I just found, among my piles of junk in the storage, an old IBM Think Pad that I haven’t seen in a few years – in fact I forgotten we even had it. It has 256MB ram, and about 50 GB of a 100+ GB hard drive unused. Right now it has Winblows XP Pro on it and it will access the Internet. Just wondering if anyone has experienced any special issues with installing antiX on a Think Pad. Right now the Win XP takes up about 52GB of space, and I figure I can partition it in half (50 GB for Win, 50 GB for antiX, with about 1 GB left for swap). I will still be able to dual-boot with that much hard drive space, so as to be able to keep the Win XP partition for my Brewing software, which will accept Win XP. I’ll have no need to access the Internet from the brew-room, but will just connect when there is a need of for updating, etc.. Being unconnected from the internet means less bugs, termites, vermin or Trojan horses! Any issues/opinions/advice?
Oh BTW, does antiX still include a partitioner or do I need to go out and look for one? I didn’t pay attention when I installed 16 to my spare/backup laptop.

::“thinkpad” is a brand. there are about a million models of thinkpads.
That said, if you can run antiX live on that machine, you will know what you need to as far as if the hardware will work. 256MB of ram is not a lot of ram, even for antiX, but I have installed past versions of antiX on machines of similar specification.
gparted (graphical partition software) is included on the “base” (still CD sized) and the “full” versions of antiX.

::Look under the hardware section for my thinkpad thread . Mine I bumped to 1 gig of ram though. But it is a Pentium 3. My regular driver is a I5 with 12 gig of ram.
Oldest thinkpad I ever ran AntiX on was

::I said above it has 256MB Ram, but I get this from “System Properties;
System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Mobile CPU 1133MHz 1.13 GHz 512 MB of RAMI don’t remember what/where I got the 256MB Ram, but I’m happy to see that it has twice as much as I thought it had. According to the “System Requirements” on antiX’s web page, it only requires 128MB, so it looks to me that I should be able to use this as my ‘brewing computer.”
So Rocky, could this IBM be ‘bumped up” to 1G Ram?

::Since you don’t want to do too much (and you can’t anyway due to RAM and CPU restrictions of the hardware), I’d suggest you install antiX-base version.
What are you hoping to do on that old thinkpad?Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::Depends on model number of IBM Thinkpad. I had to research mine to be sure before I upgraded the ram. Bios and motherboards can be picky on ram upgrades.
Buy the wrong stick. It won’t boot. Give a AntiX 17 base iso a try if the cd drive is any good on that Thinkpad. 512MB of ram should be good enough to run the graphical installer. Pick no F key options on live boot. Hopefully the vesa driver will take over graphics on that Thinkpad.I would not buy ram till I was sure everything is functional 1st.

::Sometimes you need to search for specific forums and if you’re lucky enough, people have tried to increase to max ram before (just done it for my dell laptop).
It depends on the motherboard, maker’s bios and so on to find max ram. And like roky said depending on the brand module of the same size can work or not.
@Roky By the way I’ve seen what you did with that old laptop. Great job, really interesting.

What are you hoping to do on that old thinkpad? As I said above, it will be my brewroom computer IF it will run BeerSmith (which supports XP) – I still have to find out what Ram it will require for BeerSmith. I really won’t need to worry about whatever Linux is on it other than just to play around with – so the minimal antiX install might even work fine for me – as long as it will connect to the internet for updates/upgrades of the BeerSmith …. who knows? THX
@ rokytnji – Thanks for the answers on beefing up the ram …. in that case, I probably won’t attempt it – at least until I know if it will work well with BeerSmith. Even then, I’d have to find an old tutorial to get inside to install the ram. I’ve opened my Dell laptops to changeout and/or clean the CPU fan (which collects waaayyyy too much doghair and dust-bunnies, but never a thinkpad).

::OK Anti, I’ve d/l’ed antix 17 x64 base twice now from Linux Tracker, and all I get is 24.3kb. I don’t know what is wrong, but it should be 654Mb IIRC. I’m trying Sourceforge now.
BTW, can anyone provide me links to see what all is included in the ‘core and the ‘full’ distros. I’ll have to check into the manual if there is one, before I d/l ‘core. All I will need is a minimal browser (like Dillo), network capability, a ‘notepad’ (Not libre office), and a music player so I can play my Bluegrass disks. Like I said above, I’ll be using it in the Brewroom, for recipes on my BeerSmith program while I’m brewing. The only time it will have to go on the net will be to upgrade to a newer version of BeerSmith. With 55Gb of extra space on the XP partition, I can carve out about 5 or 10Gb for a small antiX partition. If this will be too much grief, I’ll check to see if DSL, FeatherLinux or Puppy are in line with my needs … I’d just prefer antiX becuz In the past I have used it – only used DSL and Puppy for short times, but preferred antiX over them.

::Here you can look at the difference between antix-full and antix-base
This is a clarification from Releases/News :
antiX comes in 4 flavours for both 32 and 64 bit processors.
antiX-full (c800MB) -4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm plus full libreoffice suite.
antiX-base (c620MB) -4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.
antiX-core (c310MB) – no X, but should support most wireless.
antiX-net (c150MB) – no X. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build.
https://antixlinux.com/blog/ scroll down to antix-17 released
antix-core comes without X, so it’s recommended for experienced users.
10 GB will be enough for base.
The linux-tracker download (24.3kb) you have to open with qBittorent or Transmission, then the download will start.

Thanks caprea, it’s been a long time since I’ve install X on a frugal install, so I’ll probably just use base, as Anti suggests.
BTW, in my post above, I meant to say it was the 386 version, NOT the 64 version ….. that old laptop would go nuts trying to figure out what 64 bit was!! I was eventually able to go to SourceForge and download the entire 386 base ISO, so that’s taken care of.
Once again, thanks for the links, mizpa

::Myself, I would d/l and install the antix 386-full, and then go through and delete the items I didn’t need. But then, that’s me.
I have build from core installing X utilizing fluxbox WM plus the programs I wanted, but it was easier for ME to just use FULL at the next installation and delete carefully.
But then you heard this from an ex-bad-a** biker who will drink and eat anything. And went on military survival training and put on weight.

I’m planning to do the same with base – I was just hoping to find out if there are some things I can’t or shouldn’t remove or it will screw up the install. THX
NOTE: some may have seen that I no longer have the E7440 listed in my sig. That’s becuz I swapped it to my wife for the D610. Win 10 will be better for her, and with Win7 Pro, I can dual-boot with antiX and not have to worry about WinBlows Updates wiping out my Grub. She says that the only reason I swapped is so that I get the next newer laptop, not her, but I don’t think that’s the case ;>).
