Hello. Just installed AntiX Core 19.3 in an old P3 brick with i3 and I can’t seem to get sound to work correctly.
This machine previously had Windows XP with sound working just fine.

      # aplay -l
      aplay: device_list:272: no soundcards found...
      # cat /proc/asound/cards
      --- no soundcards ---

My sound card is an ancient ES1988, supported by Meastro3 as according to https://www.alsa-project.org/wiki/Matrix:Vendor-ESS_Technology

      # lspci | grep audio
00:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: ESS Technology ES1988 Allegro-1 (rev 12)

      Already ran
      # modprobe -r snd-maestro3 ; modprobe snd-maestro3

      # lsmod | egrep '^snd'
      snd_maestro3 24576	0
      snd_ac97_codec 102400	1 snd_maestro3
      snd_pcm 86016	2 snd_ac97_codec,snd_maestro3
      snd_timer 28672	1 snd_pcm
      snd 57344	4 snd_ac97_codec,snd_timer,snd_maestro3,snd_pcm

      Seems something fails on boot:

      # dmesg | grep maestro
      [ 15.827969] snd_maestro3 0000:00:08.0: Direct firmware load for ess/maestro3_assp_kernel.fw failed with error -2
      [ 15.828240] snd_maestro3: probe of 0000:00:08.0 failed with error -2

I’m particularly new to linux and have no idea how to proceed.

        Hello.

        Based on: https://wiki.debian.org/snd-maestro3
You need to download the firmware tarball, configure, prepare it and install it.

But maybe it is enough to download an already prepared firmware and place it in /lib/firmware/ess/

If possible, try to follow the steps in the Debian wiki page and see if that helps.
Or first try and download https://github.com/Jolicloud/linux-firmware/blob/master/ess/maestro3_assp_kernel.fw?raw=true and place it in a ess folder created in /lib/firmware/ and see if that works. It would be the simplest solution (if it works).

        Whatever solution you find easiest.

        Welcome to antiX!

          Welcome.

Since you say you are new to linux, you should really use the base or full version. Hopefully sound will work OOTB.
core (and net) are meant for experienced users.

Added: an older kernel might be needed.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
