I just installed PyRoom, the full screen minimalist text editor that makes the screen looks like a green monochrome monitor and it made me realize a big part of the appeal with the early days of chatting was probably because it was similarly distraction free. I also think being able to see each other type in real time is a key feature, but other than that I can really do without the emojis and just get back to a one on one, stream of consciousness typing experience instead of “features” like an obscure indicator “someone is typing a reply…” on certain social media sites.

So, is there something like that? I figure AntiX being so minimalist this may be a good place to ask. As far as the letter by letter display I know ICQ and AIM had it at one point.

There is write mesg talk as utilities but talk doesn’t work as I remembered.

It used to be the entire screen split in two halves where you wrote in one half and the other side wrote on the other.
It was as simple as % talk jack@134.22.23.24
The talk I see now is for within system communication between two ttys
