wrong!

4) My SD card is really fast, I did the installation in 35 seconds, it’s really surprising! But the startup is slow! This is when I have on the screen, a line “Loading initial ramdisk …”. That’s when the PC is waiting, waiting, waiting… we don’t know what? In the dmesg log, I don’t have any strange line that allows me to understand this delay. Can this be improved with the use of an SD card? I assume not, that it comes from Debian.

5) In the fstab, for the swap partition, why not put in the last two columns (DUMP and fsck), the options 0 0 instead of 0 2? Is it necessary to check the swap?

@Wallon – PPC is correct. The reason why yad-updater isn’t working in French is because of errors in the translation.
Not the words you use, but use of << and >>. See the warning message at transifex.
All other languages I tested work ok.

Many thanks for the explanations.

If we could have a list of allowed or forbidden characters, it would be easier for all translators. We could avoid some bugs.
I will change the translation in Transifex right away and use the US quotes.
Please look at the Transifex screenshot, there is no warning for these 2 buttons that have been translated with chevron quotes.
If you are working with LibreOffice in French, the quotes are automatically set to a chevron quotes. It is also the same for Microsoft Word in French.

Even though PPC doesn’t like me, I recognise its great value for all that it brings to the community. I am deeply grateful to him.

Wallon, as we translate “blindly”, without being allowed to test the translation we make, what happened to your translation or mine will always happen (unfortunately).

Your second picture “antiX_Updater-1.jpg” from the “yad-update”, the sentence starts at entry 14 ” There’s at least “, the number “5” expresses the amount of packages that will be updated, it could be “1 ” package. In your photo it displayed “5”, this “5” is a variable that does not appear in the texts of entries 14 or 15. This variable was not included in the text, which means that we will not be able to position it properly in the translated sentence (I don’t want nor see how this will look in Arabic, oriental languages, etc.). The remainder of the sentence continues at entry 15 ” available update(s) \n \n ‘Automatic’ Update – usually it’s completely unattended. and normally safe, since it always makes the default choices for you \n (Pressing the Enter key now will select the Automatic mode) \n ‘Manual’ Update – gives you full control of the update process, but may require you to make some choices \n”.

Today I was able to adjust the texts of entries 3, 10, 14 and 15 in Transifex. As these sentences have texts with different sizes, the number of characters is not used as a measure to define where to include the line break “\n”. Please see how I adjusted the line breaks for the “pt_BR” language, it might help you. The plural of the text, I had to put it in parentheses, is what I managed to do to minimize the impossibility of manipulating the variable in the sentence.

Hoje eu consegui ajustar no Transifex os textos das entradas 3, 10, 14 e 15. Como estas frases possuem textos com tamanhos diferentes, a quantidade de caracteres não serve como forma de medida para definir onde incluir a quebra de linha “\n”. Por favor, olhe como eu ajustei as quebras de linhas do idioma “pt_BR”, pode ser que sirva de ajuda para você. O plural do texto, eu tive que colocar entre parenteses, é o que eu consegui fazer para minimizar a impossibilidade de manipular a variável na frase.

This has to be done in the “.pot” file, including “#. include the comment here” before the “#:” and then the “.pot” file must be sent to Transifex.

In Transifex Contribs there are several examples of how to include comments in the “.pot” file, the comments can also be seen in the “.po” files. Comments serve to guide translators on what they can and cannot do in their translation.

Wallon, your quotation marks are the same used by Robin.

As long as there is no logical working methodology in the antiX community, we will always suffer from rework and a total waste of time. Whether it’s a waste of time for developers/programmers or translators reworking what has already been done.

Suggestion of a logical methodology of volunteer work:

1 – The program is created.
2 – The program must be tested.
3 – After the tests are successfully performed, the program receives the translation resources.
4 – Make the program available with the translation resources for the active forum translators to help with the tests.
5 – The program must be tested with the translation resources in at least 2 (two) languages different from the original language of the program.
6 – After the tests are successfully performed with the translation resources, the “.pot” file can receive the comments to instruct the translators.
7 – The “.pot” file can be sent to Transifex.

Isso tem que ser feito no arquivo “.pot”, incluindo “#. inclua o comentário aqui” antes de “#:” e depois deve ser enviado o arquivo “.pot” para o Transifex.

7 – O arquivo “.pot” pode ser enviado para o Transifex.

Alguém teria outras sugestões de como podemos criar uma metodologia lógica de trabalho voluntário na comunidade antiX?

I had noticed that also on my screenshot, it is not possible to control the variable of one or more updates.
I’ve changed the whole translation into French so that it’s understandable.

Also, the control of parentheses is absurd in Transifex. In English, we have for example “upgrade(s) available” and in French, we have “mise(s) à jour disponible(s)”. You will always have one pair of parentheses in English and two pairs of parentheses in Latin languages.

Furthermore, Transifex does not give any warning about the programming language used and the forbidden characters.

I don’t have a small screen (720p) to check if the window is too big!
I’ll look at your translation.

I’m not here in the forum to make friends (but I did make a couple of them). What I did not like was the fact that you almost demanded that the original english text of a script should be changed, it seems, before even testing it. I did not like that you “were shocked” by what I said, assuming, wrongly that I was complaining about the fact that the fr translation used special accentened characters.
I don’t generally like people making assumptions about me or my work, and that happens, from time to time, here in the forum- I strive for antiX to be 100% localized, not only in my own language, but in as many languages as possible. We are all on the same time here, there’s no secret “lets make this work in all languages except that particular one” plot. That would be stupid. Even countries that the West considers non friendly are supported here. I think that’s not the kind of “politics” that anticapitalista tries to implement.

What I do like about you it that you are part of the localization team, and so, a part of antiX development. Like I said in my previous post- I value greatly our translation team.

Note: just to make it clear- I’m not an antiX Developer, just a simple user that contributes with some scripts, UI and UX suggestions, and localization. I carry as much height here as any user.

I did a frugal install with full persistence of the “antiX-23-beta1-runit_x64-full.iso” ISO, set the clock and was pleased to see the “antiX Updater” program with the initial translation I made into the language “pt_BR”.

I clicked on the “Automatic Update” button and at the end of the process I got the message that an error occurred during the update and that I should open another Terminal window and apply the command “sudo apt -f install”. I performed this procedure, but the error persisted.

Eu fiz uma instalação frugal com persistência total da ISO “antiX-23-beta1-runit_x64-full.iso”, ajustei o relógio e tive o prazer de ver o programa “Atualizador do antiX” com a tradução incial que eu fiz para o idioma “pt_BR”.

Eu cliquei no botão “Atualização Automática” e no final do processo eu recebi a mensagem que ocorreu um erro durante a atualização e que eu deveria abrir uma outra janela do Terminal e aplicar o comando “sudo apt -f install”. Eu realizei este procedimento, mas o erro continuou.

What I tried to do after the error message:

I tried to use the program “antiX autoremove” which is duly translated and adapted to my language by “Automatic cleaning of antiX”. The program opened the step of the “sudo apt update” command similar to the window that is displayed in the program “Updator do antiX”. The terminal window did not appear, asking whether or not I wanted to automatically remove packages that antiX no longer needed.

I applied “sudo apt autoremove” command and got:

As there are no other guidelines in the texts of the “antiX Updater” program, the next step should be to carry out the “Manual Update”.

The same error I posted above occurred.

I believe that other information could be included on what can be done for the problem to be solved when the window that guides to post in the forum is displayed to the user.

O que eu tentei fazer após a mensagem de erro:

Eu tentei utilizar o programa “antiX autoremove” que está devidamente traduzido e adaptado para o meu idioma por “Limpeza Automática do antiX”. O programa abriu fez a etapa do comando “sudo apt update” semelhante a janela que é exibida no programa “Atualizador do antiX”. A janela do terminal não foi exibida, perguntando se eu queria ou não fazer a remoção automática dos pacotes que se tornaram desnecessários ao antiX.

Eu apliquei o comando “sudo apt autoremove” e obtive:

Dear Marcelo (and all): one of the reasons antiX-Updater always shows the terminal, even in the “Automatic Mode” is so users have an easy way to see what the system is doing and also reading the reason for any error. The generic message to try to fix the installation, of course can’t solve lack of hard drive space.
Maybe create a bigger frugal install? Sorry, it’s been years, since I last used a frugal install, can’t really offer any help on that.

I’m please to see that your revised localization works perfectly 🙂

The GUI does the same terminal commands as updating via the terminal – if the GUI said you had no space, trying the terminal gets you the same exact result.

autoremove only removes packages that were leftover after upgrades, uninstalls. On a recent system, like antiX23b1, it won’t probably do much…

As far as cleaning up cache, packages, and archives, periodically I do ALL three of these commands”

sudo apt clean
sudo apt autoclean
sudo apt autoremove

As far as the third command, I routinely do that one as part of my daily regimen.

alias ug=’sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade’
alias ur=’sudo apt-get autoremove’
~/bin/update-grub

cat bin/update-grub
#!/bin/bash

sudo update-grub

So here’s a common sequence for me, which cuts down a bit on typing:

ug;ur;bin/update-grub

It runs sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, followed by
sudo apt-get autoremove and finally sudo update-grub.

Sometimes I’ll use our handy yad scripts, but these are simple, so MOST
of the time, I simply recall this from my bash command history:
ug;ur;bin/update-grub

and I’m done. By the way, this works on ALL of my Debian-based systems
I use it several times a day.

If cleaning cache and simple updates are not enough,
perhaps what PPC suggested is true – the size and space
of your media and image are too tight for what you
are attempting to use. Examine the size of the media
and partition you have available and compare it to
the total size of what you are installing; you’ll
undoubtedly see that they are of similar size.

I used to use 4G, then 8 G, then 16… 32, 64
and I now have mostly 64G and 128G sticks for my
USB experiments, plenty of space. I hope there
are reasonably priced removable media in your area.
They’re very reasonable here, but I’ll often look
for either a “deal” or a “sale”; that allows me
to get something of higher capacity or a multiple
number of devices. Patience and awareness helps
me to get what I need without over extending my
personal budget.

Yes, I just checked some prices and there are several 64 GB
USB devices available for under $10 US for a single device;
I saw 2 for $12.74 US at Amazon.com. WalMart, Amazon.com
and NewEgg all have several options.

Even some of the newest USB 3.0 drives are reasonably priced,
but if it’s too expensive in your area, the 32G drives
are extremely inexpensive, though in my region, the 64G
seem to be the best deal at a moderate price; only the high
end, high performance ones cost a bit more.

Taking the leap to 128G here isn’t much of a leap either
unless you get the top of the line highest quality unit.
Surprisingly the average unit is just over $10 but a few
discount units even in this size are starting to drop
under $10 US. I sincerely hope these deals are available
elsewhere too!
