Following the browsers through to actually running them, Google Chrome and Vivaldi DO install AND run; I’m using Chrome now, installed from the Package Installer and I’m still running live on the old HP s5747c desktop.
This has been a good system to experiment with; I’ve verified both the legacy and the new kernel and I’ve now tried four different Web browsers plus the one that came pre installed, so if you count that as five browsers, three of the five work; the two Waterfox instances mentioned earlier have been the only test failures I’ve found this week in my personal use case testing.

Still on the HP s5747c desktop, I have uninstalled Google Chrome and Vivaldi and successfully installed the Brave Web Browser. Today, ALL of the work on this HP is from the Live USB, but I HAVE performed an update prior to running these tests; I have not created any persistence, so I can use this media to test again on other platforms or again on this system.
This note is written from Brave; I’m going to TEST what I run, that will be a better test than simply clicking install and remove. I will revisit the Waterfox matters I found to see if these appear on the INSTALLED instances on either the HP-14 laptop or the Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop. I can run EITHER live OR installed on either, since I have physically installed the Beta 1 image on each of those systems.

Two more Web browsers installed, Falcon and Otter; writing from Falcon, I’ll check Otter, report back, and that will be it today for me.
By the way, I had problems installing Slimjet. This browser definitely is active and it works, but our package installer has to be fixed
because something changed and Slimjet installation hangs. There is a recent version; I’ve used it on my regular system in the past week.--

Solved the issue with Slimjet: dependencies:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
slimjet : Depends: fonts-liberation but it is not installed
Depends: libu2f-udev but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try ‘apt –fix-broken install’ with no packages (or specify a solution).
root@antix1:/home/demo# apt install fonts-liberation libu2f-udev slimjetOnce I did this, slimjet works fine and I’m here using the Slimjet browser.

I was curious why the change in startup service in beta1:

getty-ttyS0I don’t see any negative performances in beta1 compared to alpha1. In my testing so far, beta1 seems to have better performance than alpha, especially in older machines.
I suppose removing these services does simplify the startup if there are no negative side effects. It is a shorter list of startup services now compared to a longer list in runit service manager.Brian Masinick
getty-* are processes for console terminals, I’ve seen as many as 7-8 in some situations and as few as 1-3; you are free to configure these. The Runit Service Manager can be used to add or remove services as you may know.
Personally I think fewer getty processes is a good choice and I often reduce them myself.

I installed antiX 23 Beta 1 on the HP s5747c desktop where I was testing yesterday.
I’m finding the same scenarios on the installed instance here; Waterfox images are not working properly and I’ve not yet deduced the reason why. Slimjet wasn’t installing but I did determine that it was missing fonts-liberation and libu2f-udev. If these are installed, then Slimjet works.Today I noticed that while the antiX workspace manager allows you to quickly change the number, and optionally the names of the workspaces, by default these changes are NOT saved. I attempted to use Settings – Preferences – Save Modifications; I did not see the file preferences updated by this change, so I changed the workspace names and values myself in preferences and it works. I would like to see a feature to have those changes be saved if requested; otherwise the antiX workspace manager only performs temporary changes that are lost when you change window managers, logout or restart the window manager.
I located this defect or omission while examining the basics of each window manager; they all install; this was the first quirk I detected regarding window managers.
Overall impressions are still very positive and I’ve been happy with the performance on this 13 year old desktop; without antiX there are not very many distributions that run very well here; I replaced Windows on here when I acquired the system; it was so sluggish it appeared not to work at all but the first time I installed antiX it brought it back to life. Happily, antiX 23 Beta 1, even with the minor defects, is running very well here!

I’ve invoked IceWM, Fluxbox, JWM and herbstluftwm and all work. I’ve not tried all of the file managers with it; I’ve been using zzzFM.

What I know about this service is: you need it started to be able to use the serial port, so when running on older hardware even the serial mouse won’t work with this service not being configured. Also serial printers and plotters will probably refuse to work. But maybe these devices and the serial port services are invoked in another way on a runit system now?

Please could somebody who has respective hardware at hand check out whether the serial port is working in antiX 23 beta still? (Unfortunately I didn’t make it by now to switch my testing environment from alpha to beta, will do so next days, so I can’t check right now)

Yes, in my beta1 system,

still? If the serial port still works on beta, maybe the getty thing is only needed to provide login services for connecting prehistoric terminals or modems for remote login to the serial port. In this case It’s no loss, literally nobody would use this (and if so, he would probably know how to activate the service when needed.)Windows is like a submarine.
