::I’ll check out (in live mode):
-Newsreader
-Torrentand report back…
Newsreader: I can install, remove and uninstall both entries, the apps seem to work perfectly
Torrent: the latest qBitorrent fails to install, terminal pops up for a second only, can’t read it’s output. The other entries install, uninstall, reinstall and seem to work just fine- note: I tried to remove the 2 preinstalled bittorrent clients- it seems to work, but the apps are not removed…I also checked out Media Converter – the entries there seems to install, uninstall an reinstall and work perfectly.
So currently it seems that this categories were not checked out yet and have no one currently checking them out:
Language (Probably not necessary to test every package)
Network
Remote Access
Screencast
Server

UPDATE: Results.After installing “Obsidian-2 Gtk Theme, a dark Gtk theme” package installer chokes with an undefined state, coming up with a window without any buttons or useful content.

It even doesn’t provide handles to close it in its upper window border, and the presented name is not translated, but reads “packageinstaller”, one word, in English language. It shows not just blank content, but keeps arbitrary artefacts of windows that run in stay on top mode above it.

This window wouldn’t even obey to “Alt-F4” key, or “Close” entry from context menu of its handle in taskbar. Had to kill the process on command line using sudo kill -9 to get rid of it.
$ htop PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU% MEM%▽ TIME+ Command 2724961 root 20 0 913M 98M 77172 S 0.0 1.2 0:06.12 packageinstaller 2724682 Robin 30 10 255M 28764 20168 S 0.0 0.4 0:03.44 gksu -u root packageinstaller 2724689 root 20 0 79008 4516 4048 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.06 /usr/bin/sudo -H -S -p GNOME_SUDO_PASS -u root -- packageinstaller 2724678 Robin 20 0 76944 3420 3132 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 /bin/bash /usr/bin/su-to-root -X -c packageinstallerWhatever problem the window wanted to report, I couldn’t find out. No further information available, due to the fact the terminal window in which the actual installation process has been run by packageinstaller had closed itself that fast after completing I couldn’t read its output.
Apt history shows package was installed nevertheless:
$cat /var/log/apt/history.log Start-Date: 2023-03-13 12:55:01 Commandline: apt-get install --reinstall obsidian-2-gtk-theme Requested-By: Robin (1001) Install: obsidian-2-gtk-theme:amd64 (2.3.1-1mx17+1) End-Date: 2023-03-13 12:55:01Also on console apt reports the theme being installed:
$ apt-cache policy obsidian-2-gtk-theme obsidian-2-gtk-theme: Installiert: 2.3.1-1mx17+1 Installationskandidat: 2.3.1-1mx17+1 Versionstabelle: *** 2.3.1-1mx17+1 500 500 http://repo.antixlinux.com/testing testing/main amd64 Packages 500 http://repo.antixlinux.com/testing testing/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/statusWhen checking whether the installed theme works, it comes up fine. Didn’t notice any issues.
The behaviour is reproducable. After uninstalling the package, when installing it again the same issue shows up. While when running the install command from console manually it doesn’t fail, returning exit code 0.
$ sudo apt-get install obsidian-2-gtk-theme Paketlisten werden gelesen… $ echo $? 0So it is not clear to me what kind of issue packageinstaller senses here and wants to report.
Another issue with packageinstaller is: It obviously doesn’t obey theming:
While all the other recently opened windows changed their design properly, and other freshly opened windows make use of the new theme also, packageinstaller itself doesn’t, even not after closing and reopening this tool.Besides these issues: All other packages from the two categories themes and wallpapers install, reinstall, work, and uninstall fine from packageinstaller.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

::Additional remark:
The new themes installed from package manager show up properly in antiX control center → Surface → Change Appearance. But I just found out, they are not available in antiX main menu → settings → themes. Possibly package installer should run the refresh menu script to make them appear?Windows is like a submarine. ::they are not available in antiX main menu → settings → themes.
@Robin, this is because the themes in Package Installer are kind of window decoration themes, but the themes in menu > preferences are icewm themes.
You said you didn’t make use of Package Installer until now. I think anyone who uses it regularly has seen the behaviour you describe with your screenshots at least once (also on antiX21).
Strangely, I cannot reproduce it here by installing Obsidian-2 Gtk Theme.But I had a similar behaviour yesterday with another package, can’t remember what it was.Normally, if you give Package Installer enough time it recovers and you can close the windows.March 13, 2023 at 2:57 pm #101925MemberPPC
::I checked out (only install and check if app launches):
–Utility – everything works, except Idevice Mounter, that fails to install
-Language – partly tested – I tried to install PT localizations for all available entries on the Language Categories (I installed LibreOffice full only). Firefox-esr got correctly localized; LibreOffice was updated and came up localized; Thunderbird got installed, fully localized; firefox (non ESR) localization came up as installed. Firefox itself did not install (but Thunderbird did). I tried installing Firefox on the Browser’s tab, it failed to install from there too.P.

::I also checked out:
Server– The single available package in this category failed to install (the terminal blinked in and out)
Screencast – all 3 entries installed and ran and were uninstalled (OBS complained it could not run with my GPU- it does the same in antiX 22-, the other 2 ran just fine, recorded my desktop).P.

::I’ll take Window Managers and Wallpapers too.
Testing complete. All Wallpapers installed were verified present. Uninstalled successfully too.
The fvwm-crystal window manager was installed and tested; it works fine. Uninstalled successfully.
It’s necessary to do sudo apt autoremove to completely remove the packages that install along with fvwm-crystal.
Otherwise everything works perfectly.--

::In the Network category, I have a few of the packages already greyed out; I may look into a few of them.
One package that I am very familiar with and I’ve used for many years in the past is wicd; this should be removed because it is no longer in the enabled repositories, and we have Ceni plus Connman, both of which are capable, efficient window managers.--

AirVPN
Blueman
Ceni
Droopy

uninstall and install correctly in the Network category.ExpressVPN
Megasync
do not install, nor are they marked after attempted installation
Mullvad VPN also does not install, though it brings up a list of packages to install and then failsMore later…

::I just checked out:
-Remote Access – all entries installed, ran and got uninstalled (I did not try to connect anywhere, I just checked if the apps ran. I did not try to uninstall)
-Network- I partly tested this category:
AirVPN-Eddie (the binary is called Eddie) complained about “unabled to obtain elevated privileges”, even if if I tried to run it with sudo
Droopy and Dropbox installed and launched (Dropbox installed dropbox at first run, but I have no account to test it)
Network-Samba: failed to install- the terminal blinked on and off once. Also, I think this entry was missenamed- shouldn’t it be just “Samba”? Network-samba may confuse users…
This were the only tests I did on the Network category.P.

Sorry, I’m done testing for today, Mr Masinick… but there are only some entries left in “Network”…

I’m done for today too. The Network category definitely needs considerable attention. I had virtually no success with the VPN-related packages. The ones I had good success with were our current network management options, but note that one old network manager, wicd, should be removed from our list; I’m pretty sure it’s no longer maintained, even though it was a very good tool in the past.
At least we’re getting pretty decent community testing; hope the trend continues. Next time I test, hopefully as a community we have most categories covered.
