I wanted to install antiX19-core 32bit on a 10″ single-core Intel Atom netbook, as a way of learning more about the component parts of the antiX operating system. I used Dolphin’s five youtube videos on this from 2014. Everything seemed to go well until the reboot to the Desktop environment – this resulted in a blank black screen, with cursor flashing in the top-left corner.

The following is a detailed account of what I did, which may be helpful for anyone who may want to help me troubleshoot this:

      1. initial install of antix19-core 32bit

Goes smoothly – I install kernel 4.4.200-antix.1-686-smp-pae (both image & headers) as I’ve previously found this works well on the Atom netbook.

      2. Reboot into kernel 4.4 (chosen from grublist at boot) & check Debian sources

Debian stable sources enabled (default) as seen in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list, with “contrib non-free” indicated (again this is the default). I didn’t want to go for ‘debian unstable’ sources, as I’m not to confident with my skills if the system breaks

      3. firmware installed:

      firmware-iwlwifi
      firmware-linux-free
      intel-microcode
… need to install 2465KB of archives, giving 449KB of additional drive space used.
      A warning message then appears:
“cryptsetup: WARNING: The intramfs image may not contain cryptsetup binaries nor crypto modules. If that’s on purpose, you may want to install the ‘cryptsetup-intramfs’ package in order to disable the cryptsetup intramfs integration and avoid this warning.”

      4. desktop environment installed:

      xserver-xorg
      x11-xserver-utils
      xfonts-base
      x11-utils
      lightdm
      lightdm-gdt-greeter
      xfce4
      xfce4-goodies
      … 0 upgraded, 195 newly installed, 0 to remove & 35 not upgraded
need to install 85.5MB of archives, giving 436MB of additional drive space used.

      5. Reboot into desktop environment

This results in a blank black display, with cursor flashing indefinitely in top-left corner of display

Try installing xserver-xorg-legacy and you may need dbus-x11 (It is quicker/easier to install xorg as it pulls things such as xinit as well).

BTW – This might be useful.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

          @anticapitalista
Many thanks for your help which is really appreciated 🙂
I assume xserver-xorg-legacy replaces xserver-xorg, but does it replace any of the others files that I used above ? (I don’t want to duplicate the function of any file installs).

An afterthought … what is the approximate idle RAM usage that one might expect, with a functional but minimal xfce desktop, when the core install is complete?

          Many thanks again

After several attempts, I finally got it to work, xfce desktop installed, so I’ll mark this post as solved. To do this I had to add a few files when setting up the desktop environment. So altogther this is what I installed to make the desktop work. Some of these may not be necessary but was unable to spend more time on this to eliminate those files (maybe you may know which ones can be deleted). Finally the extra ones I installed were based on some of the files I’d already installed on the antix19-base setup, which I identified in synaptic package manager.

Already installed in (4) in the first post were:
            xserver-xorg
            x11-xserver-utils
            xfonts-base
            x11-utils
            lightdm
            lightdm-gdt-greeter
            xfce4
            xfce4-goodies

In addition to the above, the extra ones I installed were:
            xserver-common
            xserver-xorg-legacy
            xserver-xorg-core
            xserver-xorg-input-all
            xserver-xorg-input-kdb
            xserver-xorg-input-mouse
            xserver-xorg-video-intel

Five minutes following login to the xfce desktop, idle CPU was ~1-2%, idle RAM usage ~105MB, and idle CPU temp ~ 42 degreesC.
Idle RAM activity increased to ~125MB, following installation of the the following applications:
            – mpv media player (instead of vlc)
            – clementine media player
            – libreoffice-Writer and libreoffice-Calc
            – synaptic package manager

            Two other issues came up:

            1. WiFi: in attempting to set this up, Ceni (installed by default) doesn’t seem function properly – when I launch it, the app exits, saying my ‘window is too small and need to resize it” (or something like that) which is puzzling as I can’t see anything wrong with it. Instead the wired (ethernet) connection works as default (as it does during the installation process). Added on 19/12/2019: I ditched ceni and finally used wicd to connect to wifi – it worked well, and could connect automatically to the network on booting)

            2. When rebooting I loose the panel and get the following notification:
No running instance of xfce4-panel was found
Do you want to start the panel? If you do, make
sure you save the session on logout, so the panel
is automatically started the next time you login”

Well, the box on the notification for saving the panel on logout is
ticked, so I don’t understand why it’s doesn’t save panel on exit.
On rebooting, I have to execute panel to reinstate it.

In conclusion I’m really pleased I got this far as I don’t consider myself
to be an advanced linux user at all. All comments/feedback from anyone who has
already tried is welcomed, as I’d like to improve this install.
            this install …
