Apt-mark hold vs pinning

(Noobie question)

I am currently using apt-mark hold to prevent upgrades to systemd versions of installed packages that are nosystemd.

It has been very simple to use and clear.

I understand that apt pinning is recommended for what I perceive to be a similar purpose, but it does seem more complicated.

Are there situations where holding won’t work and pinning is necessary?
