Hi all. I use MX on all my desktops but I have an old laptop I want to donate to a poor school in Cambodia where we do charity work. I can install an old copy of PuppyLinux but not any other distros, including Antix. Surprised. I really want Antix on this laptop, but how, pleez? Many thanks for any help. It has 60Gb HDD and 760 MB RAM. 32bit I think. It will not boot from Antix DVD.

::I don’t see anything about it in the specs that would stop it from installing.
http://www.toshiba.co.uk/discontinued-products/satellite-a30-514/#(If you can put Puppy on it, then it hasn’t got a system password set.)
Are you sure your download of AntiX is a good one(?).
Try using the ‘base’ CD version(?).(If we can’t get AntiX on it for you, maybe try TinyCore Linux, it’s a little different to set up but runs well on old gear too.)

::Hi Goer, could you please clarify what means “it will not boot”.
Do you see the boot screen and after choosing something like language and pressing enter it will not boot(goes to a blank screen or what) ?
Are you really sure it’s not maybe a long boot-delay ?April 27, 2019 at 12:19 am #20748Member

::Thanks guys. Great. Not booting meant it ignores cd drive and goes to HDD (empty).
I will check Antix dvd integrity next.
A while ago I had dualboot winxp and mx16.
But now nothing will boot up from the dvd, except puppy.
Must persevere then.
I will now also set an admin password in BIOS, which is what I think you meant, yes?
Will keep you updated…..April 27, 2019 at 12:43 am #20750Member

::Nah, set password in BIOs and downloaded Antix base and verified it. But it will not boot on cd drive. So, Tiny core is the next try. (I SO wanted antix)
I even tried an old MX 14.4 without success.April 27, 2019 at 12:44 am #20751Member

::Because you say you are using an old copy of Puppy,
and the antiX-dvd (and any other distro) is ignored and goes straight to HDD.How do you burn the dvd ? Maybe there goes something wrong. You have to burn it as a image.

::Hi Goer,
If Puppy and TinyCore will install then antiX will install.
Have you tried burning a CD-ROM instead of a DVD? What burner software are you using? Try burning the CD-ROM at the slowest speed.
Plop will also probably work.
If you are willing, come back and we’ll see if we can get antiX installed for you.

::Thanks guys. I have Antix 32bit on CD rom. It was burned in k3b at lowest speed from the downloaded file as image. Yes, Antix xfce is my preferred choice.

::BTW, I tested all the CDs and DVDs on my desktop and they work. Maybe the CD ROM drive in the laptop is iffy?

::Yes, maybe the optical drive is flakey. Can you try a USB mounted DVD? Or try a LiveUSB and Plop.
Or try a different burner? Do you have more than one computer that has a burner?
I’ve also had success temporarily removing the hard drive from the laptop and installing in my desktop and then running the installer on the desktop, being careful to direct the installer to the temporarily installed drive from the laptop. Then after the install is finished I put the hard drive back in the laptop and boot it up.

::Optical drive is ok. Have just downloaded and installed Puppy Precise, no probs. Tried AntiX on Cd but fails to load. Spent enough time on this so I will stay with Puppy Precise for now. Many thanks for all your help guys. Cheers

::I managed a install of 32 bit antiX on a Itronix go book 3 ,(17.4 i think) via a live usb .. I used the safe grapix option and the auto mount feature .. just thinking this method may work for you ??

::Thanks for all the helpful replies. But the only distros I can install are Puppy(Precise) and Tinycore. With any others the optical drive does not start. Puppy will do me for now. Again, thanks guys.
