::Hi, you may also read the description of both Linux distribution that avoid ‘systemd’ init.
I believe the question was also asked on the forum already.
I use Devuan occasionally hence my knowledge is limited to an earlier installation (kept up-to-date via upgrades/updates).Devuan:
1) fork of Debian, has its own exclusive repositories
2) mid-weight distribution (XFCE is default desktop environment)antiX:
1) shares some repositories with Debian (which means less work and infrastructure is needed), ‘systemd’ kept out using apt-pinning.
2) strives for minimalism in resource usage which implies lighter desktop environments (fluxbox, IceWM, JWM etc.)
3) great live[-USB] toolsNovember 2, 2022 at 3:25 pm #92089Member

::@amg, you have “Devian.” Were you speaking to Debian or Devuan or something else?
sybok’s brief descriptions of Devuan and antiX are spot on. If you are looking for a systemd free operating system, both work. I found myself using antiX as a result of experimenting and loving MX Linux, its sister distribution. However, MX Linux didn’t have a minimal installation without desktop environments and its user respins had issues (for me). What kept me on antiX was sybok’s item 3, the amazing live[-USB] tools, snapshots, etc.
antiX is a small but helpful community. Welcome!

MX does have one now. It is MX Fluxbox. Very nice. Well done…

techore, please tell which “etc” live tools are absent from mx linux compared to antix. I did not realize this and am not aware of any missing.

::The only light tools that are available in antiX and not MX Linux that I can think of are unofficial forum scripts provided by community members.
Some tools may be located in different menu locations but MX Linux and antiX have VERY SIMILAR tools and utilities and several people who participated in both efforts. At one point anticapitalista also assisted the early MX Linux development team, though I don’t think that is still going on but I could be mistaken. Nevertheless there remains a high degree of collaboration between the two distributions.

By minimal, I mean without a desktop environment and xwindow applications like antix-core. There are user created MX respins and I’ve tried them. I was unhappy with them.

Thanks. I see your point. Minimal is not what MX is intended. Indeed, even MX Fluxbox is not as antiX in terms of operating memory footprint. It is very nice though if one can afford some more memory resource.

@iznit, I guess that was ambiguous. Maybe? 🙂
I was not referring to “/etc” but “etc.” which is the abbreviation for etcetera. Yeah, I can see why that would be confusing. I’ll have to try to spell that out when talking with my antiX friends. Totally natural to think its the /etc directory.

“etc”(((various, assorted, miscellaneous))) live tools are absent from mx linux compared to antix.I just wrote about this in my daily collection of “What are you here with…” comments and informational notes.
MX Linux is a richer, larger, and more complete collection of packages that do have an MX implementation of a similar tool called MX Package Installer.
It’s my favorite full featured general purpose system.
antiX is my favorite lean, mean, efficient system for older hardware.--

‘I left MX Linux due to it not having a minimal installation, e.g. antix-core, and stayed with antiX due to the amazing live[-USB] tools, snapshots, and such.’
My feelings regarding MX Linux are the same that I have for antiX base or full, however, the difference is antiX gave me the option of core. I’ve read on the forum the justifications for not having a mx-core and the rebuffs when people ask for it. Honestly, it makes no sense to me. Generate an ISO before you install xorg, desktop environment, and all the GUI applications. Simple enough, right? However it is not my decision and I do feel it is an excellent Linux distro if not for me.
The beauty of opensource and Linux is we have options.
We have wandered far afield. 🙂

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsNovember 4, 2022 at 1:47 am #92272Memberseaken64
::MX does not have a Core because that type of distro is not what they are about. They provide a full system with tools to enhance the experience of using a curated Linux distro. That’s their choice.
antiX is lean and mean and made for the person who wants to build up from a Core with only the features they want.
MX and antiX are related in that they share some tools and some developers and contributors. But they are different.
BTW, Dolphin Oracle did master a basic MX system for those who want to build from more of a basic system than normally provided by MX.

::I would add that it has been possible for a very long time to morph and rebuild MX Linux just like you can with antiX. The only difference is that you have to do some of the work yourself.
Nevertheless I would argue that both antiX and MX Linux (and Simply MEPIS, more than a decade ago) have/had sufficient tools to do that because I built several myself around 15 years ago.
