To get audio working, I must follow these steps:
      – right click the speaker icon in the task tray
      – choose Open Mixer
      – in the mixer, press F6 (select sound card)
      – Choose ‘0 HDA Intel’
      – Arrow over to the first (of three) Headphon sliders
      – Turn it up all the way
      – exit mixer
Now the audio plays through the laptop speaker (it is mono downmixed since there is only one speaker), and the task tray volume control works as expected. However, following a reboot, I must repeat the process to get the audio working again. BTW, the mixer indicates Card: HDA Intel and Chip: Realtek ALC269VB.

To be fair, AntiX is not the only distro with which my machine exhibits audio issues. Ubuntu derivatives require turning up the mixer sliders but they don’t require me to ‘select sound card’.

I had a similar problem a few days ago. Have you checked the initial volume setting in the configuration file desktop-session.conf? After setting it to 90% I had audible sound at startup.

The easiest way to find the file is in Control Center, Session tab, User Desktop Session button.

You can also locate it in the hidden folder ~/.desktop-session/

Also maybe worth a try, if you not already tried that
create a file named snd-hda-intel.conf in your /etc/modprobe.d
To this file /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf add the following line

                  options snd-hda-intel model=generic

You have to reboot to look if it changes anything.

                  Besides,
if you run in terminal after booting
                  alsactl init
do you still have to make all the changes manually in alsa-mixer ?

/etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf did not exist. I created it and put the options line in it. No joy.

‘alsactl init’ actually does make the sound work. But it initializes the volume at about 30% (and with the EeePC’s wimpy speaker that’s not much), so I modified the desktop-session.conf STARTUP_SOUND_LEVEL=”90%”. It still starts with volume at 30%, but I can at least turn it up from there. That’s just a minor issue.

Where would be a good startup script in which to place ‘alsactl init’ (if this is the right way)?

You could try to put it in the .desktop-session startup,
                      alsactl init &

Likely my version of desktop-session is different… however depending on the version there may be a second option to actually enable the sound level modification that would need to be set before the STARTUP_SOUND_LEVEL option would work.

I put the command at the beginning of said script (and rebooted). No sound. So I put it at the very end of the script. Still no sound.

Pity, but it works if you run it in terminal?
Maybe a sleep addition helps like
sh -c “sleep 15s; alsactl init”
which delays the command by 15 seconds
Maybe it’s possible to make a keyboard shortcut or a script.

I’ve just seen the sleep command above cant be copied and pasted because the apostrophes are modified badly.(forum software)

I got the audio to automatically start! In .desktop-session/startup, somewhere after #!/bin/bash, insert:

                              /./usr/sbin/alsactl init

The trick was that the full path was needed otherwise an unseen no-such-file error would occur.

This is now solved, at least partially. It still starts the volume at 30%, not STARTUP_SOUND_LEVEL=”90%” as specified in .desktop-session/desktop-session.conf. In the startup file, it does not matter whether volumeicon is started before or after /./usr/sbin/alsactl init.
