I’ve brought this up in the antiX beta threads in the MX forum but so far have received no responses. Perhaps my posts there weren’t seen.
On my system, an older AMD Athlon x2 64 5000+ with onboard Radeon graphics, when booting from either the 32-bit or 64-bit antiX19b2 USB it hangs at start X. I get a black screen for 3 minutes then am prompted to look at the boot problems, the last entry of which is “slim”. If I log in at the console then run slim, it starts. It was doing the same thing in beta 1. If I install antiX it works fine. If I do a frugal install of antiX it works fine. Slim is unable to start an X11 session at the pre-login runlevel from within the squashfs on the USB, or so it appears to me.
See my posts in the thread at https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=51472 for detailed information including inxi results.
(New topic because I can’t find an antiX beta testing topic in this forum, which surprises me. I thought there would already be one in the Development forum.)

– Slim not communicating with X server (you could see this in /var/log/slim.log)
– It could be a problem with dBus (you may see something in /var/log/daemon.log)
– It could be trouble with Xserver (you could see this in /var/log/Xorg.0.log)
– It could be a problem with the graphics driver
– It could be a problem with elogindI am no expert, so I won’t be able to help you troubleshoot and find the true problem, at least with so little information. I have read that modifying boot parameters usually works to circumvent these problems. It has worked for me in the past, but I never had your specific problem, so anything I suggest would be shooting in the dark.
For now, something you haven’t mentioned trying, select Failsafe Boot (if not in main boot menu, in Advanced Options) when booting from live-USB. Or, if using your own Custom parameters and persistence, in your Custom Boot, add the Failsafe parameter. If slim DOES load, then we are a step closer to figuring out what is going on.
The best thing for you would be to get the real experts here, like BitJam, to recommend boot parameters for you.
By the way, we don’t all move around in the MX forum. I am sure the devs thank you for your work testing out antiX, but the MX forum has few antiX users (and the devs really are too busy), so recieving help there, (even for reporting bugs) may be difficult.
Off topic: About navigating the forum
Your MX forum seems even more complicated than here, so you probably (at least I would) only navigate the recent topics.
At the top of forum.mxlinux.org you will see the recent replies

And you can navigate to “Active Topics” to see all topics ordered by recent activity.

In antixforum.com it is the same. You should see the recent replies at the top

and also be able to see all the topics ordered by recent activity in “Topic Freshness”

As you see above, there ARE topics related to antiX 19 beta.
You could also use the Search Forums Searchbox option (see above image) and search for “antiX beta” there. Topics are ordered from most recent to “oldest”.I hope this helps you navigate antixforum.com in the future.

this is pretty odd, and I haven’t run into this one.
can you try removing the “disable=lx” boot option and see if that helps.

I tried failsafe boot in beta 1 and had the same result. I didn’t try it in b2 but will.

That’s why I posted this here today.

Thanks. I actually find the antiX forum harder to navigate as I’m used to phpBB forums (also Simple Machine Forum or SMF and a few others.) What I was looking for was a single thread dedicated to beta-testing antiX 19, or possibly two: one for beta 1 and one for beta 2. I didn’t see anything at all when I just browsed the Development category.

In the Latest Activity (at the top of the antixforum.com site), you can see one named “antiX-19-b2-full (64 and 32 bit) available”. Anyways, these are the topics you were looking for:
antiX-19-b1-full (64 and 32 bit) available
antiX-19-b2-full (64 and 32 bit) available
With dolphin_oracle’s expertise, I am sure you will be able to find a solution.

::I have a very faint memory of a problem like this on one computer in the past.
IIRC is was a problem of the user not being in the correct set of groups. The video group or the input group maybe…
Though that solution may have been a work around in itself.

OK, I’ll try to find them in the future should I need to post about the betas again. Meanwhile I may as well carry on with this thread since there’s already quite a lot of info posted here.

Should have took notes I suppose.Contents of /etc/group:
https://www76.zippyshare.com/v/kw6uuTC9/file.htmlRemember, the problem only occurs when booting from the live USB with persistence either off or enabled. It doesn’t occur booting into a frugal install or after a regular install. It doesn’t matter which boot splash I select, or even nosplash.
This forum won’t let me post any logs wrapped in code tags, probably due to post length restrictions, so I’m forced to use a file sharing site and make y’all have to download them.

::I removed disable=1x from the boot parameters but still no joy. The forum won’t let me post the requested logs, so I archived them and posted them to a file sharing site:
https://www101.zippyshare.com/v/7ggPIhLI/file.html
(Sorry I had to do it that way.)I first thought the links were broken. I had forgotten Zippyshare is blocked in my country. Could only download through a proxy.
I am no expert, and I just glanced at the files. As you say, the problem seems to be with slim “talking” with xorg. You could try to force xorg to start using the boot parameter
xorg=default
Or, force a failsafe option for xorg
xorg=safeAll this is speculation. Someone with more expertise reading the logs could find the real culprit.

ok, I’m going to say try the “nosavestate” boot code.

::I have not tested to see if this works on antiX-19.b2 but the “F4 Options” –> bootchart feature may give us some clues. If it works, run it on the broken system and the working frugal system. It creates a big image file that tells us a lot about the timing of the boot process.
My guess is it is a bug triggered by some kind of weird timing issue. Have you tried the “toram” feature? This will certainly change the timing. Another crazy idea related to timing is to use “bp=b9” to set a breakpoint right before control is passed to the “real” system from the initrd. Then run this command:
cat /live/boot-dev/antiX/linuxfs > /dev/null
This should cache all or most of that file which will almost act like “toram”.I think comparing bootcharts may be the best way for us to try to track down where the problem is.
