Sorry that i did not understand where to add the debug output. I just ran the commands from a terminal. If you don’t mind telling me where, I’ll do it asap.

Yes, I agree that the timing is important and probably the right solution. I could not find which file antiX runs at the start. If I knew that, I can probably tinker with it to set the wallpaper last and add a sleep as you suggested if necessary.

FYI the content of ~/.screenlayout/default.sh is: xrandr –output eDP-1 –primary –mode 3200×1800 –pos 0x0 –scale “.6x.6”

Yes, it sounded like that was what you did. You installed it, LOL. So go look in synaptic what programs got installed, and figure out what it runs.

I meant to put debugs and printenv in the scripts it runs (like its autostart file) and then you will have clues as to what it was doing and why.

          Hey, Hector_A.

This is an idea I got while reading this thread. Perhaps this inelegant work-around might work.
          Regarding your wallpaper:

          1. Launch the control centre.

          2. Set the wallpaper from here – BUT change it to No wallpaper, then you can select a color. Try black, maybe.

          3. Then try setting the wallpaper (after setting the resolution) through feh, from your openbox startup file.

It worked on a quick test here, where the color came up upon re-login to openbox, & the feh command covered it with the image I chose.

@BobC I added the three lines you supplied one at the end of each corresponding file i.e.: “$(date) $0”, “$(date) $HOME/.desktop-session/startup and printenv. The output is:

I hope this is what you want to look at.

@christophe Unfortunately your workaround did not produce the desired result. I got just a black wallpaper as the selection does not persist upon reboot. The selected wallpaper again initially displays correctly but the system sets the resolution afterwards and the wallpaper gets out of scale.

So, I guess that means the other two programs never ran.

Was something not installed or configured correctly that would cause that result?

At this point you have choices. The best would be to fix what is setup wrong so that your openbox runs just like another antiX window manager. To do that you will need to figure out what you misanalyzed, and correct it. I’d suggest looking at the code and configuration files of an implementation that’s working and copy the relevant pieces.

A less desirable option would be to run missing pieces from the program that did run and see if that fixes it.

You might try using Forum Search here for openbox desktop session startup and see if you can find instructions for a successful installation and compare them to what you did?

Now you understand why I try to use a distro, and contribute to improving it, rather than trying to create custom setups myself, which I also did before. In the end it produces better results for less effort. That doesn’t mean you can’t blaze your own trail. It’s just wise to see it has a price in time and effort.
