After watching the recent D.O. antiX 17 video, I decided to install it on the hard drive and give it a try. [using grub from mx17].
Mostly everything works well [installed on 2 individual Thinkpad T420 laptops running icewm & xfce side by side]
Having some problems with some of the settings –
for instance:
*firewall shuts itself off after turning it on [control center]. Cannot enable with “Gufw is installed, but not enabled. Open Control Centre-→ Network-→ Manage Firewall” – unlocked, tried all settings, none worked. Doing something wrong… google searched, watched videos, checked forum
———————-
* in ‘user accounts’ I have it set to auto-login yet it always asks for password on startup. [issue only xfce, icewm logs in correctly]* next it wants a password for ‘wicd needs to access your computer’s network cards’ dialogue box. This only started happening when I installed xfce desktop, but previously not with icewm.
——————-
* It asks for the user password for applications that ordinarily require root password – such as synaptics. It only asks for root password when in terminal. Would like to use the proper authentification requirements where necessary. Tried resetting root password in ‘user account settings’.
——————-
* installed compton compositor, but doesn’t open.[icewm & xfce]
——————-
I realize that this is not a fancy distribution like mx (the only other distrubution I am familiar with), but installed it for the purpose of learning more about the base of mx without going too far out of my league, but maybe I am.The most important issue is keeping the firewall enabled.
So far, I like it very much – both desktops.
Thank you!
inxi- F attachment failed (for security reasons?)
will post in text body if necessary.
Thank you.

::issue only xfce
MX Linux has xfce pre-installed, has compositing enabled…
but you’ve decided to “level up” and tackle the challenge of fitting a square peg into a round hole, eh?It asks for the user password for applications that ordinarily require root password – such as synaptics. It only asks for root password when in terminal.
synaptics == touchpad hardware mfg
synaptic == package managerAsking for user password is the expected (sudo, or gksu) behavior.
You’re aware of the need to launch X applications (gui applications) from command line using gsku (NOT sudo), right?
^—- We’re missing a stickied doc/tutorial covering authentication, but I’ve begun drafting one.If “terminal” is asking for a root password, is it “all the time, every time”?
During betatesting, I noticed and reported that one (maybe 2) isolated operations did, in fact, demand root password.
Foggy memory, but I thought both were subsequently changed/fixed to now request user password.installed compton compositor, but doesn’t open.
me too.
I mean: I’ve learned to avoid compton b/c it crashes or goes haywire with whatever config settings I’ve tried to use.
That (search online, find) seems to be the key ~~ figuring out a workable config. (The defaults, in the absence of a customized config… go boom!)
In case you care to ‘speriment, there’s another compositing manager available, called “xcompmgr”.firewall shuts itself off after turning it on
Sigh.
I had patched that bugger, uploaded gufw to github… and the patched version was omitted from antiX17.Are you CERTAIN the firewall is “shutting itself off?
As in, did you check: sudo service ufw status
or you’re just seeing grayed-out “firewall status” misleadingly displayed in the gufw UI each time you open it?January 24, 2018 at 9:57 am #5826Memberrej
::Thanks so much for your reply –
Yes, wrong term – I mean the Synaptic Pkg Mngr.
In MX the root password is required for installing packages, changing user options, setting up wireless, etc. Not in antiX.
antix 17, terminal – just tried inxi -F, no password required for that. Mostly everything else required root as it should.
————–Was only seeing grayed-out “firewall status” displayed in the gufw UI. So maybe it was turned on already?
Followed this suggestion:
[“If you start it like “sudo gufw” and use the “unlock” button on the bottom right then you should be able to use it. At least that works here.

_____________________________Tried re-installing antiX 17 clean with xfce, however, configuring USB devices to automatically mount, getting user to log in automatically and many other settings, such as compositing are too far above my head at this point, but will re-try it again and see if I can do better after snapshot of fairly configured antiX 17 with icewm. Surprisingly, I am liking icewm, which I found too awkward at first. Have only experience with xfce MX, and thought it would be a little easier with a familiar desktop. But I realized that the default desktop is better until I learn more. When I gain more knowldge as to how to manage files in the Rox file manager and SpaceFM, I will like it a lot more.
I should have posted icewm and xfce questions separately.
I installed xcompmgr through synaptic pkg mngr and cannot locate it anywhere. does it use the same name once installed? All I want it for, is to make the panel transparent. Is there an option to auto-hide the panel? In the xfce installation, I noticed it had an option to “intelligently hide” – it did not, however, function when applied.
Thanks again for the assistance!
