Yesterday, I set up a new installation of antiX 22. The installation seemed to go without a hitch. However, when I returned to use it today, I found that the trackball mouse is refusing to operate in the left handed mode I set it for yesterday.

The dialog box is still showing that it’s in left hand mode, but the mouse buttons aren’t being switched.

This isn’t a physical problem with the mouse, because when I switched to antiX 19.4, the mouse worked perfectly (left handed) there.

The following is the output of inxi -Fxz, in antiX22, the 2nd day of usage, when the mouse refused to work in left handed mode. Note that the control in the mouse dialog box was showing that left handed usage was selected.

If you scroll down in the mouse-conf on the bottom two things need to be checked.
There’s a green check mark which needs to be clicked and there’s the option to load the settings at system start.

Besides the GUI you can also look in
        control-centre > Session > User Desktop Session > open Tab mouse.conf

Look for BUTTONORDER to look like this
        #Button Order
        #0 = right hand
        #1 = left hand
        BUTTONORDER=1

        save and exit

As caprea stated; you likely need to enable the mouse configuration on startup option.
This sets the line (ds-mouse -all &) in the desktop-session startup file (~/.desktop-session/startup). Running the command ds-mouse -all in terminal would be a quick test if there is something wrong (there should then be an error output) or if it is just not enabled in startup (no error and your mouse would start working as expected).

I was able to find the green checkmark box, and the control for system startup, by maximizing the dialog box on the screen. (Maximizing brought the bottom border into view.)

I clicked the green checkmark box, and immediately the mouse switched to being left hand setup.
I clicked the system startup control, and got the message that the mouse setting would be adjusted during system startup.

            Thank you for your help!

I ran the command “ds-mouse -all” in the terminal, and there was no error message. So, I’m hopeful that upon the next boot, the mouse will be automatically set up as left handed.

(I’m going to go test it now…)

                caprea & Dave:

Thank you both for your assistance. Upon rebooting, the system set up the mouse for left handed usage automatically.

I wanted to mark this thread “solved”, but the forum wouldn’t let me edit the topic, and there wasn’t any link for me to take care of this myself – so, I’ll need assistance from an admin, to mark this thread as “solved”.

                Thanks in advance.
