        Hi BobC,

        Thanks for this. I am looking for an update notifier for my Antix i3 install, but I see one needs a workaround to make apt-notifier to work?
        Your instructions are very clear, but what I don’t understand is the $HOME path part? What is it and how do I edit it? Is it in my .bashrc file?

          My program is $HOME/bin/aptitude-notifier-check.sh

          is actually located in /home/bobc/bin

          the value of $HOME is /home/bobc

          to see if your system has that variable, try this in a terminal

          printenv | grep “HOME”

          mine returns:
          XDG_CONFIG_HOME=/home/bobc/.config
          HOME=/home/bobc
          XDG_CACHE_HOME=/home/bobc/.cache
          XDG_STATE_HOME=/home/bobc/.local/state
          XDG_DATA_HOME=/home/bobc/.local/share

            I have no output to `printenv | grep “HOME”’
            That is weird

              ok, just run printenv in a terminal and look for your user id…

              What version of antiX are you running? It must be pretty modified if it has no $HOME variable defined. You could define it yourself, but I think the point is that if that variable is missing, its likely that others are missing, too.

                The forum software is to blame. write the command in the terminal withut copying it from the forum and it will show. The quote symbols are replaced in the forum software for more stylistic quote marks, which are a different symbol interpreted by the terminal.

                  Good catch Xecure, you were right, if I type the command I get a sane and normal output

                    If someone can’t run apt-notifier for some reason, they might be able to use yad-updater which is in the antix-goodies package. I have script that I used to run it via cron automatically every 6 hours.
