I’m attempting to revive an old Asus eee PC with a 4GB SSD, and having a heck of a time trying to find a version of AntiX that will fit on it.
I’ve been trying base/full versions, from 21 and working my way down. At 17.5 I hit some errors, and didn’t think it worth trying to troubleshoot without asking some basic questions first.

Does anyone know right off the bat which version ‘should’ fit? A couple of them state they will fit in 3.8-9 GB, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for me.

What’s the difference between base/full, other than LibreOffice? I don’t need it, so I’d be happy to go with the base version if I can find one that works, but curious about what else I might ‘lose’.

The core version seems like it might fit, but I’m looking for more than CLI. Perhaps I could go that route and then set runlevel 5 and get a window manager? Not sure, again about the differences in versions, what is/not included in core.

      Any help appreciated, thanks all!

No problem at all to fit antiX 21 in 4GB SSD:
I suggest antiX 21 Full (includes LibreOffice) and install to your 4GB SSD as Live. This is the way I am doing and it is superior way to traditional install. It takes for me 3.5Gb space with lots of added software. The initial Full install should take less than 3Gb.
The easiest: Boot from distribution Live antiX Full and execute from terminal:

        sudo live-usb-maker –force=usb

There are two dashes before ‘force’ parameter. It shows in print as one longer dash…
Just follow selection menus how you want to install to your SSD, such as encryption, etc…
        Good luck.

        P.S.:
When you boot antiX from SSD, after installation, add permanent boot parameter ‘from=hd’ and save this boot parameter through F8 save.

          Hello garrycook.

Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.

I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.

Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -Fxz from the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic that you are going to create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.

Your questions are answered even in the topics I indicated above, but I will answer you here.

Does anyone know right off the bat which version ‘should’ fit? A couple of them state they will fit in 3.8-9 GB, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for me.

Ideally, reserve at least 10 GB of disk space.

The core version seems like it might fit, but I’m looking for more than CLI.

It’s not just LibreOffice, there are several programs developed by the antiX community and others, as the PPC describes very well in its text, the antiX full ISO resembles a Swiss Army knife. There is a participant here on the forum who insists on using the base ISO and always needs the programs that are available in the full ISO.

The core version seems like it might fit, but I’m looking for more than CLI.

Both the base ISO and the full ISO have a “graphics environment”, but for those new to antiX, the full ISO is the easiest to get to know the full power of antiX.

antiX 21 works very well, even on computers with 1 GB of DDR RAM and Pentium 4 / Celeron processors with an IDE hard disk. Your computer will be faster than a Formula 1 car with antiX.

Don’t forget to take the time to read the topics I’ve indicated in this text, you won’t regret the time lost to do the reading, because you won’t waste time researching to answer the questions that are answered in these topics.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

Does anyone know right off the bat which version ‘should’ fit? A couple of them state they will fit in 3.8-9 GB, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for me.

What’s the difference between base/full, other than LibreOffice?

The core version seems like it might fit, but I’m looking for more than CLI.

The internal drive is so tiny, you may want to just use a live usb to run that system. Like olsztyn uses (and I do too), the antiX live system is fit for everyday use. Read a bit and play with the live system. Try out persistence – I’d recommend “static persistence” with under 3 GB RAM. But that’s an option, to get use from that computer.

For example, I have an old netbook without hdd, that I run from a USB live stick. I stream audio from it while I’m cooking. 🙂

Agree with christophe, I ran live only for months. Best to my mind is remaster after
any major changes and save important files to another USB stick as well as the one in
                use.
Make a swap partition on the internal drive and do not use persistence. You would have
Live USB storage as data area.

A good 64 GB USB stick is pretty cheap these days, as you presumably have an EEPC
with device soldered to the board a far better option. If internal used a lot and
goes defective the device is likely unusable. I look for sticks with a minimum of
5 year manufacturer warranty. Mostly use Trancend after some unpleasant trouble
with san disk. Maybe fake drives but unconfirmed. Replaced by amazon.

I have an eee pc, switched out the hard drive to something usable like a 500 GB SSD and surprised at how pleasant it is to work with. But like others have said, try running it from a USB. SanDisk makes some really tiny ones that you’ll hardly notice are attached to the computer.

                      hi blur 13,
some models of EEPC are unfortunately not upgradable to bigger ssd, on others it is not for
                      faint hearted.

Maybe garrycook could give device details so we can understand the situation better.

My EEPC clamshell edition case is held together with superglue and baking soda after the
(designed never to be opened) flimsy case clips snapped while opening using a very thin pry to
move them, that was in hot weather.
Maybe heating the case in an oven would have helped, risk of melting or other damage though..

User experience with the physicaly smaller usb drives has been dismal, fail after fail. I suspect
                      they just run too hot.

The Cruzer Fit usb plugs I am using are about $6 on eBay. Most are 32Gb USB2. One of them is USB3 but I do not see any difference in real performance since USB ports are USB2.
                        They seem equally fast.
What I was originally suggesting though was to install as Live to the internal SSD of 4GB. Then it is lightning fast… I have installed antiX as Live to internal disks on two my laptops. Works great. The beauty of Live install is that it is almost all Read I/O. No degrading of media over time. Unless you write lots of data each time, such as constantly saving large files to flash media.

Thanks @olsztyn! This is exactly what I was looking for. I just tried it out and it appears to have installed in under 3 minutes. Very nice.

And thanks to everyone else as well, I may play around with the other options next. Those Cruzer Fits are slick, and cheap too. $10 on Amazon for 32GB shipped next day? Yes please.

Your question of the original post was rather specific to your hardware and I do not think you will find the answer by RTFM. Nevertheless links to antiX resources posted by @marcelocripe are in general worthwhile to become familiar with antiX.
Specifically to your hardware though, I expect you will find your hardware just perfect to run antiX. None other OS can do on your hardware what antiX can…
