I’m running an installed instance of antiX-Bullseye-B1 again today. Yesterday before I stopped, I was having difficulty getting the package installer to run, so just to be safe, I took the repos that I had been successfully using with antiX-Bullseye-A2, copied them to my B2 instance and ran sudo apt update;sudo apt full-upgrade again. Then I was able to successfully use the package installer today.

Is this the original release or the rebuild (for sysvinit) that includes the sources list fix?

I’m using the Bullseye repo for antiX and I’m running from the Live USB instance, also with the antiX Bullseye repo enabled.
When I turned it on initially, this repo was not automatically checked, so I enabled it in synaptic (equivalent to uncommenting the entry).
        Now everything works as expected.

I may have grabbed my instance before the repo was correctly enabled in the ISO image; in any case, manually enabling:

deb http://mirrors.rit.edu/mxlinux/mx-packages/antix/bullseye/ bullseye nonfree nosystemd main

        Works perfectly.

This inxi reports usage with the 5.10.27-antix.1-amd64-smp kernel. I used both kernels and tried out Fluxbox, IceWM and JWM and I also tried out SpaceFM and Rox with at least two of the window managers.

Package Manager successfully installed software in several categories; no issues encountered during today’s testing of either the installed or Live instances.

I also tried an unconventional test, enabling both Bullseye and Testing repos in a separate test; this did not introduce any other weird conditions; I returned to enabling only Bullseye, ran a clean test again and the previous scenarios that worked prior to this odd test once again worked as expected.

Installed and Live instances work for all software that I tested. I did not evaluate every single package but I did exercise the typical tools that I use and each of them worked as expected.

            As a side-effect of the https://wiki.debian.org/UsrMerge,
some of the “dpkg” (dpkg-query) command options are bugged. For instance:

            $locate antixcc.sh
            /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh
            $dpkg -S /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh
dpkg-query: no path found matching /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh

Although installation of the (tiny, 53kb) package “usrmerge” does solve the issue
(and yes the change is permanent ~~ you can immediately “apt purge usermerge”)…
            https://salsa.debian.org/md/usrmerge/raw/master/debian/README.Debian
…IMO, this detail should not be left to the end-user. From the outset, all users should have the same baseline.

After reading the usrmerge source package TODO, and debian/usrmerge.postinst, and scripts…
            https://sources.debian.org/src/usrmerge/25/
I’m unsure whether the full set of merges will be desirable for antiX. Someone needs to decide: should usrmerge be incorporated into the build-iso process, or just a subset of the changes it would perform?

If build-iso does not fully implement the usrmerge changes, we may bump into difficulty when attempting to backport packages (e.g. upstream presumes “/usr/libx32/” exists on the target system).

What has changed in this release compared to the previous (in the sysvinit one)

              Removed:

qt5ct – you will have to use a different tool to manage qt5 themes and configuration

a different tool? (I’m unaware of any comparable tool)

qt5ct brings no additional dependencies and is < 1MB (861kb).
IMO its inclusion, installed and preconfigured, represents an important curation detail.
Alternatively, in its absence, a thorough (and accessible/localized) HOWTO for installing//configuring it is warranted.

              Consider:
In the absence of a curated qt5ct config, we’re resigned to having non-ideal, non-antialiased, font rendering throughout the various MX -originated programs.

I think it may be a mistake. In the list I compiled previously, abcde is included in runit but not in sysvinit ISOs, so I think removing qt5ct was also a mistake, brought by the large changes in the Build-ISO project.

Thanks for pointing out a solution. How does this work? Do I run it after installing it or is just installing enough (as post install instructions or something)?

                  Sorry for the off-topic.

                  `$dpkg -S /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh
dpkg-query: no path found matching /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh`

Does dpkg -S no longer support full paths? I checked on antiX 19.X and the bullseye alpha to run
                  dpkg -S /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192sefw.bin
after installing usrmerge in 21a2 (I know it is not related), but dpkg can get the correct package on antiX 19.X but NOT on the bullseye release.
                  Any idea why?
Searching for just the file name does work on both (but I am used to searching the full path).
                  dpkg -S rtl8192sefw.bin

                    How does this work?

a postinst script within the package performs the change, silently, immediately (and permanently, unless running live and you throwaway persistence)

sudo apt install usrmerge && sudo apt purge usrmerge

Does dpkg -S no longer support full paths?

The example I presented lacked context. Immediately after the “no path found” result, I installed usrmerge & retried the identical “dpkg -S /usr/local/bin/antixcc.sh” command and it succeeded.

In a previous post, I had mentioned that I could not boot the b1-runit OS (with either the 4.9.0-264 nor the 5.10.27 kernel) on a hp 6730b core 2 computer in normal boot. The safe video and failsafe boot modes produced suboptimal graphics. However, the b1-sysvinit OS, for both the 4.9.0-264 and the 5.10.27 kernels, was able to boot up in this system in normal boot mode and produced optimal graphics. This computer was manufactored in 2008, 13 years old.

I then went to a little bit newer model, hp 6550 core i3, manufactored in 2010, 11 years old.

I was able to successfully do a normal boot (quiet splasht disable=lxF) of the b1-runit OS on this hp 6550 core i3. Both the 4.9.0-264 and the 5.10.27 kernels work. It may be that one needs at least an core i3 processor for the b1-runit to boot in normal mode.

I then did an install bare metal of the b1-runit with the 5.10.27 kernel on this hp 6550b core i3 laptop.

I then installed the same programs that I had installed on the b1-sysvinit system bare metal system to compare. I ran each of them and they all work well:

Kodi 19, wine, links2, netsurf, pale moon, seamonkey, smtube, vlc, ytfzf, mpv, mps-youtube, dosbox, pmrp, pulseaudio, pavucontrol

Both the b1-runit and the b1-sysvinit installed bare metal systems work very well with the programs that I use on an almost daily basis.

One note of concern regarding the installed bare metal systems of both b1-runit and b1-sysvinit:
Several times after boot, connman registered failure to automatically connect to my saved wireless network. So I had to manually connect to the network in connman. The wireless systems in both these hp 6730b and 6550b computers work very well with antix 19. I never had any problems automatically connecting to the router in antix 19. How often is this problem? The first 3 times I booted into either system, connman registered failure to automatically connect to my saved wireless network. The fourth time, it automatically connected.

I think it may be a mistake. In the list I compiled previously…

Although I quoted your post, I was working from my own “sort -u | comm” generated lists.
On the sysv version of the bullseye beta, qt5ct is indeed absent

@calciumsodium: I’m glad to see upon testing with various combinations that you’ve had better success with both the runit and sysvinit images.

I was testing the b1 sysvinit image and then I went back to one of my installed instances – I have an a2 runit instance and a b1 sysvinit instance.

When I check out the installed instances, I discovered that though one of them started with a2 and the other with b1, the only practical differences were:
                          1) the name of the starting image and
                          2) the init style, runit or sysvinit.

Installed and updated, except for these two things (and any software differences, which are indistinguishable; I installed the same stuff, the two of the systems are functional equivalents. Yes, they have different init images and different release identifiers, but in every practical way they function the same. Yes, the start up, shutdown and scheduling programs differ, but otherwise this a2 and b1 comparison behaves the same; both work well, both are tight, lean, efficient, and work very well.

Running their live instances was similar too, differing only in the versions of scheduling code and visual identifiers.

I know that we still have some hardware support issues for some devices and a few minor defects in other areas, but for me, this stuff is running great. I’ve been using nothing else today and I haven’t had a single failure with either instance, whether running on the live media or the installed instance.

On my Live USB key, there is no icon to install. I redid the tests in French and in French(BE). No icon to do the installation each time. This is not nice because I know that in English (US), the installation icon is present.

                              On the 1st screen of my Live USB key, there is;
                              UEFI
                              or
                              USB Disk
I take the USB Disk option

                              On the second screen of my Live USB key, I take the following options;
F2 > French or French (BE), it is the same
Use Legacy or Use Modern, it’s the same

                              On the third screen of my Live USB key, I take the following options;
                              F2 > French(BE)
                              F3 > Brussels
                              F4 > noautomount
                              F6 > space-iceWM
                              NORMAL Boot

Sorry for the inconvenience, but this could happen in other languages as well.

When I installed b1-sysvinit and b1-runit, I did not see an option to preserve the /home directory like I saw in previous install versions? Or is it there, and I have missed it? I installed b1-sysvinit first on one system. I did not see that option. I thought that I was going too fast and must have missed it. And when I was installing b1-runit, I was careful to try to find that option, but I must have missed it also in that install.

On my Live USB key, there is no icon to install. I redid the tests in French and in French(BE). No icon to do the installation each time. This is not nice because I know that in English (US), the installation icon is present.

Reproducible ONLY when selecting Space-(window manager) desktop. It is present in Rox-(window-manager). Wasn’t this the same in previous antiX 19.X live systems? (I am asking because I don’t remember and cannot test it out right now).
You can also find the installer in the menu in ALL different desktop sessions.

On the intel graphics+ 21b1-runit: I tested the runit release on 3 computers with intel graphics and had no problem booting with 4.9 and 5.10 kernel. I will see if I can charge the tablet with an atom CPU and test it there (the charger broke and haven’t replaced it since, going to try other methods).

When I installed b1-sysvinit and b1-runit, I did not see an option to preserve the /home directory

I will check once I am back on the laptop.
