      Before trying antiX-core 21, I just need to ask if kernel 4.4 is available from the repository for this antiX version.

        You can easily find out (when running antiX 21, live USB or virtual installation) e.g. by running the following command in terminal:
        apt-cache policy linux-image-4.4*
        and examining the output or searching for the package(s) in your GUI installer of preference (e.g. synaptic etc.).
