::@BobC – the advanced FT10 config, that installs some nice little additions (zzzfm, compton and gnome-clock), and, for now disables permanently the original “volumeicon” and toggles conky on/off for the current session.
If you want, you can test this initial version of the script…#!/bin/bash choices=$(yad --center --height=300 --width=500 --title="FT10 Advanced Initial setup Options" --list --checklist --column "" --column "" TRUE "Use zzzfm as default file manager" TRUE "Enable Recycle bin in zzzfm" TRUE "Install Compton compositor" TRUE "Install Clock/timer/Alarm app" FALSE "Disable default antiX volume icon (affects all Window Managers)" FALSE "Disable Conky (affects current session only)") echo $choices if [[ "$choices" =~ "zzz" ]]; then gksu apt install zzzfm-common zzzfm desktop-defaults-zzzfm-antix && yad --center --text="zzzfm is installed" fi if [[ "$choices" =~ "Clock" ]]; then gksu apt install gnome-clocks && yad --center --text="gnome-clocks is installed" fi if [[ "$choices" =~ "compton" ]]; then gksu apt install compton && yad --center --text="compton is installed" fi if [[ "$choices" =~ "volume" ]]; then echo disabling default volumeicon pkill volumeicon if grep -Po '^volumeicon' ~/.desktop-session/startup; then echo volumeicon found in startup, removing it sed -i 's/volumeicon &//g' ~/.desktop-session/startup fi else echo enabling default volumeicon pkill volumeicon ; volumeicon & if grep -Po '^volumeicon' ~/.desktop-session/startup; then echo volumeicon already in startup else echo volumeicon not found in startup, inserting it echo "volumeicon &" >> ~/.desktop-session/startup fi fi if [[ "$choices" =~ "Conky" ]]; then echo disabling Conky pkill conky else echo enabling Conky conky & fiDecember 17, 2021 at 12:09 pm #73119MemberPPC
::Version 0.9.9.3 is out – over at https://gitlab.com/antix-contribs/ft10-transformation/-/blob/main/packages/ft10-transformation_0.9.9.3_all.deb
Changes:
-added .desktop file for the news app,
-changed light mode color to a blueish tone,
-changed some menu icons on the Tiled Menu template,
-fixed a missed icon on the toolbar editor widow (I hate when tiny details like that are missing),
-fixed regression in pt-br tooltipTodo’s:
-Add more info to the “+/-” tooltip (I forgot)
-Add a version of the yad window I talked in previous posts to the script that configures FT10- by default nothing will be changed, but the user can put check boxes in anything before continuing the normal Ft10 setup (for antiX 19 users, they can install zzzfm from here, but it also allows to install Compton and the very nice and tiny Gnome Clocks app, also disable “volumeicon”)- this change is hanging on BobC’s feedback…I’m hoping to publish version 1.0 this Weekend and take a rest from this project

::@BobC – No hurry! I’m quite happy with how FT10 looks and feels.
I just fixed, in the latest version 0.9.9.4 (https://gitlab.com/antix-contribs/ft10-transformation/-/blob/main/packages/ft10-transformation_0.9.9.4-testing_all.deb), the “+/-” English tooltip, to be more descriptive, and also reworked a bit the window that manages the menu, so the “tiles” button is easier to use (changed its icon and also, when you toggle Titles on/off, the menu pops open, so you can instantly see the change).
My goal is that FT10 makes antiX as easier to use as possible, allowing quick and easy access to the most used features (and also adding a few tiny ones, like the weather and news apps). I trully hope that any newbie using FT10 will almost instantly get how it works, and how to customize it. I tried to address some of the points many newbies raised in the forum, over time: How do I add icons to the toolbar? How to change the clock? How do add an application to the menu? Ft10 also makes it easier and faster to find applications, search for file and update the system.
I used to hate the Tiles on Windows 8, but I hope that the Tiled menu offers a fast way to perform most of the basic tasks (the first section is related to the generic apps- file manager, web browser, etc, plus the calculator), then Office work (also pdf documents reader and mtpaint) and on-line services (youtube, weather, news and access to bit torrents)- it includes conky toggle because it can be handy to quickly toogle it on/off. The single remaining space in the Tiles section I have reserved it for gnome clocks, in my system- because if you are at the computer and want to set an alarm do to something, it’s faster to use it than using a smartphone). The single feature I would like to be on the tiles would be a nice Gui Calendar (sea monkey’s Calendar is great, but, by default it’s not a stand alone app- it can become one, installing an extension). The biggest criticism I can make to FT10 is not having a GUI to edit the Tiles… They can be edited manually, but it’s not a very intuitive task, because the application, the icon, and the title for each Tile are mixed with a bunch of numbers that set the Tile position… If you want to manually edit the tiles, you can do so, editing “~/.config/jgmenu/tiles.csv” in a text editor, Back it up first, just in case…

::PPC, I got the system updated and upgraded on flashdrive, then installed the most current versions of jgmenu and ft10. I then went to the menu and enabled ft10. I got the menu style chooser, and then the new setup config screen. I selected all of them, even compton (not sure what that will do for me), and it started running, I know because it came back twice saying zzzfm was installed first, and then a 2nd one (I forget what on the 2nd one), and it appears to have finished, but it never switched to ft10 and the antiX volumeicon is still visible.
I will try enabling it again.

::@BobC- The “install extra apps” is the only part of FT10 that’s not finalized- I made it available there more like a proof of concept, because, according to my tests, this (yet first draft of the) script should download one, by one, the checked apps (on my system, it simply displays the images that the apps are downloaded, because I have all of them installed, I’ll have to check on my antiX 21 on virtualbox if there’s any problem installing any of the apps)- first please test the default choices, to completely disable volumeicon and turn off conky for the session- It should work fine (it did in all my tests). Once that is is proven to work 100% for you, try installing the apps (that menu comes up every time you run the option to enable FT10 or choose a menu style…
The install section of the script probably needs a rework something like add the selected apps to a variable and then run gksu apt install on the contents of that variable, making it a single step, not a sequential install one, then another, etc- probably the script was still running in the background, waiting to install everything, before editing the Window Manager config files and activating tint2…
I’ll keep an eye out for you feedback!P.

::@BobC- I think I got all the kinks out of the “install extras” part of the script, in version 0.998b
Please test it (it now opens a terminal window, showing the install process of the selected applications, if the user selected to install one or more extra apps)
-The “Compton” is used for transparency and other visual effects, also can be handy if the user experiences any tearing in the screen- launch Compton from the terminal, once installed, to check it out (once you close the terminal, compton stops running)
-Dunst is added so user can have notifications (it only uses RAM after the first notification is shown)
-I added the option to install gnome-clocks because it’s simply the best all in one clock-alarm-countdown timer-stopwatch I found on-line, that was already localized, it’s the biggest package if the bunch, but worth it if you need to set simple alarms… It does not stay resident in RAM (and also could use a “place in system tray” option)P.

::Interestingly, about 5 or 10 minutes later it did switch to ft10. My guess is it was doing the installs but not showing anything on the screen.
If it would be easy, I’d suggest just letting it output what is going on to a terminal window so I know its still working on it.
I tested the toolbar icon manager, and I like that it now uses app-select. I double clicked the program and it added the icon to the toolbar.
Searchmonkey looks like it has oodles of features, haven’t really tried it yet.
The Weather icon works here π
I like that it changed the default file manager and the way zzzfm installed, no surprise programs running on the first click.
One thing missing is a “Show Desktop” icon. Maybe we could make one without using the IceWM one?
Something I do miss from conky and the IceWM monitors is some sort of readout on what is my wifi IP address, and is there data moving up/down, which ConnMan doesn’t show. I don’t need to see it all the time, but it would be nice if it was readily available. I noticed that right clicking the CPU monitor ran a program, and just wondering if there is something already included in antiX we could run if you right click the network icon?
I tried the updater icon, and it works. Is it going to check for updates automatically periodically, or just when clicked? Normal users don’t think of those things till its too late and something blows up is something I’ve seen too many times. I have some code that runs from cron if interested…
All in all, it’s impressive! Very friendly π

::I see your post above, and will redo my testing with your newest code after I get back from a grocery run.

::Thanks for the feedback, Bob!
Well, I changed the script, it now does display a terminal window showing the install process of the selected extra apps.
The Updater, id my antiX updater script, thats included, out of the box in antiX- it only checks for updates when you run it, when not running, it uses no system resources (updaters that automaticaly show new available updates have to stay resident in RAM or be called from a cron job- on my work pc, the antiX updater is run every day at 15h)
The show desktop option is available in the very same place Windows 7 and 10 have it: do you see a thin vertical line on the right side of the toolbar? Hover your mouse pointer on that, all you’ll see what it does… π
Yeah, I like Conky only to check out network activity- that’s why I added a tile just to toggle it on/off, if you find a script to display info on the network connection, I can create a yad window to display it, and launch it from a right click on the Connmann pseudo system tray icon… Hint- if you right click the CPu/RAM, a small yad window displaying info about the disks is shown (I need a similar script for the network…).P.

::@BobC – I dug around some cli commands and came up with this one liner that gives all the info you want… what do you think about it? It’s not pretty, but it sure is informative…
ip_info=$(hostname -I); roxterm --hide-menubar --title $ip_info --zoom=0,85 --geometry 130x10 -e bash -c "watch -t -n0.5 cat /proc/net/dev; read -N1;" &- This reply was modified 1 year, 4 months ago by PPC.

::I admire your creativeness, but I am looking for basic info like antiX’s conky provides. I’m fine if it’s homegrown and/or in text, but I need to see the device, IP address, upload and download speeds, and errors. Total bytes uploaded/downloaded would also be nice to have.
iftop (loaded on this machine already) seems to have the info but needs elevation to display the performance info.
cbm (simple – see pic) and bmon (super fancy and requires fuse stuff) provide the kind of info I’m looking for. cbm was a 20k package download from the repo.

::@BobC- since having quick access to upload and download speed is a nice feature, I added a cbm window, as a right click option on the “network” icon, on the toolbar, no version 0.9.9.8c – it comes up on a trimmed window, taking only the space it needs to show the data, without a menu bar and displaying the Ip adress on the title bar)
I have to try to make some tweaks to the config menu (disable conky too, not just volumeicon)
Any more suggestion?Edit: probably, the next version of cbm’s window will also display the network name on the title- that info could be handy…
