I have installed the 2 packages suggested by other Linux Distros: usbmuxd and libimobile but AntiX doesn’t “see” the iPhone. Is it not possible, or am I missing some other files?

::Using window mangers makes Iphone handling a bit more challenging.
No mention of Iphone model being used or OS.
So not much to go on here.My posts from way back when I used a Iphone.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsDecember 12, 2018 at 9:03 am #14189Memberspot
::Thank you for your reply.
I am able to work in Terminal.
The iPhone is a 4s.
The OS is AntiX Helen Keller.
What I notice is that like Puppy Linux, and maybe others, AntiX is missing resources (in the kernel?) that let a distro like Mint and even MX Linux make my iPhone
a working USB hot spot.I enjoy the use of AntiX for it’s inclusive policy toward old computers. But because I’m borrowing internet access via wifi, I have to remove AntiX from this old laptop
and either return to using a Windows version, or try another distro that has the “stuff” to let me use my iPhone as a USB hot spot.December 12, 2018 at 11:09 am #14191Anonymous
::The issue may due to absence of “jfs filesystem support”. The jfsutils package is not preinstalled in antiX… and I’ve read here in the forum that “due to popular request” it will be present in the future antiX release?
https://wiki.debian.org/iPhone
Also, for spacefm filemanager, IIRC, jfs is not among the filesystems recognized per default settings. After installing jfsutils, still need to visit spacefm preferences and add jfs to the comma-separated list of detected filesystems.

::Can’t help you much, because no iphone here, but you say mx works for thetering. This, besides libimobiledevice6 and usbmuxd is installed on mx by default for iphone support, but not on antiX.
ideviceinstaller
ifuse
libplist3
libimobiledevice-utils
python-imobiledevice
python-plistAlso maybe helpfull

::I am the poster of the problem of using my old iPhone tethered by USB for internet access in 2018. I am now using AntiX 19, and I went to the deoimedo-referenced site just now. The trick, it seems, is to open Terminal and type ” sudo usbmuxd -f -v” (no quotes). Then I disconnected and re-connected my iPhone 4s (yeah, I know, old), and it worked. This came after I was sure I had all the packages installed that were recommended: libimobiledevice, ideviceinstaller, usbmuxd, etc. using Synaptic.

::It’s a little kludgy because I have to connect the same way at every boot-up. Still, being dependent on my phone for internet connectivity, it’s great that it works. I will also do the same to the AntiX I originally tried to use last year. I have to know…..

Ah now that’s what I meant about having trouble with connecting the iphone on linux. My wife is running Ubuntu and we have to do the same for her phone
If she connects the phone to her computer she cannot access the files on the phone
she must reboot and then, and only then, will the phone seek confirmation that the computer is trusted.
I have never successfully found a way to make the process easier
please, if you solve your problem and find an easier way let me know as your solution may help me- This reply was modified 3 years, 5 months ago by nugget.

I’m not savvy enough to have that answer, but if I research it enough I’ll discover and implement an answer from somewhere.
Other Distros like Mint have auto-connect. We need to discover the script they use and plug it in to AntX to see if that would work.

::I tried using usbmuxd -f -v in puppy linux today after installing all the required support files. I type that in terminal, open the internet connection wizard, choose the iphone (eth1). A window pops open telling me to connect to the camera. Then I get to use the hot spot. This may be inherent in certain kernel compilations/linux versions. Just FYI.
A little more kludgy, but still usable.

::Just been looking further into it but as far as I can tell
theres nothing I can find I havent already tried.
I’m beginning to suspect the problem is at the phone end
of things rather than the linux end.---------------------

I’m beginning to suspect the problem is at the phone end
of things rather than the linux end.I think it’s the compilation of the kernel or the version(?), because Linux Mint handles the phone thing correctly after the needed packages are installed. I think MX Linux does it right too. I’m willing to live with manually starting up the connection to my iphone hotspot in AntiX and Puppy because it’s not a hassle really. And I like both the distros enough to go through it.
