ah, that last post reminded me ~~ in MX Forum, stevo had recommended a different solution toward solving the “rebuilding manpages laaaaaagginess”. His suggestion was to install the “locales-all” package. It installs 130mb of (a full set of) manpages files. With all in place, in advance, the “rebuilding manpages” step finds noting needs to be done and finishes immediately.

… I’ve read on the MX-forum stevo made a bleeding edge-version of MX , somewhere is the iso for downloading.
Sure MX is not antiX, but why not give it a try.?

Stevo has created many interesting builds over the years to try out various ideas. Even if it is a bust, it’s probably worth checking out.

caprea: sudo mandb -c locks up the system same as during any install that calls for a man-db refresh.

in the meantime altering the /var/lib/dpkg/status file to show man-db is installed correctly is a work around to allow downloading and eventual installation of new files…. the actual problem still eludes me.

on a side note, does anyone know why the system is only seeing ONE cpu on a 4 core ryzen7 cpu?

            Thanks for your continued responses.

              Post output of inxi -G

I’m guessing the amd ryzen driver is not being used and vesa is used instead.

                  As I thought.
Apparently you need a newer kernel 5.3 or 5.4 and a new graphics set.
ie new Ryzen doesn’t work on buster.

the inxi -G was done while running the 5.4 testing kernel….4.9.2 kernel returns the same result.

when i first installed the full Buster, htop reported all 4 cpu’s….. when i reinstalled after the man-db hang ( i had not yet learned hot to get around the hang) and ever since, htop only sees one cpu.

i have managed to get most of the daily use programs operational despite the man-db problems.

NOT having the full cpu compliment is a major issue…. feels like pre-PowerPC days 🙁

Thanks everyone for the proactive responses, the journey continues.
