::By the way, as far as File Managers go, SpaceFM, PCManFM and zzzFM are all from the same basic code.
According to what I have read, SpaceFM is a fork of PCManFM. The Arch Linux documentation on SpaceFM indicates that development and maintenance stopped as of March 4, 2018, though it looks as if someone did pick it up. However, our former contributor, Skidoo, took the SpaceFM code, cleaned it up and produced zzzFM, so of these three window managers, zzzFM is definitely the most current, and from what I can tell, it’s somewhat more efficient too.
As for PCManFM, though SpaceFM was forked from it, there was some incremental effort, though once again, the Arch documentation shows stagnation, and as of September 2022 a link to previous documentation disappeared; Arch has some good documentation about various things, including these two file managers.
I don’t know if any distributions outside of our “space” have found or picked up zzzFM; if so, I’ve not spotted any.--

::@Brian Masinick – Yes. Zzzfm is a fork of SpaceFm, that was forked from PcManFM… And I also think Zzzfm is the more up to date than SpaceFM, but I haven’t checked PcManFM status.
Since Zzz’s main (and only?) Dev is now gone, it’s development stoped. New functionality, like better bookmarks, Trash Can, Recent Files, new Toolbar options, etc, is all done just by editing it’s config file. Thanks to being to editable (althought not excatly easy to edit), zzzfm can be tweaked to add more and more features, but, unfortunatly, it’s how far as I can go- it’s development is, as far as I know, stopped.Unless some bug comes up, it’s a finished product – just by editing the config files I can even add Cloud connectivity and make zzzfm act as GUI to install .deb files (or, in fact, zzzfm can be made to act as a GUI for any file related action users may want to perform – it also serves as a GUI for scripts, like Yad. so zzzfm itself provides tools to keep being expanded).
Only when I took the screenshot I realized I have not disabled desktop icons… well, this PC has Gb of RAM, I can spare a dozen Mb for those deslktop icons I never used (the stuff that I put there was when I was testing the IceWM manager script).
What I like in antiX (well, the GUI part- IceWM) is that it can look as plain or as complex as users want. In my case, anyone checking out my desktop may think it’s KDE or some other kind of D.E…

::@PPC – I like your news by the way…
My desktop is much simpler in comparison.
My daily work system is antiX SID/Bookworm. Screenshot taken on one of my lower end laptops – Thinkpad X61, Core2Duo, 4Gb memory – about 15 years old:/home/demo/Downloads/screenshot.jpg

::re: “And I also think Zzzfm is the more up to date than SpaceFM, but I haven’t checked PcManFM status.”
zzzFM is, without a doubt, more “current” than either of the other window managers mentioned. It was because of their dormant, lack of activity that Skidoo rewrote SpaceFM in the first place, and as I said, on the Arch Linux site, which is pretty comprehensive in both information, details, and cited references, states that the PCManFM link also disappeared, a clear indication that it has also lacked support from the official link location.
There are many other window managers all over the place, but of the “lean window managers” that are also reasonably easy to use and the ones we include by default, zzzFM has a nice combination of features and modest size.
Of course, we may have to consider potential updates to zzzFM over time; for now it appears to be fine.

Nice setup. I hear that those devices are built to last, like tanks!
I usually sticky with antiX’s default window managers, currently IceWM… My RAM usage, in antiX 22, runit, with volume icon running, but without desktop icons and conky, in Kernel 6.1 is about 155Mb. But I have RAM enough to spare and use compton for advanced composition, using a bit more RAM, and I find system notifications helpful, so, I use a bit more RAM in Dunst – with those 2 packages, antiX has just about the same look and feel and any modern OS. I use IceWM’s system tray “network status” square has an inbuilt and interactive Network system tray icon.P.

I appreciate that…..thanks! My first ever exposure to a tiling window manager, and HLWM was here in antiX. It quickly become my favorite WM. 🙂- This reply was modified 1 month, 2 weeks ago by meurglys.
