After the disaster I faced with sid and the advise I was given I reinstalled and used testing (the buster parallel). It had been going well but last upgrade keeps wanting to throw everything out and bring systemd in.
I tried to revert the damage (I am running sddm openbox and some lxde software) and when I started sddm manually both kbd and mouse lost function. I rebooted and I go into emergency (no tty) and if I type exit it goes into kernel panic.
So now on chroot this is what I get. If I install systemd-must-die then on the next dist-upgrade run it wants to remove it and install systemd.

Somewhere within lxde pkgs is where the culprit exists, but exactly where I don’t know.

Wait for the new systemd-free policykit-1 debs to hit the repos.
BTW where did you get systemd-must-die from? It is not in our repos.

BTW where did you get systemd-must-die from? It is not in our repos.

I wondered, where my ‘systemd-must-die’ came from. So I have checked the repos.
‘systemd-must-die’ is in the antix repo: http://iso.mxrepo.com/antix/testing/pool/nosystemd/p/prevent-systemd/

Yes it is in the repos, my mistake. It is not installed by default though and is not necessary.

Thinking there might have been something I did that messed up the installation I revived an old backup, 5mos old, put it on a stick and booted. It worked fine, it was an early backup of the same installation. Thinking that if I update it and it works I can replace the messed up installation and just the software I has added over the past few months. Basically the same minimalist openbox with some lxde tools. It took a while to update, nothing weird like systemd coming in, everything seemed fine.

                              I reboot, kernel panick!
The only thing I added was the latest kernel on top of the 4.14 I had. I tried the other kernel just in case … same thing.

So is buster busting us? Anyone else running testing?

Both the new kernel and the original kernel are having a kernel panic?
Any interesting clues in the kernel panic output? like cannot mount /find root file…..
Was the kernel changed on a live usb? did you use the utility to change the kernel on a live usb? I think it is live-kernel-updater
A copy of the dist-upgrade apt history might help… but being it was a clean dist-upgrade than I am doubtful of that

No it is not a live system, it is a backup of a hard installation, the one that broke last week. Just put the image in a usb partition with its own grub etc. It booted fine and run fine, apart from the expected delay in usb action.

I think somehow the links on root for bin sbin lib were wiped out.
