Looking for user experience and opinion…
Test case:
Recent antiX version (I guess this would be antiX 19) with nVidia vs. antiX with Nuveau. In parenthesis I specified antiX 19 and not antiX 21 for the only reason that I have not seen antiX 21 working with nVidia reported yet…
My question is:
According to users’ subjective experience (if there are any benchmarks that would be fantastic but not counting on such):How much is video performance of Nuveau driver feels worse on heavy graphics rendering than with nVidia?
I am aware that in general experience in Linux nVidia has been quoted as much better performance than Nuveau but my question is specific to antiX as I have a theory that antiX is in a unique position to compensate for such difference in driver performance thanks to much smaller memory footprint taken away from graphics apps than bloated Linux distros. In other words – more memory available for graphics app.
So far I was able to perform only a test of similar comparison: Performance between antiX 21 (with Nuveau driver) and Windows 10 with nVidia driver. Windows 10 used here as most likely approximating in performance a typical bloated Linux distro, although many may disagree…
In result of such test my subjective impression was in favor of antiX, using Google Earth for 3D image rendering. This is for the lack of capability to compare performance for 3D video games…

A lot. On low powerd devices, use Nuveau driver only if you want to use your computer to do office work or browse the web. Even streaming youtube videos with Nuveau can be a pain… But it all depends on your hardware- if you have a powerful enough system you may only notice a difference when running a very demanding application (ex: a very high resolution game)

My target of hardware for comparison is rather modest, mid-power: Laptop with 4G memory, i5 first generation, nVidia card.

I’ve tried both drivers and there is simply no comparison.
“While the open-source Radeon Linux graphics stack has made some remarkable improvements this year not only from AMD but also the likes of Valve, unfortunately not as much can be said about the state of the open-source NVIDIA (Nouveau) driver. The Nouveau Linux graphics driver remains much slower than the proprietary driver, the hardware with the best support is several generations old, and due to the lack of signed firmware images there still isn’t yet any open-source 3D for the Turing GPUs that have been shipping for months. But there may be hope in 2020.”

Nvidia legacy 390 is installed and runs fine on my desktop box.
I get the very well known module warning on boot but that is irrelevant.Operating System: Linux-x86_64 antiX21
Nvidia Driver Version 390.144
Server Version Number 11.0
Card is GeForce GTX 550 TiKernel is 5.10.88- antix
High resolution Video and Editing big images such as Nikon Raw hugely improved.
Just another my attempt of making nVidia work under antiX 21 suffered another failure… Although install went though with kernel dropped to 4.9 it appears that Xorg refuses to start. I am giving up in the face of exhausting ideas how to make it work.
To clarify the above quote, this is in relation to nVidia 340 on NVS 3100M hardware.
On a much later laptop with later nVidia hardware (NVS 4200M) nvidia 390 driver appears to have installed. However on this laptop:
– Due to Optimus it seems the Intel video is how this laptop is booting, not nVidia.
– If nVidia 390 is not installed I expected Nouveau to be installed and taking precedence however again it is the Intel video and inxi -FZx shows Nouveau to not be installed.
– Still video performance on my rudimentary Google Earth test appears better under antiX 21 with the default Intel than on Windows 10 with nVidia driver.These are just a few of my somewhat confusing test observations done on several Thinkpads – T410, T520 both with nVidia chips, although of different generation…

I have not seen antiX 21 working with nVidia reported yet…
How come ? Then I will do that with this. I own two nvidia boxes.
A laptop with an old nvidia 8400M GS card , antiX21 with nvidia driver runs very well with the 340-nvidia legacy driver already reported here more than once.
A desktop with a 960 Gtx, antiX21 runs great with the 470 nvida driver.Both installed with the driver-installer from control-centre ddm-mx.
If you encounter problems with the 340 or also with optimus you should open a thread for this,might someone can help.blur13

It is not included in stable releases of Debian anymore, has serious unfixable security vulnerabilities, and may not be updated for new kernels in a timely manner. You are highly recommended to use the built-in Nouveau driver if security is a priority.”

The 340 drivers are not included in the Bullseye repos. It’d be interesting to know if anyone is able to get it working anyways.

340 drivers are in antiX-21 ‘bullseye’ repos.
They installed fine on my antiX-21-runit desktop using ddm-mx.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
