      Greetings All,

attempting to install VLC and Audacious using apt-get, downloads the files and then locks up the system completely during the install.

using synaptic for the same S/W returns a broken package error and will not install and does not freeze the system.

over several attempts to resolve the above issue, i have lost the setting for changing work spaces via mouse scroll (not sure where to find that setting), the ‘man’ pages have become farkled and attempting to reinstall them via apt-get locks up the system, and sleep does not work, nor does shutdown actually power off the system.

using apt-get or synaptic for other S/W works as expected.

two other issues: screenlight does not work and wifi is not found with connman (wifi greyed out).

Thank YOU ALL in advance for any suggestions in resolving these issues.

fresh full install of Antix19 on an MSI Alpha15 total AMD system, machine specs below:

Nice you posted your inxi -r, but I’m not sure if you mean that really.
antiX19 comes with buster, you are mixing jessie with testing , no antix-list and I don’t know what else.
        ??? It’s still running, wow !

Ah, the joys of attempting to use “PPAs”, eh?

At the videolan site, they didn’t even offer me a download.
The page just reports “go see debian, they follow the 3.0.x branch”

          .

The version from debian testing/sid, compared to the the buster (stable), does provide a few bugfixes
          https://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/v/vlc/vlc_3.0.8-3_changelog
If you’re hoping to run any version newer than that… “no soup for you” according to videolan page.

You might consider downloading the source package from debian sid and attempt to compile it on your machine

not sure what i actually did to confound the system, would there be any caveats about formatting and reinstalling the antix19 full on the root partition and leaving the home partition intact?

it would be nice to have the man pages back as well as having vlc and audacity and to find out if streamlight actually works on this system.

Thanks for all the thoughts and help!

Normally this is not a problem, and certainly worth a try, but there is a possibility that something is already fishy in your home partition.

Repos looks nice now besides deb, multimedia. Machine-specs look nice, too, btw.
This is a pretty new laptop, it’s using the vesa-driver for graphics, not optimal. You might consider updating the kernel.Hopefully also fixes your connman problem.

                  It’s not nessecary at all to enable the multimedia-repos for vlc (installable through synaptic, control-centre > system > package-manager), or Audacious(installable through package-installer from control-centre > system > package-installer) or libdvdcss2 (control-centre > driver > codecs-installer)
But if you do, please stick with buster(stable) and just install what you need and afterwards disable the deb.multimedia-repos again, like skidoo already mentioned.

If you don’t want to do without the latest testing-software, it’s better to put the whole system on testing. then you have a more stable system than mixing up all repositories.
Possibly worth a thought anyway with such new hardware.

                    Greetings Folks,

                    just and update and observations.

a complete fresh install of antix19 full, using only those repos on the disk, results in the following behaviours:

invoking any man page, works as expected…
invoking firefox, locks up the system.. reboot
invoking any man page at this point locks up the system

                    reinstall system fresh, again..
after install there are 90 packages to upgrade…. as soon as man-db is hit, the system locks up.

does not matter if upgrade is done via synaptic or apt-get.

aside from the lock up problem, the following items appear NOT to work:
sleep, hibernate, shutdown…. the system goes to the information page and locks up.

streamlight does not change screen brightness, regardless of settings
wifi is greyed out/not found in connman

i am able to apt-get install palemoon (my preffered browser)and running dpkg –audit returns no errors.

ANYTHING that has man-db associated will hang the system when it reaches man-db on install/upgrade.

YOUR thoughts, suggestions and questions are appreciated!

                      yes, man-db…
can take a long (5min+) time to complete, but I’ve never seen it fail to complete.
During the operation (rebuilding myriad copies of manpages for NN locales) it does run full-tilt.
To prevent the delay, you can (and I always do):

during first liveboot (w/ persistence) session, PRIOR to performing the initial apt update operation
                      sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
and untick all the pre-selected supported locales which will be unused on YOUR system

                      ^—> a quicker way:
                      echo “en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8” | sudo tee /etc/locale.gen
                      LANG=C sudo dpkg-reconfigure –frontend=noninteractive locales
                      LANG=C sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8

                      then
                      sudo apt update
(Even if you intend to immediately install to disk — i.e. you don’t plan to use liveboot+persistence — the performed-in-advance locales reconfiguration spares myriad unnecessary files being written to HHD|SSD during installation)

a related, optional (but I recommend) step:
sudo apt install localepurge (prevents future installation of extraneous locale-related docs)

                      a further, optional step:
                      sudo apt install bleachbit
                      sudo bleachbit
and use its “Localizations” file removal feature
(on antiX Full, you can expect it to find/remove 15k+ files, cumulatively occupying 200MB+ “size on disk”)

Among the above, each is a one-time operation except for use of bleachbit. YMMV, spot-checking later you may discover that bleachbit “detects” a few unknown-to-localepurge files which have crept onto the system during package installs (or have been placed during installation of non- deb packaged program installers). Personally, I usually just “apt purge bleachbit” after its initial use.

If I was in your shoes, the starting point would be to install a newer kernel.
If this doesn’t work on the installed system, because of lockups, you can also change the kernel on another pc on your live usb.
                        change kernel on the usb-stick

Maybe you are lucky with the 5.4 kernel

the journey continues….. now using the 5.4 kernel

skidoo: man-db absolutely fails to complete, failing somewhere between 60-80%.. i rebooted after waiting an hour. (seems to be kernel independent)

Thank YOU for your directions above… they improved both install times and boot-up times.

                          problems:

once the man-db portion of ANY install/upgrade hangs… no further changes can be made or completed even after rebooting….

                          sudo dpkg –audit
The following packages are only half configured, probably due to problems
configuring them the first time. The configuration should be retried using
dpkg –configure <package> or the configure menu option in dselect:
                          man-db on-line manual pager

doing –configure man-db…. again hangs the system solid… power-off required.
WHERE is the file that tracks the condition of installs, i am finding plenty of scripts but not a data file, perhaps that file can be edited or deleted so that other files NOT using a man-db connection could be installed…. thoughts?

the system sees, mounts and uses /dev/sr0 during install of antix, after that it will not mount even tho in devices (spacefm) it properly shows the name of the disk… as a consequence, dvd’s will not play from the MVP or spacefm.

                          invoking firefox hangs the system..
screenlight does not engage after making the day/night settings…. hit OK and the ‘which one’ box just repeats.

                          Exit Session:
shutdown, stops the system, but does NOT power down.
suspend, hangs the system showing the current window and will not wake up … power down required.

as a data point, antix15 on an older amd system worked perfect from the get-go, to bad i dumped a glass of ovalmaltine on it….

Thank YOU ALL once again for your patience and assistance!

                            5.4 kernel

For what it’s worth, I’m using a 5.4 Liquorix kernel and it works quite well.

                            inxi
CPU: Dual Core Intel Core i7-5500U (-MT MCP-)
                            speed/min/max: 2395/500/3000 MHz Kernel: 5.4.0-1.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64
                            Up: 1h 36m Mem: 916.6/7875.8 MiB (11.6%) Storage: 931.51 GiB (2.2% used)
                            Procs: 145 Shell: bash 5.0.3 inxi: 3.0

It really hasn’t mattered too much which kernels I’ve used; unless one of them had problems with specific configurations and was fixed or replaced, most of them have worked fine. Then again, the hardware I’m using, a Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop, has been very Linux friendly from the beginning, and runs great with antiX or MX Linux.

masinick: aside from me being the dullest knife in the drawer, i think the majority of the issues i am having is due to the fact that my system is so new, to whit:

                              inxi
CPU: Single Core AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (-UP-)
                              speed: 3879 MHz Kernel: 5.4.0-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 Up: 2h 02m
                              Mem: 1179.6/13931.3 MiB (8.5%) Storage: 2.73 TiB (0.2% used) Procs: 130
                              Shell: bash 5.0.3 inxi: 3.0.36

the Ryzen is actually a 4 core system, an additional 1TB card not seen, among other things s/w related.

since i am having lots of learning time with this antix19 over my old system with antix15, i will take a gander at the 5.4 Liquorix kernel.

                              Thanks for your input.

Yes, that is a likely reason for a few newer devices not to be correctly recognized and correctly configured.

That’s one reason why my hardware is older and the other reason is that I buy equipment well after it’s commodity value and therefore inexpensive.

I don’t take advantage of the latest features anyway…

                                That’s just me…

                                  You could try
                                  sudo mandb -c

Also , I’ve read on the MX-forum stevo made a bleeding edge-version of MX , somewhere is the iso for downloading.
Sure MX is not antiX, but why not giving it a try.?
